Tony is smart. It *_is_* basically a Beetle. Except many Beetle models are far superior. Might as well buy a Trabant. Who wants to listen to that rattly, crude, grating, gutless little 4-pot engine anyway?
Man, this has me so excited! A 356 would be sick! And I'm glad the experience you find and tell us about is what I have always felt and seen and read about when it comes to Porsche's, as someone who never get to see them up close or experience them but love Porsche, good to know I'm not just making it up in my head! :D Even in the simulators you can tell they are different to other cars! :D

Wonderful car. Great video. Maybe it's because I'm twenty years older than Sam but I don't see the fascination with most modern supercars. I just love the simplicity of earlier cars. 90's and back suits me best. No need to go crazy fast to have loads of fun.
No apologies needed for the in-cabin noise. The sound of an air-cooled engine is always a treat. Hope you do end up with some sort of 356! It's definitely my #1 dream car.
Yes, classics. Looking forward to the search :) Tip for classic cars at start up: don’t do that throttle on/off thing in a carbureted car.. just give it some throttle/rev’s and hold the rpm for a while. Happy hunting! A 356 would look great next to the GT3 😅
Sam @seenthroughglass, I say with cap in hand, we've got 7 Porsches in the stable, many of them vile kit, but I tell you, if I could only keep one, the 356 Rallye (with a Wilhoit big bore motor build) is the one that never leaves! They are fantastic in the twisties, well balanced when on power thru tight apex, and have looks that make grown men weep and lasses swoon!! I say abandon all hope and bloody well get one, come vacation here in the Americas with it (Georgia to be exacting), and join me and my lass as we put on another invite only, Porsche only event (with accompanying film crew) in the Appalachians in Spring of 2024!!
For starting, when you pump the gas on the 356 it is filling up a small leather cup with fuel and each pump of the pedal pushes that fuel into the engine. Holding the pedal to the floor will no longer prime the engine with the 'accelerator pump' and will instead primarily put air into the engine to dry it back out, until enough it starts, at which time the engine makes its own vacuum to pull air and fuel in. If it's flooded and not starting, put it to the floor to stop flooding and evaporate or burn fuel.
In 1970 when I was 20 yrs old I had a 356 B and commuted 30,000mls in a year wearing out a set of Pirelli Cinturatos !!!! How lucky was I then ? Watching you drive exactly the same car brought all the memories flooding back 😍😍
Back in the day when these were new I was into Alfa Romeos, my first car was a 1964 101 series Sprint Normale. I never so much as got into a Porsche. We used to joke that the reason the back windows on those were so big was so that the drivers could see where they were going as they oversteered off the road.
Sam just such a Porsche 356 B but black and red interior, dad's old work colleague had. He bought it new in 1963 and drove it daily even in the winter up here in Kiruna Sweden, he worked at LKAB which is a mining company and he bought the car after inheriting money. The last time I saw it was in the early 1980s and it was out of storage the whole time, it never rusted partly because here in Kiruna we don't use road salt and he cared for the car like his own child.
Top notch video, thank you Sam, great fun! Alternatively you could suprise us all, get your motorbike license and join Harry and his son for Sandraiders 2024! Might need some delicate persuasion with the home front, quite possibly, but still, I would sign up for that. Thanks again, this Portugese sportscar specialist showroom and likewise workshop is just excellent. A very cool, STG revisit and road report 👌😊
Dear Sam, IMO, you should think about one with a few mods, like a disc brake conversion - although the C had them standard from factory - even one with an uprated engine. A bit less money, more usable, and dare I say enjoyable, and the same vibe. If you really get bitten by the 356 bug, you could even consider dropping in a 2L flat 6 from an early 911, making sure the mod is reversible and keeping the 'original' engine in storage. The great thing about the 356 is also that it's fairly roomy and you fit.
If you keep on hammering the throttle, you flood the carburettors which means the car won’t start. Holding the throttle pedal down is the only way to clear them and allow the correct fuel/air ratio to mix in the carburettors. You learnt that very quickly when all cars were carbureted pre fuel injection days. Lovely old Super 90 which will only continue to appreciate in value. 😊
For a vintage car I would recommend an Alfa 105. Then turn it into a restoration project to adapt it to a GTA spec. Best way to enjoy a car and lock in the renovation value added.
Awesome Sam. Glad you got the porsche bug. I know you have had the bug for a while. But aren't the 356s just gorgeous. Kind regards Bob Rose Northampton UK 🇬🇧
I have been in Sportclass with my son after watching Sam´s first video with them, and ended up staying almost 1.5hr with Andre and his staff explaining to us details and history of almost every car they had there. Lovely and passionate people...
Sport Classe Lisbon what a place. I'm Portuguese and I'm so found of this place it's history and heritage. BTW André took you to the right shore of the Tagus river, South. Setúbal peninsula is one of the Best places in the World, I've travelled a bit and it's THE best place for food. You can have anything and it will be delicious. Thank you Sam
I'd love me some old school Porsches some day. A 67 911S, a 964 and 993 to add to the lot. Love the ones with the fender flares over the narrow bodies.
There's no such thing as too much 356. I love the look. Not practical for me, not to mention the expense. But so cool. So classic. That must have been a thrill. Side note, Paul Tarsey, publisher of the best podcast, historic racing news, said recently, in a moment of what surely must have been insanity, that he thought the 356 is not a good looking car. I love Paul, but he's wrong, they are gorgeous from every angle. Porsche are so unique as a company, with the classic program. They're really committed to keeping all the old cars on the road. Which is just excellent. I'm restoring my beloved 996.1, slowly, and making good progress, she's a solid daily with 98k miles and mechanically very sound. The funnest car I've driven since my beetle in the 80s, my 335, more engaging then my series 1 Elise or my old Miata. You can steer it with the gas pedal all day. Timeless, smooth, curvy with just enough torque to keep up with traffic, and after about 3500 rpm, that sound and the peaky hp, delicious. New cars, even sadly, 911s, are mostly all sharp angles and edges. And they are far too fast imho, unless you're at the track. I can have more fun in a 356 or 912 then in a modern, 500hp sports car. Give me the classics, the 356, the E-Type, the 911... I hope you get a 356 and drive it like you stole it. Or make an outlaw, call Rob Emory he'll hook you up. It's only money.
I love the fact you’ve been to Sportclasse again! I was watching your 2019 video yesterday, I was at the Maranello Legacy event in Porto where you’re going and I saw you filming the Carrera GT
I almost purchased a 356 B for $3k in the mid-seventies but backed out when the seller told me he had just spent $1800 for a new crankshaft (that amount didn't include labor). Just like today, you could purchase a steeply-depreciated, used foreign beauty (when they were still beautiful) but go bankrupt trying to keep them running. (A friend specialized in repairing XK-series Jags and would charge $5k just for a tuneup--it was nearly impossible to properly adjust the carburetors, among many other challenges.)
I'll try and keep this brief - generally the older the 356 the more the price/cost. That said the 1964/1965 C Coupe is the most modern, reliable, factory upgraded (disc brakes, etc.) and least expensive 356 - I know doesn't make a lot of sense. We purchased/fell in love w our '65 C Coupe about 14 yrs ago and put about 10,000 miles a year on her! Actually cleared the garage of our more modern Porsches because we always grab the 356 keys for a drive or trip. Pull the trigger and get one - you will never look back, be a "Rock Star" in the Pcar world and if you do sell it you probably won't loose your money :)
Did you watch the Nürburgring race in the last 24 hours!?? Ferrari won this morning! I love the old classics. I've fallen in love with classic Ferraris from the 60's and 70's. The Dinos. But Porsches are beautiful too.

