After watching this, I ordered a TSU-N18 decoder to replace the factory decoder in one of my Rapido 44 tonners, and a scale sounds system's speaker. Looking forward to the results!
@@Frob25 yay! We are glad you found this helpful. We would love to see your results if you want to share a video with us!
@@SoundtraxxDCC I will!
Wow, even with the stock speaker that’s immensely better! The only time I ever use that other competitor is when there’s a prime mover sound that I need that Soundtraxx doesn’t have, which thus far has only happened twice. I definitely prefer Soundtraxx whenever I’m able to, especially Blunami. Speaking of, Blunami N18 when?
@@mafarnz thanks for the support. Sometimes you can use our audio tools to make a prime mover that we do have work for another model. Blunami in n scale is a little ways down the road. The current Bluettoth chip is too big for that small of a decoder.
The SoundTraxx sounds are SO MUCH better!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was interested in having this locomotive and decided to go with the Bachmann one because it already comes with a Soundtraxx decoder. For those that prefer Rapido , they do offer a silent model that can be fitted with the TSU-N18. Based on your recomendation I used the TSU-N18 in a 45 tonner and it works great. Thank you also for your tips on adjusting the sound . BTW as you sugested, the speeaker has to go.
@moisesbursztein2830 hi, since you've gone in for Bachman's & compared it to Rapido, which one do you feel is a better model? 👏🏻
If possible both on DC and DCC basis
For 🇦🇷 Argentine ports they had imported several GE 44ton units back in the early 60s which were spread around at different ports.
And would be an option to model.
cheers = saludos
🇦🇷🧉👀🤗😁🤙🏻
There are two Scale Sound Systems speaker replacements available for this model
@@CentralJerseyRailfan
I'm wondering how good that'll sound with the cab speaker and the tsunami.. I just ordered my tsunami a little bit ago..
@@DamonGaskin The cab speaker with a 13x18 driver sacrifices the cab interior but you get much deeper sound than the drop in 11x15 driver. Both are still an improvement over the stock 11x15
Glad it was helpful!
I’m probably going to do this. I feel ripped off paying as much as I did for this model for it to come with the worst sounding LokSound decoder I’ve ever heard. Thanks for the video guys.
We are here if you need any help. You can always sell the factory decoder online to get some of your money back. You will be happy with a SoundTraxx decoder and we are here to help you!
Glad I'm not the only one with the same feeling. I was also very disappointed with the sound on the 44 tonner
I just got my 44 Tonner,
and I put a TSU-N18 decoder. The overall sound quality was low. So, I look at the speaker and housing and found that the speaker was loose in the housing. I remove the speaker and find that it was just held in by two small gluer spots in the corners. I removed the glue and spread a small bead of silicone sealant inside the grove in the housing and reinstalled speaker. Sounds a lot better. I ordered a replacement speaker from Scale Sounds System.
That is unfortunate. As we mentioned in this video, we do recommend a speaker upgrade.
Norman I have a GE 44 toner engine I converted from DC to DCC but back then I could only use a DZ123 I am planning to change it to the TSU-18
If you need any advice on this conversion, just reach out to our Support Team: (970)259-0690 or support@soundtraxx.com.
Soundtraxx folks..... can you do a tech bulletin that shows the steps in PDF format including programming the lights and keep alive?

very nice
Thanks
This seems to definitely be a model that almost requires a scale sound systems speaker. My Walthers Mainline NW2 is another example, I used the TSU-N18 and a sountraxx sugar cube speaker, barely heard it when lowered and distorted at higher volume. Folks, I am not sponsored but if you can use those speakers with Tsunami2 decoders. The best sound quality I’ve ever had from my favorite decoders.
Scale sound does have great speakers.
I found the information on how to operate the lights on the Rapido 44 tonner very useful, because I had an Athearn SD70ACU to which I installed a Soundtrsxx 21 pin Econami with which the ditch lights did not work. Using a TCS station, I changed the indicated CVs and it turned on the left front ditch light and the number boards. I checked the internal connections and they were fine and it occurred to me to press F5 and the left ditch light came on. When I turned the system back on, the ditch lights did not work, but when I removed the process with function 24 they worked again. Every time I run that locomotive I have to repeat the operation. In neither case did the rear ditch lights work. My question is, is there a way to avoid the repetition? Can the rear ditch lights be made to work?

FYI, your website doesn't have this engine listed yet in the decoder selector section, that I could find.
Hi Guys, I love your products. Im currently trying to find a sound decoder to suit a RDC. I think it is a 6 cylinder Detroit motor sound? Im not real sure on that. Any chance you can point me to the correct decoder that you may have?
Many thanks

Great!

