Annual winch greasing

  • Re-greasing your winches every year is something a lot of people don't get around to doing. It can be a chore to do especially if you're somewhere with bad weather in the off season.
It is well worth doing however as it will make your expensive winch last must longer and work much better (having a pawl stick close can allow the winch to slip and be dangerous)
We have Lewmar winches, but the procedure is very similar with other winches. There are other videos out there, but when I looked the only good ones I found were people dismantling new winches. Well I think you need to see a used winch stripped down to really see what you're up against which is why I made this video.

I too thought about giving this one a pass and am glad that I didn't. It's amazing where you can find tidbits of wisdom that can be useful. 👍👍
"1 down, 9 to go" !!! 😂 Sometimes it would be nice to get paid by the hour. 😉

One of the best boating videos I've found. Very clear and thorough.

Great video. I really think this helped a lot of people see the inside of a winch. One thing I would like to point out. It's better to grease each part as you assemble it rather than grease all the parts and lay them down in your work area before assembling. This will help prevent contamination. This is especially important if you're doing deck winches. Some might respond saying "I keep my work area clean." I've heard it all before yet have seen the results. Also make sure your hands are clean after the disassembly. No point in handling clean parts with dirty hands or gloves.

I admit that I was going to pass on this video, having serviced a few in my time, but we have one new Lewmar winch among the Harkens so I gave it a look. So pleased that I did because I learned a few valuable lessons. Thanks for doing this video and sharing it. Glad we only have 4 winches!

Great timing of your video - we bought a small sailboat this fall and I was wondering how to service my winches. Thanks for sharing!

Missed this first time round, but a simple and very valuable reference video that will give a novice the confidence to do this essential job. Ours are Anderson electric which are a fair bit different, but nothing that two minutes with the manual will not sort. There's a couple of "O" rings that needs looking after in addition to the planet wheels etc, and the electric motors (and house batteries!) get tortured by insensitive and unsympathetic operators! One of the mainsail luff eyes was also ripped of once, something you would not do with a manual winch...

Well that's one way to get the views up! No seriously, I will try to slow down on instructional videos I know it's hard if English isn't your first language.
