If you have something like Davinci resolve, you can do this by automating the sound field. which is just a 2d plane. But you can do the same technique in a free program like audacity. It just requires a little knowledge in how sound design works. The only parameters that determine sound depth is volume and panning. Panning to the left moves all the sound to the left of of the sound field. Increasing the volume moves that sound either closer to you and turning the volume down, makes the sound appear further away in the distance. Manipulating both of these parameters through time, you can make it sound like it's exploring the sound field. You can take advantage of other techniques like the Haas effect, which is taking an audio source, duplicating it and then phase shifting it by like 7-15 ms, and then panning one of the sources to the left, the other to the right. This gives that audio source a stereo field, and then you can do the same trick as above to make it have even more depth. Lastly, Reverb adds depth using the same technique as Haas, which just echos the same sound source back as a very small time frame like a phase shift. Reverbs are nice because it alters the texture of the echo'd source...so you can make it sound like your in a broom closet or a large church.