Does the stay alive still work after the new decoder installation?
Picked up my 44 tonner, picked up a TSU-18N decoder.
My fault, but could you switch to bigger print on the type of TSU-18N in the package.
I got the electric instead of the GE.
Oh no, we will keep this in mind. Your retailer will probably let you exchange it.
I'm going to try and solder a capacitor to the tsu-n18.. I have a ton of switches that aren't powered, abd I really, really want to run this decoder in the 44 tonner! Or will a currentkeeper 2 somehow fit in the body? I'm thinking not, but figured I'd ask..
This model did have a stay alive in it. Contact our Support Team for more install tips: (970)259-0690 or support@soundtraxx.com
@@SoundtraxxDCC yes, I contacted support, and I have to try and install the TSU-N18 once again, try to let it sit for a few minutes to see how it does..
@@SoundtraxxDCC Ok so I contacted support, and then had a conversation with Ed from NCE.. Suffice it to say that it's awesome with the board(tsu-n18) in it! I just can't remember the CV's for the DDE now, and it's driving me crazy.. I think it's 513-to change the sensitivity correct? And then, I wanted to change the rear light so it's always on(dim though, or a rotating beacon... So many Cv's now! Lol
Have you guys figured how to get the factory installed to keep alives to work with the TSU-N18?
Aren't the capacitors on the main motherboard, and not the decoder? It looked like the 2 capacitors(the look blue, and there's 2 of them next to one another) are on there, below the hood louve(my models can be lifted, so I can see, what I think are them)..
@@DamonGaskin They are on the motherboard yes
@@CentralJerseyRailfan Ok, that's what I thought. From my "limited" experience with their current keepers(soundtraxx capacitor solutions), it's tied into the power delivery system. So I'm thinking(and I can be wrong) that it's going to work regardless of the decoder, unless the decoder specifically disables it(how, I wouldn't know)...
@@DamonGaskin ESU decoders can work with 2 wire stay alives like the TCS Keep Alive and Soundtraxx Current Keeper but might not always play nice when programming
@@CentralJerseyRailfanhmmm, true. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, unless soundtraxx advises otherwise. I'm kind of going out on faith, and past interactions with soundtraxx. I wouldn't think they'd advise the decoder, and give the little info they did on the lighting, and not mention any anomalies with something as fundamental(and important), with the power system. That's just my experience(s) with then and their technical support.
Now I wish I've got the DCC ready version instead of the sound version 😔, never was a fan of the ESU's.
You can still switch it out and sell the old decoder online.
@@SoundtraxxDCC thanks, I was thinking about that after watching this video. Thanks for sharing this information, it was very helpful 👍🏾
I only heard a single prime mover. Was there 2?
@@c6corvetteZ51 Yes, our dual cummins sound does have both prime movers. Which is what we used in this video. Remember that we do recommend a speaker upgrade here and you are listening through a device that may only have one sound channel.
I noticed this locomotive has a Keep Alive built into it does it work with the Soundtraxx decoder?
Good question. But I was thinking that it looked like the keep alive(mo power) was on the actual motherboard. I'm thinking it should.. Hopefully.. They didn't really speak on it, which they probably can't.. Not sure..
It should, it was somewhat inconsistent on our model but it would work most of the time. I do not know how it functions internally so I do not know how long it needs to charge for instance which may be the reason behind the inconsistency we saw. @@SoundtraxxDCC excellent! I can't wait till I'm able to install it, and see it first hand..
@@SoundtraxxDCC didn't work on mine. I'm so disappointed, as the sound is so vastly superior to stock, that it's not even funny!
@@DamonGaskin I installed a SSS V2 (cab replacement) speaker in my 44 tonner then tweaked the sound settings -- much better. I might be willing to try the TSU decoder but not if the cost is losing the MoPower capacitor.
No thanks, ESU sounds better, can be easily programmed through the programmer and is years ahead of Tsunami 2's technology. I am surprised SoundTraxx is still in business quite frankly. The only domino left to fall is Athearn.
Easily programmed? If you have a Lokprogramer, and about an hour for the decoder to write.
We love this hobby, and we are just happy that you enjoy it as well. We do disagree with your comments, but that is ok. We are here to try and make the hobby more fun for our customers and we work very hard to do that. Happy modeling!
All I can say is that almost every time I try to program an ESU using my LokProgrammer, something goes wrong with it and I end up wasting a lot of time trying to fix it. Setting CV8=8 usually doesn't work to reset it, for example. I am converting everything to TSU's that are easy to do, such as the new Rapido 44-tonners. But if the capacitors on the motherboard aren't going to work, that is a terrible shame...