Lovely video! Was at this location last year, amazing views and food! Everyone should try the Choco Frito (fried calamary) in Setúbal!
OMG! Love it Sam! You’ve gotta get one! And keep driving the other models! I realize with the New Baby that it might be tight but if you can? Get one! Great Video keep up the GREAT WORK 🤙🏽
I miss my 62’ 356B terribly! I should’ve NEVER parted with it. It is like that older, comfortable, stylish pair of leather shoes you can always count on to make you happy when you wear them.
Porsche has spoken to every generation and never strayed to far from its roots. I was and 80s kid and the 964 turbo S from the movie “Bad Boys” is just about perfection on wheels. I’d take a 930 just because they can be had for far less money and can be made to look and sound just as good
Sam You need to drive these cars differently to get the best out of the rear weight bias. Its slow in and fast out on corners using the traction too pull you round the bend and don’t, as you did, brake mid corner. Also, its 2nd gear and then into the third gear as you come out of the corner not 3rd all the way round. What you are looking for is smooth driving and avoid the brakes as you proceed. Use the front side windows for air pointed towards you and keep the revs up- you were constantly dropping them down the range. Also, regardless do fit and use seat belts; that steering wheel isn’t friendly if you make sudden contact. The only error you made on starting was not depressing the accelerator fully on start up as it doesn’t have an electric fuel pump. It was difficult to start as you drove, got it hot, stopped and the fuel in the carbs evaporated, so they were empty when you came to restart- a schoolboy error but easily made. Finally, slow down the gear change - its not a modern box and you need to give it time to engage so a more measured 1 down to 2 and uoto 3 as you say those words to yourself would save the box and ensure clean easy gear changes. The C is by far the easiest to run and with better stopping it has the edge on all the others. take 4 cam is extremely exotic and needs basically constant and thorough maintenance and it would frustrate you- plus they are 4 times more expensive. if you are in the UK and need help looking at one or want to try out a rhd C let me know. lee
Love this, and the 356, although I would consider it more of a 50s car than a 60s car. You should drive a '65-'69 911 to sample the true 1960s Porsche experience.
Love the video, amazing scenery too! If you get the opportunity and haven't already you should really try out a Lancia Fulvia (preferably first gen) Amazing cars, just ask Harry Metcalfe! 😉
Identical 356 as my own :inlove:, but you forgot the extra dimension of the body type BT5 and BT6 that switched during the Model B era :D... You should get one next to your GT3 as I'm awaiting delivery of my 992 GT3 next to the 356
Sam + Porsche = always a good combination.
Na na na, Sam + Tony
Finally more Portugal content. Hope to see a few more videos from this underrated country.
Tony will be horrified!! I bet he calls it a beetle. 😂😂 great video Sam your enthusiasm is infectious.
was thinking exactly the same
"it's more than free years old. it's crap"
the guys a neanderthal
Tony is smart. It *_is_* basically a Beetle. Except many Beetle models are far superior. Might as well buy a Trabant.

