Women loved him and men wanted to be him. This was perfectly acceptable back in the 70’s. Every woman wanted to be kissed by Elvis. I saw him in concert 3 times. Between the ages of 9-12. Even as a child, I always wanted one of those kisses. There will never be another one like Elvis.

Good comment. Things of course changed after John Lennon was murdered in 1980 but you are still right. No one evoked reactions like this. Oh there were the Beatles but that was still different. Elvis Presley was truly beloved because the fans recognized his humility, knew the circumstances from which he arose and that he actually loved his fans and knew that they made him.

When he came out in the 50's the girls ripped the clothes off of him, pulled their hair out and got so excited they actually urinated on themselves as witnessed by the photographers. They screamed so loud that what he was singing was irrelevant in the 50's. The objective of all the women during his performances was to get up front and kissed. He was a star for the people and part of why he was so loved. As a woman I would have trampled anyone to get near him. Vicki

@@quizzyondemand At the very beginning of Elvis's career ('54-'55), he recorded very few songs and was worried that, because of all the screaming, his audience wouldn't hear him and know that he could actually sing. He was very humble and never understood why people went so crazy for him. While filming the '68 Special, one of the guys on stage took a piece of lint from his face and handed it to a woman in the audience. As the screams erupted, Elvis said "it never ceases to amaze me". His ex-wife said he sang "The Wonder of You" for his fans to express his feelings for them. You can find a video of this Live in 1970. And "Fever" from Aloha in Hawaii in 1973 shows how, even many years into his career, he was still amused by the way the ladies would scream every time he made the slightest little movement. I'd love to see you react to these two songs!

In case you don't know about Elvis back up singers (The Sweet Inspirations) Cissy Houston (born Emily Drinkard on September 30, 1933) is a gospel and soul singer. She led a successful career as a backup singer for such artists as Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, and Aretha Franklin, and is now primarily a solo artist. She is the mother of singer and actress Whitney Houston.
In 1963 she and three other singers formed a backup group that became known as the Sweet Inspirations and performed around the country with various headliners. Despite their touring success, Houston longed for the comforts of home. 'I don't know if the road was really for me', she says. 'My surroundings have to be a certain status or else I'm miserable. Some of those hotel rooms get on my nerves'.
Elvis Presley invited the quartet to sing backup during his now-legendary series of Las Vegas concerts. After those shows, Houston says, 'we would jam with him for an hour, singing gospel. He really loved it, had a feel for it and was tickled to have four 'church sisters' backing him up'. As a token of his gratitude, Presley (whom Houston's husband affectionately called Elvis Pretzel) presented Houston with a bracelet engraved on the outside with her real name and on the inside with his pet name for her: Squirrelly. That same year, Houston and her singing partners scored their own Top 20 hit with the tune 'Sweet Inspiration' and watched their reputation soar. Cissy, in particular, 'was a terrific singer', says Ahmet Ertegun, cofounder of Atlantic Records.
'She has wonderful pitch and was always performing at her top level'. If he had kissed me, I would not have washed my lips for decades afterwards … just kidding, but every woman, young & older, wanted to be kissed by Elvis, & often their husbands or boyfriends would send them up front to be kissed by him. The 70s was the time of physical freedom, Make Love Not War, & those kisses were totally innocent & perfectly acceptable back then. Elvis always wanted to make his fans happy & he always responded to that. I am sure those women would have scrubbed themselves within an inch of their lives, before going to an Elvis performance. I lived in New Zealand, so never saw Elvis perform live, but I would loved to have seen him on stage.

Hey Quiz! I enjoy your reactions. I am your fan. However, I need to get this OFF MY CHEST for people of MY GENERATION.
I grew up during the era of the '68 Summer of Love, Woodstock, & the time of Love & Peace. I lived in SF; hippies, Height Ashbury, & Berkeley riots. This is what it was like in the late '60s & early '70's. People (not me, unfortunately) were having SEX in PUBLIC, some having just met the SAME DAY!
The movie, Elvis-That's the Way It Is, premiered in the movie theaters in 1970 during our era of "free love". Your review of Elvis' Love Me Tender 1970 live concert in Las Vegas was taken from Elvis-That's the Way It Is movie theater film. I 13 yrs old, sitting in the theater watching the movie & Elvis went into this specific Love Me Tender, now iconic, scene.
At 13 yrs old, I was AMAZED watching the King kissing all the women in the movie. This iconic scene had people in the theater clapping & gasping! Exactly the reaction, Col. Tom Parker & Elvis wanted from the movie audience. THIS WAS A MOVIE STUNT TO SELL THEATER TICKETS & show the audience Elvis was STILL THE KING in 1970.
So I hope you & other reactors to this Love Me Tender scene quit with lecturing MY GENERATION about GETTING STD's! For the guys in my generation, getting a STD or a sore on your lip was a BADGE OF HONOR!
So no we were NOT STUPID. It was just LIVING OUR LIVES. Elvis & all us guys were just LIVING OUR LIVES TO THE FULLEST.
However, I agree with you, today is a new generation. Try to respect & appreciate our generation. We respect & TOLERATE some of the STUPID stuff going on TODAY. I just ask you & other reactors STOP lecturing my generation about STD. Keep up your great reactions! Elvis & I are proud of your work, Quiz!

@@quizzyondemand Quiz! Your reply helped me see where you are coming from. Hell, I don't CONDONE getting STD either! As fathers of boys (you got a handsome son there, man), neither of us want ANYONE to catch a STD; especially our children.
All I am TRYING to say is my youth is a totally different generation than future generations. Maybe you can say we were a very promiscuous generation. All I am saying is, what Elvis did in the Love Me Tender video in 1970 is TAME compared to what other people in our generation was doing at the SAME TIME! I appreciate your response, Quiz. I can tell you are not just a great father, but you are a caring gentleman. Respects, my man.
