When Rongpei puts the earrings on Jia, the reaction from each concubine is interesting and reflects their character: Hailan understands Jia deserves to be punished but still looks away as she does not enjoy her suffering. Instead she looks over at Ruyi Mei visibly flinches and closes her eyes when Jia cries out. Shu has very little respect for Jia. Iirc, they don’t have direct conflict with each other so Shu does not have hate for her either. Even so, Shu is someone who is righteous and logical, and she can still watch coldly. Ling obviously enjoys Jia’s pain/ humiliation and is smiling the whole time. It speaks a lot about Ling’s vengeful (and later cruel) character
just a little addition, in the original novel Jin Yuyan was dripping blood all over the carpet, in karmic vengeance since Suoxin was also dripping blood all over the place when she was brought out of Punishment Bureau
Jia was so cruel to Ling when she was her servant. I get why she enjoyed it. Hailan was worried about Ruyi. She looked at her to see if she was still holding up. You can see how difficult it was for Ruyi to punish. Chun was also happy to see Jia suffer because of the things she did to her. Shu is is a Ruyi fan so it wouldn't bother her at all, Mei was still under the impression that Jia was her friend.
Love how most everyone hates Jia and also points out her mistakes with the truth just with more venom and the pure joy the other get with the pain of the earrings being put on Jia. RongPei being 'gentle' with the earrings is also just wonderful. I haven't seem much of this series so not sure what is the past with Rongpei and Jia. Rongpei was just savage with dealing with Jia and there was nothing Jia could do about it. The actress who plays Jia is just wonderful
in the original novel: 1. Jin Yuyan's _qizhuang_ was not only red but also had *eight embroidery roundels of peonies* (peony, the "king of flowers", is the symbol of the Empress) 2. Jin Yuyan was *dripping blood all over the carpet* , a visual vengeance for Suoxin, who was also dripping blood when she was released from Punishment Bureau
