Space Afghanistan? That sounds like a movie I wanna see.
Mesopotamian, or more broadly a couple countries to either side of Iraq. The mention of Kalhu in the opening letter is a dead giveaway as it is the Biblical name of the Assyrian city of Nimrud, which was at one point the capital of that empire. The hyphenated, multi-part names as well are an Akkadian naming convention. Ie. Nabu-Damiq, Kudur-Enlil, Dayyan-Ashur, Ishme-Dagan, etc.
Other familiar references-
Khiva : Khiva (ancient Persian city now located in Uzbekistan)
Navarin : Yerevan (Armenian city)
Tarkhan : Tarkhan (term for nobility with east Iranian or Turkic etymology)
Elaim : Elam (present day southwestern Iran)
Daud : David (Arabic transliteration)
Romani : Roman (once occupied the area of the levant)
Dune is basically Space Afghanistant, but with space oil on top of it.
Ah, someone beat me to mentioning dune
@@alexandreboureau6175 Except it became a center of a new empire. Like Fremen became a space SS and Leto had to make female clone army to tone down on repression.
Also Arab revolt since the rebel leader if Fazil, like Faisal of Arab Revolt fame.
The land is called Herat, which is a city in Afghanistan (founded by Alexander the great).
It's appropriate that the reincarnated MicroProse is publishing this one, since the brand was built on unique hardcore simulations. A significant portion of my income during the '80s and '90s went into their coffers, and many of the best games of that era had the bright red MicroProse label on the box. Hopefully they can repeat history; their lineup of upcoming games certainly looks promising to an old simhead like me.
I miss master of magic. Still best 4x ever made.
Oh hell yeah!
Ditto on that. Birth of the Federation cemented my status as Trekkie. I loved that game.
This title looks incredible
@@cruvensilverwing7948 I feel you. I wish they would make a new one. I think Stardock owns the rights now.
@@nedwed100 Actually Slitherine is remaking Master of Magic faithfully now. I know this post is two weeks old, but maybe you didn't know about it.
Futuristic Russia fighting empire in space Afghanistan. I love Spllaty's approximation for explanation of weird story settings to us, common folk 😀
Yeah that was a great one, already a fan of the contents and it hasn't been 3 minutes ^^
This game makes me want to re-read the original Dune series.
Maybe space Arab revolt, like Fazil in Arab garn seems paper thin version of Faisal (Saudi or Iraq version).
Now I understand why the Russians have such high taxes. They contain such wars in reality.
Early years of the Imperium of man. That's pretty much how Tallaran Desert Raiders regiment was born.
I get strong Dune vibes from this one...
Yeah, it feels like the 1992 Dune game by Cryo - the one where you had to travel around the planet, negotiate with the Fremen and slowly build an army to take on the Harkonnens.

@@throawwai I loved that game.
@@megakedar This comment should be pinned.
9:20 His second in command is wearing a still-suit nose thing. Its very intentional.
"It was definitely a miss-ile, not a hit-tle" :P Never thought of that one. hehe
There was a documentary about the largest air battle in modern history and one of the moments in the documentary was a pilot explaining how a missile missed him and he said, "It isn't like the movies where you always see them hit. They're called MISS-iles; not HIT-iles." lol
yeah, clever, I'mma use that one from now on.
The style is amazing
I've been waiting for this one for 2 years. Kinda reminds me of the good old 90's gaming.
Hopefully it will be released in 1-2 months.
Hard to pass up on this game, so unique and great
I have a soft spot for alternate history settings with familiar but clearly divergent technologies/cultures. Especially ones that use the "digital painting" artstyle. It's one of the reasons why I loved Disco Elysium and Homeworld so much.
Dishonored too
Homeworld? Absolutely! Specifically the Deserts of Kharak title lol.
Disco Elysium AND Homeworld? Are you the brother I never had? :D
i come from the future after sseth makes a video on this game because this seems like something up his alley
i was right
Looks like they took inspiration from the old South African army. That's a Buffel APC in some of load screens.
yes
This is made by the same guys who made Hammerfight, if Im not mistaken. I f--king LOVED Hammerfight. I so wish there was a direct sequel. Ill be getting this though.
Why do you want a direct sequel?
@@SadenIsWatchin because I loved the gameplay and wanted more of the same, with a wider variety of ships, weapons, and modifications. Also, I feel that world could be explored a lot more than it was narratively and in terms of gameplay.
Apparently this is a sort of prequel. I saw Melka in a video and that was the city in Hammerfight where you fight in the arena. I think this is the time before Hammerfight and all of the machines and monsters in the Abyss were from this civilization, shit went down and everything regressed into the weird steampunk setting.
I definitely remember hearing that Highfleet was a Hammerfight prequel.
@@RexRondo honestly speaking I don't like that explanation, they went from rocket powered steel ships, cannons and missiles to wooden helicopters that fight with giant melee weapons?
The style! the sound design! everything here overflows and oozes with creativity and style. I'm getting both Homeworld vibes and Dune vibes. And that is a happy mix
This is giving me a 40k Vostroyan Firstborn vibes. I like this!
