My 03 beetle has been stranded at work for days. My little 125lb lady self managed to change the battery all by myself watching your video! Saved me so much money and lots of angry tears! Thanks from 9 years on the future!
I know its been 5 years since you posted the battery removal in a VW Beetle but I got to tell you your video was on spot and saved me a bunch of work. Thanks !
Whoever you are...Thanks a lot! Lost my job, had to leave car for a few months in rented parking, my battery died, car keys stolen, locksmith said he couldnt programme keys with a flat battery, couldnt afford a mechanic, got a parketing ticketing due to rental guys refusal to renew rental space cause they thought i planned to dump the car, ticket increased daily, scrapped money for a new battery amd found this video, changed battery and got new keys...on second thought...im gonna buy a bicycle from now on!
June 2023 your video is very descriptive and helps out a lot. My sister has one these and we couldn’t believe that it took all of this just to change out a battery. So thank you the job got done way before me but I could do it watching your video as a tutorial.
Thank you so much for posting your video. This was a great help. It only took me about 2 hours from start to finish incliding going to purchase the battery. VW must take pride in punishing customers on easy repairs! Headlights are a nightmare as well!! Thanks again
I was so fortunate to find and view your video. Like the previous gentleman, your detail was indeed spot on. Nowadays many of the auto stores won’t touch this process because there are extra items that have to be moved or removed. Took me a couple of hours to do the job and I modified the covers in order to make it easier. Thanks again.
The best RUclips video on changing battery in VW! 👍 My 2009 New Beetle, has same layout but I chose not to bother disconnecting the air cleaner intake. I just removed terminals, unclipped and slid fuse box back, removed battery cover and pulled battery out. Evidently, the jerks who charged me $200+ to change the battery the first time didn't bother bolting battery back down - empry hole - no clamp, no bolt there.
Thanks! This was extremely helpful. I was able to follow you and remove my battery in 10 min. The difficult task is putting the new one back in and making sure not to drop any screws or parts. If you do drop something, I recommend a long piece of rebar with a nice strong magnet on the end. It retrieves anything!
Fabulous Video!!! What took all of my time was re-installing the battery hold down. You might want to tie a piece of string onto the hold down, so everytime it falls down you can find it, without taking the engine compartment apart. Without the hold down problem probably would have taken 30 min, and that's being generous!
Thanks for posting this video. Made me a "hero" with the wife after getting the summer car up and going in about an hour. Watch that 13mm screw! If you drop it, you're gonna be fishing for awhile underneath as most everything underneath is covered. That was a good 15 minutes I'll never get back, lol. Ours was a 2010 Limited Edition, your instructions worked perfectly. Damn that plastic box!
Word of advice.I'm currently working on my wife's 2007 VW Beetle and, as I guessed, you can ABSOLUTELY change the battery out WITHOUT removing the box.The battery slides to YOUR left once the large intake hose has been completely removed, the terminals are disconnected and the 13mm screw has been taken out. Just lift the battery and slide to the left. Also did not have to remove the plate that keep the fuse box in placeMy battery just came out in 15 minutes and I don't have to screw with trying to replace that boxHappy "DIYing!"
I just replaced a battery on a 2008 and like mentioned above I was able to remove the battery just by disconnecting and removing the fuse panel. The old battery was completely dead and no programming or visit to the dealer.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU. Your right it is a stinking pain to do but your instructions were excellent. This was two women doing this and we had no trouble because you gave such good directions - you didn't forget anything. Thanks so much. Good job.
Thanks. Your video showed what I needed to know to swap the battery on my 2006 beetle TDI. On mine I did not have to remove the airbox. I had the previous battery replaced by the local VW dealer. If I remember correctly, they charged me over $300 for a battery that only lasted a few years. This time I bought one at Costco for much less.
Thanks soooooo much for taking the time to make this video! NO ONE could have been more thorough! Excellent job, and awesome camera man! PS: you cracked me up, when you almost lost it on that F***** bracket! lol!
Just used your vid to replace battery in 2009 bug, you saved me a lot of time, THANK YOU !!!!! And like you said, computer doesn’t need reset, got battery from napa, parts guy said I’d have to have computer reset, just a way for Volkswagen dealerships to make, gouge money out of owners.....that napa battery cost $173.00 - guess it’s been a while since I bought a battery, but that seems too high !
Thank You for the video as it helped in figuring out my Wife's Beetle. The problem I had is that the battery died when it was -3 outside with a -20 wind chill. The battery box you kindly showed the removal of didn't make it as the cold made it so brittle it basically shattered when I tried to take it apart. Worked around it by deleting the box and keeping the padded cover around the battery for protection. I coated the terminals with anti corrosion spray as they are more exposed now. I was able to cinch down the fuse box with one long loop of cable tie around the entire battery. Will leave it this way as I'm not going to go through the box issues again. Take Care
Just replaced my battery in my 2003 VW TDI Only difference from this video is the cowling on top of the motor needs to be removed. The power steering reserve removed and there is another clip on the passenger side of the fuse box which needs to be pushed down to slide it off. Great video THANKS
This video made my day,,,,crazy as all get out,,,could not have done it without help,,,,awesome info bro....!!!! I would not have this car if it was not for the fact how fast it is,, bought a new rag top for it,,all set..!
