Here Brad Gillis and Joel Hoekstra talk about their early guitar influences. Check out guitarworld.com to hear about Brad's days playing with Ozzy, Joel joining Night Ranger, and to learn how to play "(You Can Still) Rock in America."
Joel Hoekstra was in Night Ranger?! The man is everywhere! That dude is a real life Rock Star.
Joel is an awesome guy too. I discovered him on MySpace in 2006. He was very nice and responsive to messages. Later on when Night Ranger fired Jeff Watson, Reb Beach of Whitesnake and Winger filled in on NR live shows. I doubt the guys in Night Ranger put any weight into my messages, but I recommended Joel. Before long he filled in on a show in Raleigh, NC and soon they announced him as a band member. The 2011 Somewhere in California with Joel on it is one of the best modern albums by any of the 80s rock bands.
Brad Gillis is one of the greatest players off all time. Im not so big into Night Ranger, however Brads whammy bar work is hands down the greatest of all time. His work on Speak of The Devil is amazing!!
Absolutely awesome attitude. That's what guitar is really about - energy, fun and great musicality. God bless those two great musicians.
These guys are such a great band and such nice guys. I was actually hanging out with Brad and Joel at a hotel pool in Florida recently. It was very surreal. What was so great was that they actually treated me like a friend. I'll never forget it.
I remember when Speak of the Devil first came out, I was blown away by the guitar work. And then when I found out it was the dude from Night Ranger, I was like, "What? No way". So I've been a fan of Brad Gillis' ever since.
And Joel Hoekstra looks like he could be Sebastian Bach's twin brother.
Cool to see these guys excited about their craft, that's what makes a true musician.
That was a really cool interview, it really showed the love these guys have for the music and performing, and honestly, it would blow me away too, if I were on tour with Journey hanging out with Neal Schon! No matter where we're at in our careers, there's always going to be those moments of pure hero worship...
Brad Gillis is a classact and awesome guitar player
its because they seem really really in to it. every other is just like.. yeah, i played from this age.. did this and that now im here. they'r really indepth with what they talk about
ALL THE NIGHT RANGER GUYS ARE GREAT I TOURED WITH THEM SEVERAL TIMES !!!
Brad single-handedly saved Ozzy's career.
No he didn't lol maybe a tour
True man..
I saw them last year they wer awesome I had front row seats..I got a pick from Brad Gillis
Amazing to see that Brad stayed faithful to those Fernandes Signature models after 30-odd years since they were introduced.
RastaSaiyaman if you are talking about his red guitar it’s a fender 62 strat
RastaSaiyaman lol I think sorry if I’m wrong I watched his instructional video lol
Yeah Brad & Joel great People and Musicians, and must admit,i was honored to hangout with them at Emerald Theater in Detroit, while i was trying to introducing my self as an former singer of Horoskop band from Macedonia, and of corse they were nice to even listen to me,knowing that i'm not even a letter in their dictionary.Another thing im happy to hear about Joel joying my fave band of all times a speciali David Coverdale. But Honestly not happy about Daug Altrich getting out of the Whitesnake.Anyway i wish you the best wherever you are.
I don't think Brad G has had or have any drug or alcohol issues, he looks 25
Legendary band absolutely 🤘🎸
i saw these guys open for the scorpions over the summer. fucking flawless, couldnt have sounded any better for a live performance.
These guys rock...
These guys are awesome...I have both their autograph...great people, so kind...took the time to sign my stuff and EVERYONE else's after a show they did at Disney...absolutely great.

I remember back in 1992 they performed a free concert in Pasadena Tx at gorillas I was in front row I new what Brad was going to do he was my favorite guitarist anyway he was giving picks to all the girls he was putting his picks in his tounge I got his last pick the only guy he was mad it was his last pick he slapped it in my hand
Brad's riffs are the best
This is good, watch the whole thing.
I agree deadendkid....so much for integrity...
Can't argue with either of your choice of influences.
Practically covered the entire spectrum.
I don't think you mentioned anyone that I didn't
buy an album of or listened to growing up.
Eddie Van Halen, Billy Gibbons, Brian May, Dave Mustaine. These are my heroes, man.
brad is awesome! Ive met himmany times and he is always sweet and a genuine nice guy.
i like how he is still excited about guitar not a bitter rock star .