This is the best example of how it is important to go the origin of something to understand it better! Kudos Sam!

Love this kind of content. Keep it up Sam!🧙🏻♂️
Just get a 105 Series Alfa Giulia either a Coupe or even a Giulia Super saloon - perfect for you and good aftersales support in southern England
in 77 i had a 58 356A 1600 super as a daily driver. drove it across the usa, twice. no problems. unbelievable. love classic porsche cars.

I have a 1963 356 B, it is a dream to drive !! so solid and not a squeak or rattle to be heard.
8:51 could quite easily be a Forza Horizon loading screen. Unreal!
Very nice to see you in Lisbon and enjoying your country. 🎉
My 1969 912 was great fun, 5 speed manual, 4 cylinder from 356. Compatible with 911 upgrades.
For a vintage car I would recommend an Alfa 105. Then turn it into a restoration project to adapt it to a GTA spec. Best way to enjoy a car and lock in the renovation value added.
Fantastic!! Hope you find one, searching with you!😊😎
One of the most beautiful cars ever, and white with a red interior? And that exhaust note... (Chef's kiss)
Cool video Same, the classic Porsches are very elegant and simple in their design.
Awesome Sam. Glad you got the porsche bug. I know you have had the bug for a while. But aren't the 356s just gorgeous. Kind regards Bob Rose Northampton UK 🇬🇧
Really enjoyed this one. Great change up from the modern classic focus. The shop makes me want to go to Portugal just to see it.
I have been in Sportclass with my son after watching Sam´s first video with them, and ended up staying almost 1.5hr with Andre and his staff explaining to us details and history of almost every car they had there. Lovely and passionate people...
I picked up a 1963 356B last fall! Awesome little car runs just as you described. Drive it like you stole it 😂😂
Your watch at 12:10 looks so nice with the Porsche interior 😍
That was a fun ride, having Tony chirping in the passenger seat would have been a hoot as well.
Been watching a few of your videos now and got to say very enjoyable. 👏 Keep them coming and keep real - love anything Porsche 😃
Sport Classe Lisbon what a place.
I'm Portuguese and I'm so found of this place it's history and heritage.