Greetings from England. We have a 2008 TDI cabrio which is almost the same with just a narrow pipe and a connector on the filter. Took minutes after watching your video. I could maybe have got it out without removing the air filter but it was no sweat to remove it, and much easier. Thanks.
hahahaha, gotta love it , working in tight quarters is a bear. You describe everything very clear. Your camera person is also fantastic. AAA does not replace batteries on VW Beetles and maybe for other VWs for the same difficult access reason.
Thanks for the video. All the pain and frustration was as you described, but without your video it would have not been possible. I really appreciate your help.
You should teach ! Seriously good job ,well explained and best of all you emphasised critical points of the install that take away the guess work on alighnment ect.Very helpful thanks again.
Thank you Sir!!!! This is THE BEST STEP-BY-STEP DIY battery removal for VW Bettle 09 without damaging or breaking plastic battery case. TIP: disconnecting the vaccume tube on left side of the battery (engine side) and moving it out of the way. (just squeeze ring with fingers and pull apart) ) Allow you to reach down underneath and easily pull tabs on bottom and it will slip right out. **Removing the air box gives you more to pull out the old and place the new battery.
I guess that I’m the only one who has re & re’d a battery without removing the air box or the vacuum tube as per ur Tip. But, I have decades of cursing experience so I don’t suggest this method for anyone under the age of 70. Removal was fairly easy, my 3rd replacement, but if I had remembered how the Mass AirFlow sensor disconnects from the air box, it would have been easier reinstalling. I’d appreciate any tips from the peanut gallery. Even the Parts department advisor couldn’t pull up a schematic to show my where or how the clip disconnects. I know it ain’t rocket science but I ran out of explicits. As it turns out, getting the battery back in without removing or disconnecting any hoses is akin to a great blue whale giving birth, lots of gas expelled ! My final push miraculously resulted in a clicking sound and all of a sudden, the positive battery terminal and fuse box were in their rightful places as the battery found its comfortable spot. Who knew it was gonna be that easy ! Haha ! So thx again for posting this vid with Adam’s Tip, giving me the confidence to tackle this job once more and retain my sanity.
Thank you, very helpful, especially for a layman, but I have a question. When I opened the hood, it was apparent that the last time I had the battery changed by my local garage, they didn't know what to do either. The hard shell was broken into two pieces, no soft case around the battery, and the battery clamp to lock it down was missing (as well as other screws you mentioned). I managed to change the battery successfully, it was much easier with the broken case actually :), but...how important is that clamp? I have been driving for years without it I guess, it's obviously heavy enough to sit pretty firmly, but am I in danger? UGH.
Thanks for the video. Just finish replace the battery in my 2009 bug, now I know the true Germany engineering!! LOL , the replacement process is soooooo painful, who the hell design this, sooo user unfriendly
Thanks for the video…I’m gonna have to try tomorrow. I see that you had to tilt the battery to take it out which means the new battery has to be tilted as well while putting it in. Aren’t the car batteries not to be tilted more than 45 degrees or so?
I am thankful for this video, with your help I have it out in about 20 minutes. However, putting in dropped bracket, didn't have magnet, borrowed one. Needless to say I got it in about hour later. If I may ask, the intake hose I am sure I have it in correctly but this is my summer car for over 3 years. Is there any way I can tell I may not have it on? Dumb question I am sure but since I am the only person who works on my vehicle want to be sure.
In our 2005 New Beetle the design mistake with one flexible plastic battery surrounding enclosure has been corrected. It is split into two parts: the left part is clipped at the bottom to the battery holder base plate and has two triangular shaped sliding joints with the right part that extends under the overhanging metal in the front right corner. I had to remove one bolt of a (brake?) fluid reservoir attached to the left half of the battery enclosure first. When the left half is removed the front central battery fixing screw can be accessed much easier. The right half can remain in place. My rear bottom clip was damaged anyhow and allowed some flexibility to extract and reinsert the battery.
We own 3 Volkswagens and after this battery nightmare and other issues I will never buy another one again. Kia is the new peoples car, easy and inexpensive maintenance.
I just replaced my battery on 2008 same setup didn’t have to remove anything but the battery. Just had to tip it an finagle a little bit but took 10 min.
Why did you remove the positive terminal first? You should always remove the earthed (negative) terminal first to avoid the risk of touching bodywork while removing the positive causing a massively nasty shock!
How the hell are you meant to get the bolt through the retaining plate?, I lost mine somewhere in the engine bay, but sod it!, it's so tight a fit that it aint for moving anywhere.
My independent VW mechanic ended up doing it for the same price as the 2 auto parts stores I called. Uncommon battery. I watched the whole thing. We had reset the stereo with a code from the manual. If u have original radio you will need that code or go to dealer to make the radio work. We left the insulating layer off to make it easier to reinstall battery. Tell us your experience candle.
This helped a lot. I did like taking the air manifold off just to make more room. (Had to do it before to work on the right front head light.) Thanks so much for posting this. As for taking the large passenger side slide cover off. I worked a long flat head screwdriver between the plastic and the battery to "pop" the clasps. Hope others find that useful.