Vostroyan Aeronautica Imperialis Forces assisting the PDF of a World colonized by Tallarns.
For the emperor
Successor to Hammerfight. Been waiting for this forever. Thanks for covering.
So have i. That victory sound after the battle was so nostalgic aye.
Likewise. Have been waiting for this forever.
Oh no shit? Hammerfight is possibly my favorite PC game of all time. JS. Still play that shit today.
BWAA AHAHA AHA (does your guy in hammerfight laugh like a maniac when you spin him around too much? or some other reason? I never could figure it out - but really liked playing that game)
@@dgeo9958 To taunt someone in Hammerfight you just need to wiggle your mouse left and right a bit. Spinning it around sometimes sets it off too hence the laugh
I love 2D art games like this, not only for the nostalgic factor but theres something when it involves your imagination to fill in the details of the game's universe, people and places.
I WANT THIS GAME NOW.
RUclips: This is Carrier Command from 1988
had me dyin
Is this dieselpunk? Whatever it is, that's the *most diegetic UI* I've ever seen; bravo to the designer(s), it looks great! Also very satisfying gun sounds.
Nice to see another entrant in the rare desert setting (Dune and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak come to mind). I could see an expansion into a jungle setting too: Americans in Vietnam instead of Soviets in Afghanistan.
It is, indeed, Diesel-Punk aesthetic.
Fun fact, the ELINT display with its directional lights and signal strength gauge is directly taken from old soviet-era radar detection setups.
Thanks Splat for highlighting this game. From looking it up on Steam, I now know MicroProse is coming back with this and a few other new games! Gamers of my age will know MicroProse as making several games that defined early PC gamer childhoods like the original X-COM. Can't wait for Carrier Command 2 to come out, played that way back on an Amiga!
Strong deserts of kharak vibes from the atmosphere.
Gaalsien carrier inbound!
I loved that game, i dont know why it wasnt well received and didnt become very popular. Had so much fun in that game
Microprose coming back to greatness?! Games like this tells me "yes"!
The gameplay and story telling are working so well together, the immersion is really strong.
Your point about immersion at the beginning makes perfect sense. Fallout 4 is a fantastic example of where I can put up with the bugs because I'm immersed in the game. I'll definitely be getting this.
Yeah my type of Syfy apocalypse game 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
And definitely gonna be checking out more of this
Day one buy for me. Sound effects and presentation are top notch. The fact that it has depth as a game and is not just a mindless shooter is the cherry on top.
This game looks super cool. Love the UI and graphics and general immersion. DEFINITELY picking this one up
The lighting effects on the clouds during battle are fantastic.
i think the game really good, nice and cool effect (lightning, fire effect...) with interesting combat,
russian guys have good taste and style xD
Okay WOW!!! I'm sold on this one....
The atmosphere is just W O W
This looks great, ty for featuring it Splat.
that game needs awards ASAP , art! 100% art.
I don't know why I keep coming back to this channel. It's like I'm addicted.
its a great Saturday morning when Splatt uploads
Wow this game looks really good, the details, the effects, the sounds, it's so satisfying. Really looking forward to playing it.
good morning my friend! we love & appreciate your channel so much! we'll have a fantastic weekend watching many videos and gameplay! 🥂
HUZZA! ANOTHER HIGHFLEET VIDEO! This game has few people (legit splatter and raptor) who have access to the game’s early access.
That empire fighting in space Afghanistan description is 100% accurate to the style of this game!
This is not a game I could manage but would LOVE to watch a halfway decent lets play of it!
Glad to see you check this out! They made one of my favorite games so I have high hopes for this one.
those effects are absolutely gorgeous, what the hell man. i dont usually play "sci fi" stuff but dude, that looks good!
I have been waiting for this game to release for over a year, and then splat goes and gets an early key. Awsome!
I forgot how much I liked these videos
Having flashbacks of playing Lunar Lander back in the 70/80's during that first landing sequence!
Crikey, it's beautiful. World building looks intriguing and the gameplay looks solid. Looking forward to it.
The combat reminsd me a bit of the Star Control series:
- You got a fleet, but can only use one ship at a time
- the way you get new ships and ship classes via relations seems similar
- fuel and money as a metagame
Main differences are:
- you fight multiple enemies at once
- the damage model is a lot more detailed
- there is ship designing like in "Airship - Conquer the Sky"
Been waiting for 3-4 years for this game. Can’t wait!
I've been waiting for this one. Hammerfight was a lot of fun, but maybe lacked a little polish. But it was still incredibly stylish and had very satisfying gameplay, outshining most other indie games even today. This has been years in the works, and looks to be much more polished by comparison. You can tell it's all these little flourishes that can make a simple idea very satisfying. One thing that strikes me here is that the art for this game is simply amazing, both in style and execution. I've seen more of it on the developer's Twitter account, and this is the sort of stuff you'd expect to see in Franco-Belgian comics.
