I’ve been working at Lewmar for 6 years now & it’s great to see our product out there being used & serviced years after I made it, I take a lot of pride in making this product & love seeing it used out there…
Be nice to know why the star shape socket is used, vs 1/2" square so any standard socket wrench can be used? Can't imagine it's done on purpo$e to prevent us doing that 🤔
New owner of a boat with 10 Lewmar Ocean Series winches like this appears to be. You did a great job asking questions when the Lewmar guy didn't mention something - such as the camber on the bearing washer found on the larger versions of the winch. For a newbie like me, this was important. The space for a small flat head screwdriver tip under the lip of the gear pins was news as well. I've watched several versions on Lewmar service videos, including one from Lewmar themselves, and yours is the best - thank you!
Hi Peter, thanks for that! So, they are very much the same, only there is a spindle comes off a gear package that goes to the motor below. I will however try and sort that out for you next time we are with them - should be before next season. 🤞
Chris - mate you Fu**** beauty - this came up on my feed -and as I love your work watched it - guess what I am doing right now - servicing my Lewmar winches - and I am covered in grease trying to put the gear packages back in - and you guys teach me - put it all back together - then grease the gears - what a revelation - thanks mate - hope the van is going well - the HR of Vans - also LOVE that ali boat of yours.. Cheers.Tell Jeni her camera work is tops.
Hey Dirk!! Thanks man, what a legend.‘stoked your still finding value from us! Yeah, mate, I will tell Jenni! Her efforts often go unnoticed which is typical but a shame! Thanks again fella! Glad your winches are ready for another season! 👍🤙
@@SailHub Chris mate - yup -we are on our way up to Scotland - ya got us hooked on coming to see it - so if ya wnat a break from the van/boat we got space for you guys..
@DirkJacobsz mate!!! I would love a break! But we’ve got to get this van done! Where are you headed? If your passing Perth, we’re on the van today, drop by for a cuppa 👍 P.s thanks mate! Super kind of you to offer too, hopefully next time!!
Hi! And thanks! Personally I don’t really think it matters as to when it gets done so long as it does get done! That’s presuming the winches are covered when not in use though. If not, then yeah, service them before you start the season. 👍⛵️💨
Talking about things potentially going in the drink, that can happen with handles, which for some reason they use that star shape socket, vs 1/2" square so a socket wrench can be used. Can't imagine it's done on purpo$e so we can't 🤔
I want to see a video on how you get the pawls to engage on one of the small winches which have the ratchet as an integral part of the drum. Seems to be impossible, as the pawls are not accessible when you start to put the drum back on.
You could use those, but I would have to say use the Lewmar product. You could also use white spirit. Just got to be careful on any plastics like the bearing carriers etc. It’s a super simple set up - hence why they are so robust. In that it’s very unlikely you will get much benefit out of an ultrasonic cleaner. Just a wipe down to get it clean is often enough. 👍
Hi! Not yet… hope to get one in the pipeline soon, it’s much the same though, I would suggest looking at an exploded diagram Als going for it! They are also very simple 🤞
The workings of electric winches follow the same basic principle, with an extra drive gear at the base. Lewmar Electric? - If so follow the same instructions in the video above.

Dave the team at Lewmar are lovely. Real genuine and all super switched on. Keep up the good work! 👍
@@SailHub it’s a great reliable product, you have the ocean & evo winch there, the guy on the right I know from work but cannot think of his name 🙄

@@Lana_Warwick sadly that I can’t tell you, I just make them, you would have to speak to our design team…
@@sdsferrodee Be Sad if after "6 YEARS" of your short life in a factory tediously making them you've never thought, Hmm? Hey Harry, why ya reckon...?

nice video, it would be great if you (or anyone) would produce a video on how to service and dismantle an electric winch (like an Ocean 54)

lol just got a snapdragon in Portsmouth in England and was wondering how to service the winches , subbed
Superb! Thanks for joining👍 enjoy the snapdragon!!
Well done...good video 😊
Good fun this one, these guys are great. Maybe we will sort a Harken one out for you guys 😉
Gonna start a business servicing winches for lazy yachties in my local marinas - charge heaps and make a mint LOL -thanks for teaching me
Legend! Remember who your friends are👍😉
@@SailHub So true, just being cheeky, but thanks again for this and all your other great vids 🙂
@mostlysailingnz great stuff, hey thanks for the positive vibes 🤙⛵️
really like the video! the guy mentioned to do it when winterizing - wouldn‘t you do it rather in spring before the new sailing-season starts?

I completely agree! The star shape is just two squares so you can use a square, it’s not half inch though! Cleve$r these sailing brands.

Hi! Turn the winch clockwise as you gently press the drum down is usually the answer. Let me know how you get on 👍
What is the best fluid to use for degreasing the winch? Gasoline? How about using an ultrasonic cleaner?
