Their catalogue is so great and diverse. You can find Southern punk in "Murmur", folk/southern rock/country in "Fables of the Reconstruction, alternative rock in "Document", folk rock in "Automatic for the People", grunge/glam rock in "Monster"
I also recommend their last great album, "New Adventures in Hi-Fi"
Your breakdown of each album is great. I own each of them, for decades, and you summed up the stylist bend of each one. I jotted this down, just because it resonated with me. (I won't claim credit! LOL!)
Their first 6 or 7 albums are all noteworthy and have so many great tracks to explore. They are treasure troves of 80s rock. You haven't heard anything yet until you explore those albums.
My 'favorite' REM album rotates between the first five and Automatic, each one is so great in its own way. I still get chills from those albums 40+ years on. The Chronic Town EP is also a fine work.
"...if you go to a R.E.M. concert..." sadly, they disbanded a few years ago. I was lucky to see them on their last European Tour. Will treasure that memory forever. Even high fived with Michael during "The one I love". Good times.
The whole “Automatic For The People” album is fantastic, a real departure at the time for the band.
Despite this song being on the Out of Time album.
That crazy makeup on Stipe's face is a gesture for their lovingly departed (but still alive) drummer, Bill Berry. Berry had a magnificent unibrow, so that’s why Michael Stipe is wearing one. Berry suffered a Brain aneurysm in Switzerland on tour and no longer felt like being in the band. P.S. When recording this song, Stipe barely knew what he was going to say and just riffed off the lyrics in the recording booth for the first time at 2am in New Orleans and blew off Peter Buck’s head (the lead guitarist’s).
It’s always great to witness someone discovering R.E.M. for the first time. Keep going. You’ll never be disappointed.
Agreed!
i was lucky to see them live ...i'm older and it was HEAVENLY...this is a GREAT song to review, btw. One of my favorites.
Same but I got super lucky in ATL and Kate showed up for Happy people and Me in Honey.
My favourite reaction guy, reacting to my favourite song from my favourite band. I wasn't disappointed. Powerful track
One of my most favorite songs ever
Love this band. Have many favorites but R.E.M is one of the top 10
“Find The River” is one of R.E.M.’s best song. 👍
My favourite song pure perfection
Also Sweetness Follows
Country Feedback is one of the most emotive songs ever written. Period. Pure lyrical poetry.
This song is in my top 5 REM songs. Country Feedback, Sweetness Follows, Fall on Me, I Could Turn You Inside Out, Find the River
from the home town of r.e.m. as a teen , it was exciting seeing them around town as i was a huge fan. growing up , it was cool to see them always being regular folks despite their fame living in a small town.
They were the biggest band on earth for a while with Out of Time, but they stayed totally humble.
I've heard a lot of live versions of this song and haven't heard it played the same way twice and it works every time.
Saw REM in a small club in the mid 1980’s, seen them in a huge stadium in the 1990’s. Seen them 3-4 times and they never disappoint
They were my first band that I ever saw, in the mid 1980s. Saw them a bunch through the mid 90s. Never did disappoint!
@@Vermonster23 they were such a great live band
It's crazy how big they got. I first saw them in '83 in a room not much bigger than my garage. By the end of the 90s they were the biggest band in the world. Sill love their first EP, Chronic Town. Check out Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars) for an early gem
Best REM song ever IMO. It's so unique.
Simon & Garfunkel was my first favorite group/duo. Then, it was Commodores. Then Eurythmics. And then it was R.E.M. They were my favorite band for a very long time (until after "Monster" was released.) So... I'm just going to list some great early-ish R.E.M. tracks.
Might as well start with "Radio Free Europe" Then maybe "Gardening At Night" "Wolves, Lower" "Talk About The Passion" "Perfect Circle" "Harborcoat" "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" "Driver 8" "Maps And Legends" "Can't Get There From Here" "Fall On Me" "These Days" "Superman" "Swan, Swan, H" "The One I Love" "Welcome To The Occupation" "Pop Song 89" "Get Up" "You Are The Everything" "Orange Crush" "Turn You Inside-Out" "Low" "Half A World Away" "Sweetness Follows" "Drive" "Try Not To Breathe" "Nightswimming" "Strange Currencies" and "Bang And Blame." That's almost certainly Way Too Many songs, and they've got some great ones from the later part of their career, but this list I've provided hits a lot of the highlights from their first nine or ten records. Enjoy!!
one of my all time favorite songs every written. I was a HUGE REM fan back in the day. Such great artists
By far my favorite REM song ❤ got hooked on it years ago
I love this track. The studio version is haunting. They have so many excellent tracks to explore.
REM the BEST band of the 1990’s!
Nightswimming is fantastic
This song is Michael Stipes personal favorite REM track.
I worship REM. Find The River is my favourite song by them. I have some of the lyrics tattooed on my arm in honour of my late Dad. Belong, The One I Love, Fall On Me, and Leave are all insanely great, too. Though I love everything they did, so…
Love all those tunes. Just thinking of the intro to Leave gave me chills. Ever heard Wendell Gee?
