Im currently in rome, on holiday in italy for two weeks. I remember hearing horror stories from my mother who had heard these stories 30+ years earlier, of women throwing babies at you to steal your wallet, of men dressing as tourists in order to blend in, and children and old women begging on the streets. All of these stories are exaggerated in my experience here. My mum had an attempted pickpocket experience, but in over a week being here it has not been as dangerous The stories of baby throwing women are 100% racist against the roma community, and the rest are exaggerated to incite fear of the other. Hi Harry! I am not italian, but have family members who are and in relation to south Italy, it is completely different from the USAmerican idea of south and north. It is not a political thing, its more of an ethnicity thing, which sounds insane, but it's cause of how it formed. South and North Italy have many cultural and historical differences, including different dialects and ethnic backgrounds. So there is a huge historic precedent as to why a fascist would discriminate against what would technically be... Other Italians. Hope this helped, if I got anything wrong pls let me know!

I initially bought the Monica Poli story. Her videos are very compelling, where she calls out the alleged pickpocketers, and they immediately disperse. I guess I assumed she knew them on sight from encountering them previously. But. If, as is recounted in _this_ video, she *doesnt* actually know them, if she identifies them as pickpockets purely because she has a "sixth sense"-- all she is doing is focusing on their Romani appearance. And they are possibly 'fleeing' because... she is a crazy person demonizing a Romani in a non-Romani crowd. Mightn't anyone be scared for their safety in such a situation?
Italian here. I was as surprised as anyone when this soundbite went viral. Personally I wasn't a fan even before her "political alignment" was made public (honestly it was easy to guess). Racism is a real issue in Italy especially now with all the clandestine immigration from Africa, which is directly tied to Lega Nord's success in recent years. I just wanted to point out they didn't try to "overthrow" the government and they are actually part of the right-winged coalition leading the country right now (which is a terrible, terrible thing). This said, pickpockets are a real issue (I live in Milan one of the biggest cities in Italy) and unfortunately they tend to belong to certain ethnicities more often than not. It's not a racial issue, but a societial one. Anyway, please don't let this keep you from visiting Italy 😊 I can guarantee we're not all fascists or pickpockets here 😂
