I served as crew in 1960 thru 1961...back then their were no women on board, no safety harness, no racing USCG strip on the hull. We still had German brass labels on all pertinent areas and a few mahogany bulkheads in the officers quarters. Engines were still the original U-boat twin engine diesels. Currently Caterpillar engines. Wish we did have the safety harness back then as we lost an Annapolis Cadet on board for the short cruise as he fell from the first "tree" on the main mast. Had to take him into Boston harbor. Only regret I have from my experience on the Eagle...along with regret that I did not accept the offer to join the Academy upon the end of my service.
Excellent pride of service from all the cadets...I really enjoyed participating in the furling of sail, perhaps looking back now I was not supposed to participate.
We had some Germans board the ship at one of our ports as guests...they were very informative as to the experiences they had when they were serving in the German Navy in WWII. Telling me as cadets they did much of the same training as did our USCG cadets.
But (perhaps with "tung-in-cheek") telling of the severe disciplinary witness as they were "Hull Keeled" in certain situations.
Also advised me that the ship had one anti-aircraft gun posted on the stern...when she was used as a "freighter" during the end of WWII. When stationed in the Baltic Sea. At that time all the mahogany was stripped away except in the officers quarters.Originally commissioned as "Horst Wessel"1936...where our EAGLE is on the prow...a Nazi Eagle (Parteiadler)

Wonderful series. My uncle, Robert Davis, is now 92. He was class of 1946. Now in a retirement home, when I show him these videos he is enthralled. He remembers this time like yesterday. And, he always says about the USCG, "I would do it all over again."

The Eagle was my home as part of the 15 permanent crew members back in the early seventies without females at that time.I rebuild the MAN main propulsion sub engine that was setup with Fairbanks Morse crankshaft clearances that pounded the babitt right out of it.All engine settings i would get by phone call from a retired ex MAN employee from Germany. That engine was running nice and quiet again with lots of oil pressure. Now with a Caterpillar and all engine controls up above.Elmer as the old MAN was named ended up in the academies museum.

I spent the summer of 76 down the engine room running that same engine as an EOW. It was a nightmare answering bells especially when the cadets were practicing docking.

This same summer, the San Diego Maritime Museum sponsored the first Festival of Sail. Eagle was a participant along with tall ships from a number of countries. During the festival, Eagle sailed in company with the museum's flagship, the 1863 Barque Star of india. I was a volunteer crewman on the Star during the festival and I still have photographs from that sailing. Between the time this video was made and the festival, Eagle's Commanding Officer changed and i have photographs of Captain Papp's successor, Captain Luke, hauling a halyard on board the Star of India.

As a Silver only obtaining AUXOP, I'd love to get to CREW level to serve with these amazing leaders. It's a longshot by far, but I'd rather be three sheets to the wind than be without the opportunity to serve aboard the Eagle.

The German Navy has build a ship according to the Eagles' construction plans and still uses it to train navy cadets. Both are wonderful ships.

What a shame the UK doesn't have a tall ship of this size.

In April 1945 the British arrived, seized the Horst Wessel and hoisted the union jack. Holtkamp, meanwhile, was handed over to the Americans. ;-) www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33543706