@@wordup897 I love Wendell Gee! And the intro to Leave? When the guitars kick in, I swear to the Music Gods, it gives me chills every time. Every time!
For more great REM check out "The Finest Work Song", "Talk About The Passion", "Don't Go Back To Rockville" or "I Remember California"
Grew up with REM always a fav of mine Love this Moody song
I remember when Monster came out. That's their first album I bought. I listened to that one a lot! One of my favs is Strange Currencies. Also really like Let Me In and You from that album.
You is fantastic!
I love Strange currencies
I have a very big soft spot in my heart for REM. Started listening to them in the 80s. I think it’s time on your journey you started getting into Tom Waits. He is a one of kind of talent. His career spans many decades and he never does the same thing twice. A true pioneer in American music. I suggest maybe starting in the middle with “gun street girl” or maybe even “going out west”. Or even earlier, “I hope that I don’t fall in love with you”. But he’s a deep dive and there’s no shortage of material. I hope you give it a try. ✌🏻
Polo really needs to hear the recorded version with the pedal steel. The pedal steel is so integral to this song.
Great track, and I'm happy to see you enjoy this one.as much as you did. As Michael said in the video, it's his personal favorite song the band ever did. The album version is gorgeous, as is the Unplugged version, which features a lovely little coda where Michael does a spoken word bit of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone".
There's also an unofficial sequel of sorts called "E-Bow the Letter" which I honestly like even better, but it's got a similar vibe and you might hear a few echoes of this song in there. Hopefully you'll be able to give that a listen too at some point!
They were a great Band touring colleges and relating to young adults. Fortunately they also appealed to most of the rest of us. In a strange way this reminds me of “Bridge of Sighs” by Robin Trower. I know I’m aging myself but it is a little dark, slow your heartbeat kind of song too.
"Daysleeper" is a favorite of mine
R.E.M. makes Awesome Music!!
Some say that REM’s first several albums were their best, but IMO their later stuff was just as good. They were at their peak of musicianship before they disbanded. From politics to love songs to angry rants, Michael Stipe knew how to hit you with poignant lyrics, and they’re still relevant today. From the Accelerator album, listen to ‘Until the Day is Done”
Love to see you appreciating this band good stuff
I saw them play a few times, amazing performers who really could connect with the audience regardless of the size.
This version was great.
You NEED to check out "SIT DOWN" By James!! Same time/era! THESE WERE MASSIVE, BUT "James" Were even bigger ar the time! 👌😎🏴🇬🇧
I think my favorite REM song is Ages of You; it’s got Peter Buck’s wonderfully jangly guitar in it and just has an upbeat sound. I also like their Turn You Inside Out which has a psychedelic vibe to it.
And Nightswimming is a good chill, nostalgia song.
This is their best song and even they say it’s their favorite tune.
I can’t think of any other song that has no five words together that make any logical sense but you know in your heart exactly what he is talking about.
I agree with everything you said. Most of Michael’s lyrics are a beautiful bunch of nonsense, but you feel everything, you know exactly what he’s trying to convey.
Their best , and my favorite song.
Remember owning this album another great track was "Me and Honey" that I don't believe was a single "Low" has a similar feel to this song as well.
Definitely a favorite of mine! Huge with most REM fans. The Apologist is also amazing
When I first got this album. It was one of my first CDs, and it had this “repeat one song” feature. So I played this track for like a week, straight.
I love how, he NEVER rhymes at any point. He even at one point intentionally uses bad grammar just so he doesn’t accidentally rhyme. I’m normally a hardcore grammar Nazis, but in this case it’s perfect.

1980's were a weird time for me. Got so lost in the music I loved in the 70's and found little that interested me in the 80's. Time to check some of this out now. Never too late.
There's so much great music from the 80s. It's the decade of true alternative, post punk, new wave, metal, and so much more. Here's a playlist that's all over the place, you might find something you dig ruclips.net/p/PLeQP4XnFAJOB6PWywb_1RqQepexC_Jvkl
90’s too (this is from the 90’s) but to be fair their best stuff was in the 80’s. Check out Murmur their best and first album. And check out Perfect Circle from that album - one of their best.
Driver 8 will always be my favorite REM song.
You should really look in to this band. They have poetry and talent They remind me of the Smiths.
My fav is sort of sentimental. Sweetness Follows. From Automatic For The People.
this is my fave REM songs and I have a shelf of albums, if you want their passion try sometihng like Cuyahoga
Listen to: Driver 8, So. Central Rain, The One I Love, or any song from Eponymous! The early stuff is the real reason REM became HUGE!
So glad to see you digging into their catalog! They have a treasure trove of album tracks and live stuff that nobody covers on YT. I recommend Finest Worksong for a big rock sound, Half a World Away for a soulful acoustic vibe (mandolin featured), Radio Song for a groovy rock song, Dont Go Back To Rockville for a more southern/country vibe.
