- The HVR Steam Ranger on the 22 Oct 2023 was operated with locomotives W945, XA1401 and F40
Watch and Listen to the sounds of the 3 locomotives working their train up the Darling Range to Dwellingup.
This was a test run for the XA (built by Metropolitan Vickers of the UK using a Crossley engine) which was scheduled to operate some Diesel only Rangers during November the first of which was hauled with the XA & F40 - sadly the following three services would be cancelled due to high fire dangers that came with a hot spell of weather.
Wow Neil, that was a great video and shows the challenging conditions on the Dwellingup line in the wet.

The shot for me is at 21:19... three crews working together in slippery conditions hauling one very heavy train! Awesome video - thanks for sharing Neil.

But that sound across the valley is an interesting combination 😎
The X not looking good. They always were a smoky beast. And the drivers of the F would have to manage the sand well. Otherwise he would run low on air. The Fs worked well in multiple unit but struggled in the wet as single unit.
