Aside, wasn't going to say anything, but some of the comments here are just way off base when it comes to Goku. I say this as a manga reader. To call Goku a bad parent is one thing, I can get where it comes from though I think he's decent enough, but to call him the worst parent you could possibly have is not supported by any of the franchise material and certainly not by the manga. Believe me, there are far, far worse parents out there. My father left us and while I don't hate him and I do believe he loves me, I don't have the kind of respect and admiration for him that Gohan repeatedly shows for Goku, and that he still has for Goku after his seven year absence. Gohan was excited to hear that Goku was coming back for a day, and runs up and hugs him when he shows up. I can tell you I would not have the same reaction to seeing my father again. It would be a very awkward meeting, because we no longer have a relationship or connection whatsoever aside from sharing DNA. Goku's not a responsible parent and he's far from perfect, but indications are that he has an actual relationship with Gohan. There is plenty of manga evidence for this.
They were play fighting not trying to kill each other, so each turning super sayian is perfectly understandable, and SSJ Goku and SSJ Vegeta are pretty close matched so it wouldn't be too far fetched for Vegeta to win a friendly spar match with Goku
