Just imagine: Visma with WvA, Laporte in good shape, Van Baarle, the huge twins, the Norwegians, and Tratnik. Yes, the sickness and the crashes depleted their team a lot. I don't think it would have changed the winner, but boy, do I have to stop myself from dreaming of what Roubaix could have been.

That pretty much sounds like the situation we've seen over and over again. WvA relying on the strongest team in a one day race.
Just imagine: WvA didn't join the strong Jumbo now VLAB yet he joined a continental team like MvdP did. And MvdP went the other way.
I believe MvdP likely would've had more monuments to his name then he already has now. Doubtful of WvA would've had even had Milan-San Remo.

@@Legionarivss Or he would have won less of them, because his teammates would make profit of the fact that they have Mathieu back in the peloton.... Just like we did always see at Quickstep in the past, where it was often guys like Knaven, Chavanel, Terpstra would could profit of the fact that they did have the strongest rider in the race. (Museeuw, Boonen)
The strongest guy in the strongest team is not always a guarantee that the captain will win more. ... Other teams will not always go in full chase mode to get back the nr.2 or nr.3 from a certain team, while they have the nr.1 of that specific team sitting back in their wheels.

@@Legionarivss Winning is very often a function of having a strong team, even for MVDP. A big reason why he got and created such a big gap in Roubaix was because of the work of Vermeersch and Philipsen behind him. Even MVDP would be less successful if not for his super strong teammates. Also, to respond to OP. Wout can follow MVDP, no question. He very well would NOT have been dropped by MVDP at Roubaix at 60km to go and could have followed and won the sprint. If Wout and even just one other strong Visma rider was there and healthy it could have changed the outcome. MVDP was dominant this year, but it was undoubtably because of who WASN'T there as well.

@@amandaadams2010A lot of sayings in English make perfect sense if you’re a sailor. Many nautical terms are completely foreign to the non-sailor. Eg; Three sheets to the wind- referring to someone who’s had a bit too much grog - on a headsail, sheets are lines (ropes) that control the shape of the sail. There are only 2 and they typically control the sail on the side away from the wind. So 3 sheets to the wind is really messed up.

Entirely agree. It's funny that in the section about relegations they bemoan the fact that there are no clear rules, and I've heard them before talking about how the outcome of a move shouldn't affect the punishment. And here they're arguing the exact opposite. Ah, well, your little plan to cause a rider to fall on jagged cobbles at 50km per hour didn't work out, so you're free to go. Weird double standard.

How many time have I said, “I wish I had seen Merckx at his peak.” Well now I’m seeing MVdP at the peak of his power. No complaints. And another point, 5-6 years ago we all bemoaned Sky dominance, 3 years ago it was the Wolfpack, not months ago the target of criticism was Pogs and his invincibility. Greatness comes and goes. Enjoy it when you see someone or some team master the sport. (Maybe I’m just used to this, being a cyclo-cross fan. The same arguments were being made in winters past.)

The main difference at SD with last year was that Kopecky was less punchy, and maybe that Reusser had all kinds of issues. Vollering had similar level to last year and Wiebes was stronger. Lidl Trek were also not easily the strongest team at Flanders, Vollering was stronger than Van Android and Wiebes was also there, Longo Borghini was better than Kopecky and that made the difference. The big difference in this race and other races was that a rejuvenated Vos was there as an ally.
Balsamo was sprinting well, so definitely improved on last year, but she was not climbing well and to me she looks worse in that respect than two years ago. She got her victories because she always got help or got lcuky, except Brugge de Panne where she was clearly the strongest, but that is flat and Wiebes was not there. Her other big win was Alfredo Binda but clearly Trek are the only big team who take that race seriously. Even in PR she was not necessarily stronger than Wiebes, but she got lucky that things got back together when she was dropped and then Georgi was so kind as to tow her to the front group at the end.

If individual riders want to do commercials outside of the race, nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned, but it gets a bit annoying if we end up with a bunch of top riders riding around with all sorts of personal advertising on their helmets or whatever. It's difficult enough for casual viewers to keep track of teams with all the champions jerseys. Let's not end up with a peloton speckled with random Mountain Dew and Walmart and BP oil and Bing and Meta and McDonald's logo's popping up all over the place on top of the team sponsoring.