there is a plug in on the Air breather on the back. How do you get the plug to come out. He does not show this on his video
Helps to have a strong suction cup for headlight removal. I have a unused sink (small) plunger just for headlight removal.

I just replaced a battery on a 2008 and like mentioned above I was able to remove the battery just by disconnecting and removing the fuse panel. The old battery was completely dead and no programming or visit to the dealer.
This was great, I thought it would! Glad I kept reading.
Helpful video. I changed out my wife's 2004 VW Beetle battery with your help. After the fact, nothing needed to be reset.

I just replaced my battery with minimal fuss. Thank you, sir, your video was deeply appreciated.
I'm with you on working on these cars. They are a major pain in the ass to work with. Very good video, thank you! 👌
thank you!! I'm a single woman and they wanted to charge me $200 for this job. I wish I could buy you a beer for saving me all that money!!
Thank you, I'm glad to help. Do me favor take the cost of the beer and give it to your local Catholic Church. God bless you, you are very kind.
As a AAA technician I charge $65 for non standard installation
Thank you so much, I can't imagine doing this without your video! Our replacement went very smoothly because of you video.

Your video saved me a lot of money. I too had a hard time setting the new battery in. But all good after a few attempts. Thank you for posting !!
Thank you! worked out great. I did it on a 2007 VW beetle convertible: No radio code needed:) Great instructions
So you were able to replace the battery and there were no needs to take it to the stealership??
Yea I was! Mine was a 2007 VB convertible. Worked great, you're right it was a job! got er done though, thanks!
I was about to ask if I have to put the radio code again. You saved me!
Thank you so much! This helped with my 2009 Volkswagen Beetle - so much patience was needed but it was worth it!
Thank you so much!! I got it out in 10 minutes, without your Video that would have been impossible.