I always liked Brad Gillis playing ... very underrated, and was able to fill in the monstrous shoes of Randy Roads after Bernie Torme took a shit live with the Oz
Yes, he was indeed great with Ozzy. I loved how he did the classic Ozzy material. I never quite heard why Ozzy never did an album with Brad or why Brad didn't last long. Was it Brad's choice? Perhaps to rejoin Night Ranger? Brad Gillis, Rudy Sarzo, Tommy Aldridge. Great lineup.
Night Ranger in 92 where I god Brads pick
Brad Gillis = High Energy
Kelly Keagy....incredible drummer, great foil for Jack Blades vocally....one of the foundations of the band, huge love and respect for him.
Haha! I love your description!
Hahaha - That's soo true! I read that comment before the actual video came up and bang, it's jack bauer!
hell yeah !
AT LAST! Brad restored his Fernandes, looks like NEW now!
@javimari if you look at the rest of the interview, it's not the original...it's a limited re-issue. It's an iconic guitar though for sure!
Jeff Watson plays for Dennis DeYoung. Wish he would come back to Night Ranger.
check out his solo stuff, he is a monster player. This is one of his side jobs. He is a hired musician to fill a slot.
The mixing on the lav mics are really odd lol keeps distracting me, when it cuts off to complete silence on the last word of half the sentences. Guitars sound sick though, Brad Gilis is insanely talented. One of my favorites up there with Rhoads, Jake E Lee and Chris Poland
Great Americans !!!
Brad owns the second Floyd Rose ever built, the first was given to Eddie VH.
Looks bare bones, doesn't even have fine tuners. Pretty sure it was Neil S. from Journey got the third. I was in Guitar Player few months back, cool article on evolution of trem
a couple of two dudes I'd like to jam with!
@ddresbac That's a shame, is DDY still doing is Vegas bit?! I wish Jeff was back with Night Ranger!!
What ever happened to that Jeff Watson Guitar Player lesson where he flubbed the whole 8 finger thing? I can't find it.
Hey! Is this guy brad gillis the one who play paranoid speak of the devil, with the good base n lead solo??? Remeber?? If im not wrong it was 1982??? I mean the only live paranoid with the very best bass n lead solo!!!!
Yes that's the same guy,who came in Ozzy's band after Randy''s death.Unfortunatly Sharon fired him. Also Joel the other guy is just hired by D.Coverdale to play in Whitesnake.
Crap! Why they fired him??? His lead is awesome!!!! Till today i kept playing that live paranoid speak of the devil!!! If only they can reform back the band, and play it live!
***** He left NR to go to Whitesnake? They must be paying him a heck of a lot more because that certainly is a step down!
What about Blackmore ???
@deadendkid1968
He was summoned back to his homeworld
is the guy with the gibson the original guy he looks younger or something?
Wow nice Les Paul
I looked up "uncompelling" on wiki and found this video.
Correction "It was in Guitar . . . ." I wasn't, ha
I wish
Fernandes 1986 brad gillis model
@deadendkid1968 I have been wondering the same thing!?!?!?!?!
I liked Jeff Watsons work , but i enjoyed Hoekstra when he was with them , I saw Night Ranger with Styx and REO 5 years ago and they wer like being back in the 80's wit h Night Ranger ,... Sorry he leftto go to Whitesnake ,,, don't get that .....
how come they never mention Gary Moore?
Why would they mention Gary Moore in a Night Ranger guitar lesson?
Sorry I mean Joel
@randyrhoads82rip I believe a fernandes strat style
@gitariff AND HE LOOKS LIKE CHUCK NORRIS!!!!
Mama I'm coming 🏡
Brad Gillis looks like jack bauer
U watched Blues Brothers too many times
ooooooooohhhhhh ok
Joel is great but Jeff was the boss
Acdc
Swiss denture
@oceans20113 you met him ONE time, one time, and you can tell he's a jerk as a human being! Wow.
Gillis either has serious ADD or he snorted 3 lines before this interview
Naw. He's always been that way. He's a good guy.
That was my thought
He snorted something to, not to say he's not a good guy, and he is a great guitar player, saw night ranger in 86, they was great, had Jeff Watson with them then.
LMAO! RIGHT!!!??
if hes so into the virtuosos why does he not play like them?
Brad is very twitchy.
boring!!
Blah blah blah blah...