I hadn't heard this live version before. Michael Stipe didn't hold back here. The studio version is fire too.🔥
Love you, man! Thanks a lot for what you do. The studio version was done in ONE take
Live version with extended Nils Lofgren solo is awesome
REMs made about 8 great albums worth a listen start to finish.
R.E.M. is a big part of my teenage years😊❤
Hello from Waiheke Island, Auckland New Zealand
such a great track.
Also check out Don’t Go Back To Rockville. Their best album is 1985’s Life’s Rich Pageant, especially Fall On Me.
A beautiful REM (sad) ballad is (live) "R.E.M.-I´ll take the rain, lyrics" on the youtube Lyricsongs channel. "If this is what you're offering, I'll take the rain". I won't disclose the best lyric, so you can be surprised by it.
Sad Professor is my favorite r.e.m. song. It’s so nice and melancholic.
R.E.M. is my favorite band! Polo, you should listen to Country Feedback featuring Neil Young playing with R.E.M. it is awesome!
Definitely more his style too
"can't get there from here" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have always liked what I have heard from REM, but I know very little of them.
They’ve somehow become the most overlooked yet influential band of the 80s/90s college, alt-rock scene.
Could’ve sworn I commented on this one, very obscure lyrics, a favorite of mine. Like many bands, I have every Album and REM is one of my favorite bands. Here is a list of songs to choose from. Electrolite, Parakeet, South Central Rain, The Lifting, Leave, Find the River, NightSwimming, Man on the Moon (Soundtrack song for movie of the same name/Andy Kaufman, Fall on Me, Perfect Circle, and oh so obscure, a Syd Barrett cover of Dark Globe (A truly crazy, lyrically cry for help by Barrett to his former Pink Floyd band mates). There is a great snippet of Roger Waters talking about going to see REM, and they played “Dark Globe” at the end, just Michael Stipe, and Mikey Mills coming back out. Roger thought Stipe was just having “a go” at Waters because he was there. 😀
One thing I love about R.E.M.'s music is how certain songs may begin to resonate more with age and experiences. I grew up hearing a number of their big radio hits because of my parents, and then as RUclips and music streaming sites took off I began to look into the back catalogue of their early indie days. The higher energy, socially minded aspects of that material clicked fast with me. Now that I am 30, some of the more subdued material on Out of Time and AFTP resonate more with the passing of loved ones and the loss of relationships I wish went another direction.
REM’s best song, and that’s saying a lot.
Lived in Athens Georgia where REM and the B52s before they were famous. Some of the band stills there. I found your page on the song Comfortable Numb. If I may comment about that video, I didn't think Comments would show on a year old video. So When "The Pink Floyd" was started there was no David Gilmore, the lead singer was Sid Barrett. But Sid Barrett had taken so much LSD, it literally fried his brain. There are several songs on the situation that Barretts is going through. Comfortable Numb, wish you were here, and shine on you crazy Diamond.
Please, Polo: The Great Beyond. And thank you!
I can’t believe I am 60 and I never heard that before awesome tune deep deep deep.
I read that these lyrics were made up as he sang them.
All the quirkiness and beautiful self-loathing of Morrissey but with a good human behind it! I tried in my head a few ways to describe Stipe’s lyrical range and I really can’t. He can do deep, shallow, funny, dead serious, the aforementioned self loathing and insecure, loving, disdainful, and then half the time it’s not even clear what he’s saying or meaning and he just surfs on the vibe which is powerful enough. My wife can’t listen to this band because of a bad relationship but she loves this one and can’t resist it.
I first saw these guys in Athens at the 40watt. They've remained a go to listen 40+ yrs later. ❤You should do Night Swimming❤
Peter Buck is such an underrated guitarist.
REM is one of the greatest bands, ever, including as measured by their commercial success, but they may also be the most underrated band ever.
You need to hear the version with the steel guitar to get the full effect
"Lullaby Of Broadway - Excerpt - Busby Berkley ".....❤.
This band....they had a lot of popular songs but if listen to the albums they have a lot more. If someone back in 70's told me that in the 80's a band with this sound would be a fav of mine I would have said that they need to do less acid. REM is a band that one might not like at first but if you dive into the albums one would get what they are all about. Rock on Polo !!!
REM is my favorite band. They are up there at number 1 with Pink Floyd. Not one bad song from Michael Stipe
Awesome tune. Great version.
This with Neil Young is amazing
Really like the version from 94 bridge school benefit
A) repeat what somebody already said: check out the live version with Neil Young
B) check out Try Not to Breathe. great track
You need to check out Saturday Night by misfits
Wonderful choice to react to this fantastic song. Had the pleasure of being at several of REMS amazing shows including this one in Wiesbaden Germany and every time they played it they would mix it up in tempo or guitar solo or Stipes vocal delivery pure class.
Check the following version out in link below from the Later with Jools Holland in 1998 would have loved to have been in that room to see that whole promo gig for their great album UP.