Frankly, this will be an instabuy for me.
I can always count on you Splat. Great lad!
I appreciate your reviews! I was unaware of this game until til popped on my feed and I bought it a few minutes later! Keep up the good work.
Damn those lighting effect are AWESOME.
That explosion cloud being lighted up by tracers bullets really jiggle my giblets.
Omg, this is hammerfight 2??? Yeah, it's from Konstantin Koshutin, finally! The first one was a blast!
I absolutely love hammerfight, sadly the steam version isnt updated so you always get a game ending glitch at the end of the 3rd-ish mission
This seems so reminiscent of Dune. From the setting to the main character being a Duke etc. I love this. Cant wait to play it.
I think Deus Nobis is Boston’s motto lol
Once again you have absolutely nailed my gaming taste on the head
the art and presentation is FKING AMAZING
I want this game so bad, i went to the link to find out i already had it on my wishlist, had it on follow, and it wasnt coming out until quarter 2 of this year, I really really like everything about this game.
That remind me of Cryo's Dune where you talk to the Freemen leaders to reinforce your workforce and your armys
Pretty sure the same guy who made Hammerfight, very similar game but more steampunk, is making this one. So excited!
oh thankyou youtube for recommanding this to me
Holy shit I know who this is! The creator of this game also made Hammerfight. Small game with insanely fun combat system. Basically oriental steampunk helicopters with massive hammers attached to them that you control by swinging your mouse left and right or in circles.
Wauw... The atmos is strong in this one.
The gritty realism must flow.
Have to be honest, seeing Microprose name on the store page was a big factor in me buying this!
"Hello guys and gals, welcome back to the nerd cas...." (clicks LIKE). Can't help it, Splat could make a tax audit look fun as hell and a root canal sound like a weekend in the Bahamas.
This looks really good..! Welcome back Microprose!!
The game looks amazing!
Never thought I'd hear something described as 'retro' and 'futuristic' in the same sentence.
Fallout series are pretty much that.
Bro en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrofuturism
Steam and diesel punk?
Yeah, like for its time Alien movie was decently futuristic but still had the grungy, blocky industrial function-over-form style, and it was so iconic that moving forward it permanently stuck and comfortably fits into the genre.
the UI/UX was beautifully designed.
This dieselpunk visual style is astounding!
I absolutely CANNOT wait for this game to release. Q2 2021, come a bit faster!
this legitimately looks amazing
The user interface is brilliant
Space Afghanistan solved the issue of the air you breathe being too hot by removing all the air, atmosphere and chances of surviving... and somehow making Cyrene after Exterminatus look like a Pleasure Planet. 🤣
So it’s a Lunar Lander variant, interesting. Haven’t played one of those since the Amiga days. Here’s hoping there will be race levels as well, that was always fun.
If you haven't played this devs previous game you absolutely owe it to yourself. It's a very interesting game with a interesting and under explored setting
While I don't think the game is for me I love the fact it caters to both hardcore players and casual players with the UI and all. It's awesome to have the option play as you want :).
Man, I'm digging everything about this game 👍
Yeh i will get this game for sure. Combat looks great!
It's like a saharaui sword or takouba. I played a little their "sword dance" as kid. I lived among them for a time.
Goddam the art style is amazing.
Oh these are the developers of Hammerfight! God I loved that game
Btw, early dev's game called hammerfight, you can look for that too
This is a MicroProse game... dunno how indie they are nowadays, but they used to be a big name :D
Graphics are pretty cool and original.
Wow love the art style in this game
This looks awesome, why haven't i seen this before.
That was my first thought after tripping over this channel.
the sound of your voice is what makes your stream so good
This game was made by the same dude that made Hammerfight! Looks amazing!
This is really cool. Definitely in my wishlist
Watched this on raptor, really really good game
Man I have been waiting for this for a while
This is the same dev that made Hammerfight, amazing physics based fighting games. It's like this game but with flying machines carrying giant swords and hammers.
This game intrigues me mightily. The main clickable area reminds me a little bit of the interface for silent service and the submarine simulation genre. The ship-to-ship combat reminds me a lot of Star Control/Origins
Великолепный визуальный стиль!
Beautiful visual style!
Wow this looks impressive, looking forward to release 😎
2 for 2 so far. Why can't I ever find these damn games? Subbed for now and will remain if you keep this up. I am definitely buying this game at release.
3:20 aged very well
Man, this really scratches some specific itches. On my wishlist. Also, Microprose is back? :P
The HYPE is real!!!
Want to buy and play it NOW :D
Konstantin's sequel to the ,nowadays free to play, Hammerfight, ahhh how long its been... @SplatterCatGaming Enjoyed the video keep it going.
3:27- Well, Alexander kinda died young (Greeks also forged their kingdoms there), British managed to hold it via client king at least, Persians--Achaeminid and Sassanid--toppled and non of it involved Afghanistan, and even Afghanistan (Or Pakistan due to using Durrani as moden founders) forged their own empire.
This looks cool
this game looks like allot of fun