Setúbal peninsula is one of the Best places in the World, I've travelled a bit and it's THE best place for food. You can have anything and it will be delicious.
Thank you Sam
Trip to California to see Rod Emory should be on the horizon. That 356 Outlaw they make over there is incredible!

A refreshingly different video.
Sam discovers that less is actually more…
He’ll be out in a 2cv next!
Excellent 👍
They can be summed up in one simple word. COOL, and I would love to just go get ice cream in one.
Thanks so much for the videos I enjoy them a lot, I like your no nonsense approach, keep it up !!!
Sam, great video and review as always. Best D
The 356 is in my top 5 classic car collection along with 1955 300SL gullwing, Jaguar E-type series 1, 1964 1/2 mustang, Lamborghini muira.
Fun Video!
Looks like a blast to drive!
I love the fact you’ve been to Sportclasse again! I was watching your 2019 video yesterday, I was at the Maranello Legacy event in Porto where you’re going and I saw you filming the Carrera GT
Hope you get the chance to drive an Alfa 1300/1600/1750/2000/GTA, because that's a car I could see you actually buy :)
Didn't even know we had this kind of workshop in Portugal, nice
I always enjoy your videos. I hope to see more classic Porsches on your channel in the future, fun
Love the classic car videos
You definitely need to go jump into some classic alfas 🤩🤩🤩
I almost purchased a 356 B for $3k in the mid-seventies but backed out when the seller told me he had just spent $1800 for a new crankshaft (that amount didn't include labor). Just like today, you could purchase a steeply-depreciated, used foreign beauty (when they were still beautiful) but go bankrupt trying to keep them running. (A friend specialized in repairing XK-series Jags and would charge $5k just for a tuneup--it was nearly impossible to properly adjust the carburetors, among many other challenges.)
I may have seen you guys driving down the Grossglockner today. I was driving a white wagon and I pulled aside to let you guys pass.
Great video, love the potted history of the fabulous 356. Wonderful scenery too.
As an owner of a 1958 356A and a 1960 356B Super 90, at last Sam! At last!

GREAT VIDEO!!! Please buy and drive a 356 and please then share it with us in your pleasant to watch style...🙂
Classic porsches are unicorns ❤

I should’ve NEVER parted with it. It is like that older, comfortable, stylish pair of leather shoes you can always count on to make you happy when you wear them.

Wow…I need to put Portugal on the visit list. That was gorgeous. Come on Sam, get a bonkers TVR.
The C version is better just for the disc brakes alone.
PS: it makes you giggle at LEGAL speeds too!
Love this, and the 356, although I would consider it more of a 50s car than a 60s car. You should drive a '65-'69 911 to sample the true 1960s Porsche experience.
Look at sam with the footwork
Love love love the 356. Brilliant video sir 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful car! An Emory 356 is a dream of mine.
You should get a 356! It would be really sick seeing you with that car on this channel and doing this with it!
What a car!! Stunning full of character
Love the video, amazing scenery too! If you get the opportunity and haven't already you should really try out a Lancia Fulvia (preferably first gen) Amazing cars, just ask Harry Metcalfe! 😉
Great videos Sam !!😊😊
YES SAM!! The 356 is definitely the way to go. Amazing video like always.
Good footwork Sam.
Excellent content, thank you.
@seenthroughglass Just try an Ur-911. That's what you should be trying...bang on 60s and much much better.
Loving the content, year on year you’re getting better at this, keep up the good work
Sam, you’re driving this faster than the GT3 around the Ring 😂❤
190 Sl is also a great car from the 60s❤
If you get one you should contact Rod Emory for some special bits
Loved this, loved this a lot! Sam... Test a Diablo already...
Dreamcar, that was a real postercar when i was a lot younger.
I'm so jealous! I wish to drive this car in New York, I don't know why!
SAM!!! There is a green 924 back there you just ignored!!!😢
Identical 356 as my own :inlove:, but you forgot the extra dimension of the body type BT5 and BT6 that switched during the Model B era :D... You should get one next to your GT3 as I'm awaiting delivery of my 992 GT3 next to the 356
There's a peachy-looking 356 C at Paul Devyea at the moment... ruby red with tan, LHD...
I sure hope you will find and buy a 356 and drive it! Such cool cars...
