The same student who endured stress to clear jee can also work hard and endure stree to build successful career in engineering as well but that's were they fail because of lack of skills, hence they make a rapid shift to IB and this happens oly in India. Other countries are flexible and most of the investment bankers have degree from commerce background.

The most plausible reason I think global IB's hire engineers over CA and other degree is because Indian engineers are the most malleable creatures. Think it this way, an average Indian engineer under goes 4 years of engineering, would have landed a boring mass recruitment job in IT/ ITES, Civil, mechanical domian and worked slogging his ass off for 2-3 years to eventually dislike his job and its prospects. He then decides to bell the friggin CAT, learn finance from scratch, gets professional certification course whilst maintaining an above average CGPA and if all of this was not enough he was learning the actual skills that mattered in an IB role. (Programming language- Python/R, visualization- power BI/ TABLEAU and quant). Now if this dosen't make the poor chap get a decently paying IB job, then I don't know wtf an Indian engineer would do?

Thank you so much, can you please build on what you'd like to know? Because afaik, there's no discrimination on campus either by professors or by recruiters, so everything is same.
one doesn't need any specified degree to be Investment Banker, you can simply take a 6month certification and become a Analyst, obviously if you have a CFA degree it's good but the time and amount it takes to become a CFA is more as compared to any certification. What is advisable is that go for a certification and take up a job gather relevant experience and decide the field you actually want to take e.g. front/middle/back office then eventually go for the global IBs you can get a certification from Imarticus, Data Trained, wall Street etc.. Data is preferred bcz they are also providing a LGCA certification w/c is acceptable in 170 countries.
Guess it’s important to reflect on skills and focus areas: risk management (esp market and credit), financial instruments accompanied by very high level of stress appetite (unfortunately). Trading in commodity market is also a good entry point for IB. But in my own view understanding of risk and risk based decisioning is key to a successful career in IB.
I have seen People learn financial modelling and build models and post them on LinkedIn. I think in most IB roles constitute building Financial Models on a Daily basis, so doing this may prove that you are ready for the job right?

To all, I know it is said that it is almost impossible to get into front office roles unless you get into top 5 b-schools but it is not always true. I belong from one of the top 30 b-school, can say tier 2 b-school, still managed to land a front office role. Many foreign Investment Banks have their IB competitions where folks across different b-schools take part. I was national finalist in one of the competition by a top European IB. This brought me PPI and I managed to convert that. P.s. I am neither a Btech nor a CFA. Sometimes all that is needed is a bit of luck and good industry and valuations knowledge.

Hi Shweta, I have 3+ years of work experience in IT role and i am a bcom (hons) graduate from DU. During this time period i had tried but could not get into any finance related role. Now i am preparing for MBA and my aim is to get into investment banking but i do not have CA/CFA degree and in order to compensate for that, i am planning to do a couple of finance related certification courses. In my 10th and 12th my scores were more than 90% and in graduation it was 65%. So will it eventually make any difference in my selection in IB?
Yes I think as you got a Hit in marks in grad that might have been the reason you were not able to get a finance role even after being from DU. And In India probably the best would be to not prepare for CAT and get a relevant work ex or Try for CFA.

It's rare for any non-engineer other than BSc or Bcom to land an IB role. The competition is intense. The only two things that you can do are doing CFA and getting work-ex. Getting work-ex will also help to understand if that's what you really want to do.

Although science grads might be preferred (I am guessing for their mathematics exposure), can I not bolster my chances for the shortlists through doing quality and rigorous equity research?! (Or independent project/work ex related to any other instrument where one's interests lie?). I still feel that with finance related experience, conceptual clarity about fin analysis and good academic performance in quant disciplines in the MBA or getting an institute rank might allow students from non-science stream to perhaps compete decisively, if not land a role in IB?

I have 3+ years of work experience in IT role and i am a bcom (hons) graduate from DU. During this time period i had tried but could not get into any finance related role.
Now i am preparing for MBA and my aim is to get into investment banking but i do not have CA/CFA degree and in order to compensate for that, i am planning to do a couple of finance related certification courses. In my 10th and 12th my scores were more than 90% and in graduation it was 65%.
So will it eventually make any difference in my selection in IB?
Yes I think as you got a Hit in marks in grad that might have been the reason you were not able to get a finance role even after being from DU. And In India probably the best would be to not prepare for CAT and get a relevant work ex or Try for CFA.

It's rare for any non-engineer other than BSc or Bcom to land an IB role. The competition is intense. The only two things that you can do are doing CFA and getting work-ex. Getting work-ex will also help to understand if that's what you really want to do.

I completed my 12th as I will do bcom and BFm then in 3 years I will go for CFA and do a job along with CFA level 2 till that I will 24 something after that I will go for CAT
Although science grads might be preferred (I am guessing for their mathematics exposure), can I not bolster my chances for the shortlists through doing quality and rigorous equity research?! (Or independent project/work ex related to any other instrument where one's interests lie?). I still feel that with finance related experience, conceptual clarity about fin analysis and good academic performance in quant disciplines in the MBA or getting an institute rank might allow students from non-science stream to perhaps compete decisively, if not land a role in IB?