Great video. Stopped my dad from having a heart attack when I bought a new battery.
This video alone is a reason why I wouldn't buy a VW.
Calbenmike bought one.... regret it! upside down on it and maintenance is either costly or way more difficult than it should be! :(
For a 30 minute job. You just wouldnt buy a car? Nice
Very useful video, thanks! You got lucky that this one didn't use the metal bracket holder though, I've never dropped a bolt so many times.
Thank you so much! Without your video it would have been a nightmare.
Thank you so much for this video! You saved me so much time, aggravation, and money!
Wonderful! Done, I replaced the battery without problems, step by step according your video ! Thank you very much!
Your explanations and subtitles were so funny and helpful. thank you!
From France, thanks a lot !!! A great help !

The only danger might be if the battery comes loose and arcs against metal like in an accident or maybe a very bumpy road.
Great Job! Well documented with great video!
thank you
Great video perfect illustration of why to not let your battery die.
Thank you for this video. I have a 2008 Conv Beetle and its stored in the winter. I will now be able to do this on my own. Thanks again ~
June 2024 thank you so much this was really helpful
That little bit of honesty was really funny
Thanks for the video. Just finish replace the battery in my 2009 bug, now I know the true Germany engineering!! LOL , the replacement process is soooooo painful, who the hell design this, sooo user unfriendly

Great video! Thanks from Sweden.
You should teach mechanics! This video saved my life and my wallet lol. Thanks a bunch!
Thank You!! I’m about to do this as we speak in July 2019
I am thankful for this video, with your help I have it out in about 20 minutes. However, putting in dropped bracket, didn't have magnet, borrowed one. Needless to say I got it in about hour later. Awesome video! Thanks! 30 min start to finish thanks to your help.
Ron Wow, this video made it happen without the guess work. Many thanks!
Good job! Thx for a great vid and explanation.
We own 3 Volkswagens and after this battery nightmare and other issues I will never buy another one again. Kia is the new peoples car, easy and inexpensive maintenance.
Great video! A lot of details. Thanks for posting.
This video is awesome thanks my friend!
What was that yellow stuff on the battery cover? And I don't blame you for cussing what a cluster f$&%@# the job is. Great video 😁👍🏻
Great video on how to. It was very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you sir. You are a saint and a Godsend.
Awesome video! Thank you very much!!
after my water pump this should be easy. this fing car , man. its made for tiny people with tiny hands to work on.
My water pump too but I kept diving and the head cylinder went... 1,000 then I pay that the next day my battery dies.......... the cars a bitch
Thanks I think I can do it after watching your video
Thank you so much for the post. It’s super helpful!
Thank you this video is the best one.
Really helped me thanks so much 2022😂
Thank you for the incredible video!
I just replaced my battery on 2008 same setup didn’t have to remove anything but the battery. Just had to tip it an finagle a little bit but took 10 min.
Thanks you help me!!!
What a life saver! Awesome! thanks!!
Why did you remove the positive terminal first? You should always remove the earthed (negative) terminal first to avoid the risk of touching bodywork while removing the positive causing a massively nasty shock!
Excellent video
My 2006 tdi beetle appears to have a one piece battery box with the power steering resevoir permanently attached to it
thanks, great video well done. great help.
si no funciona la reversa que podra ser si funcio si funsionan los demas cambios
Thanks for the video.
How the hell are you meant to get the bolt through the retaining plate?, I lost mine somewhere in the engine bay, but sod it!, it's so tight a fit that it aint for moving anywhere.
Great video
Thank you, very helpful!!!!
Thank you. What a PITA that was!
O.k., I'm about to do this on my '07. Do you have to "take it back to the dealer to reset the computer"? I'm hoping not.
Hey Brook -- at the end of his video he added text saying it didn't need to be reset at the dealer -- what was your experience like?
My independent VW mechanic ended up doing it for the same price as the 2 auto parts stores I called. Uncommon battery. I watched the whole thing. We had reset the stereo with a code from the manual. If u have original radio you will need that code or go to dealer to make the radio work. We left the insulating layer off to make it easier to reinstall battery. Tell us your experience candle.
Why did the codes not need to be reset? Because the battery was reconnected so fast?
Vary useful. Save hundreds in repairs.
Thank's for this Video ;-)
Well done video!
Good understandable tutorial
Great video thanks....wish I would have found it before I started, but helped me complete the job. These VW German engineers should be taken out and punk slapped. Removing and replacing the '06 Beetle is a PAIN IN ASS...very poor engineering.
