  • Living a fast-paced life in Singapore is the norm, but have you stopped to ask yourself what exactly you are working so tirelessly towards? How frivolous are our life goals in the grand scheme of things? Are we taking our comfortable lives for granted? How can we find a balance between contentment and motivation?

The whole conversation pivots around one's perception of happiness and how one should proactively build his happiness. Being content can be happy. Being unproductive can be happy. Having nothing to do can be happy. More importantly, the person must understand why one is doing what one is doing. It's only when you feel empty inside then you know something's wrong in your life. No $$ or shopping or overseas trip can save you.
John has a point though. Contentment is hard to achieve if the tradeoff is that the family's minimal need cannot be met. A bit of hustle is still needed to meet the basic needs in life especially when you are no longer single or when you have sick parents to take care of.
Alternatively, evaluate how else you can do better as a person, as a dad, as a husband, and be discontented with that. You can never go wrong to constantly value-add to yourself.

At 47 years of age, I have a new perspective on life because I lost my wife of 20 years two months ago. Without someone to share my journey, I now realise that the most important part of life, to me at least, was to have someone to share your life journey with. And becos my wife n I do not have kids, I have no living reminder of the beauty of my wife to continue my journey with. Circumstances in life did not allow us to have kids but I would advise that if u can, do try to have them becos they are the greatest legacy of the love between your wife n you.

Agreed, thats why i give the best of my life to my kids, my career is 2nd priority. Singapore is all about work, no life balance. This is not living, its call existing.
Thats why i changed to low income job but with gd life balance

In all honesty, there are many ways to look at why life is meaningless. But, recently I was thinking of this mundane template lifestyle in Singapore. Is it attributed to our weather - the fact that we only have one season throughout the year? In Singapore, the season is the same at any time of the year, hence people may just feel like the whole year is going by. I noticed that people living in countries with 4 seasons, for example, always look forward to some change every few months. Another new season kind of equates to a new environment. I believe the change in environment mentally affect a person. Since we can't experience a change in environment, we plan a holiday during the year and really look forward to it.

I read somewhere that memories are very tied to seasons. One would remember an memorable event last winter, or last fall, 2 summers ago, for example. In Singapore, it all feels the same, because there is no change -nothing that makes you recall as well. Unless it is a damn good memory, I would probably forget about it. Which may be the reason why Singaporeans get out of the country a lot -to create memories that they will better remember (bc it is a trip, an impact more lasting)

Mentioning having someone whom you love more than yourself to keep you going is interesting. Personally, when I was feeling empty and lonely, I realised something similar to that. I had always affirmed self love and had a desire for self improvement, but this care for the self and no one else to love/ be in the company of really felt like I wasnt going anywhere. That was when i found flaw in the phrase "you should love yourself before loving others" my thoughts came to be, If i had no one else to love, I couldn't love myself. But of course, like all things, we need balance. We need love for ourselves and love for others. I had never thought of the question of having kids in the way that Id never have anyone else Id love more than myself if my partner dies first since I am quite young, so it was a major eye opener! I thoroughly loved this podcast and this specific topic as I've also spent a long time thinking about it, much like many others probably have. Glad to hear so many perspectives on this!

I'm working as a doctor, 12-16H a day, 6 days a week, no public holidays, 1 off day a week, constant stress and pressure at work and starting off my career 300k SGD in debt. If I were to quit, it would take me a crap long time to recover the time and money i've lost. There are no other alternatives available to me as well. I'm cornered and waking up every morning to get yelled at is going to give me a heart attack one day.

I'm someone who always thought that I would not want to conform to normalities in life, including working at a desk or be a regular student. I still believe this at the bottom of my heart, but my mind and body is giving up slowly but surely. Maybe it comes to the point that I don't have another that I love more than myself, but this constant contradiction happening inside of me is what that tears me apart many nights when I think before I sleep. To curb this noise that affects my sleep, I play videos to have someone talking in the background. I think the little guy in my head is very pissed that it can't talk to me at all.

anchoring your life's meaning to revolve around the person you love is not healthy. if someone with that life philosophy lose that someone, he would have lose his meaning in life. There will be a moment of loss, grief not only for a loved one but also the ability to carry on living without that meaning.

Life itself has no meaning, Life is an opportunity to create a meaning...

  • @SeventhArchipelago
    @SeventhArchipelago Год назад +5

One can find meaning by shifting your level of focus.
    e.g.
If one were to shift the level of focus up,
our sun will burn out in 5.5 billion years.
The current typical lifespan of 80 to 90 years is insignificant when compared to such a timescale.
No life is "meaningful" in 5.5 billion years.
So let's shift it down in the other direction,
let's say it's your birthday tomorrow.
Is such a day meaningful to the next stranger you see on the street?
Not that meaningful I would guess.
But is your birthday meaningful to you?
    To your parents or friends?
    I hope so.
Find meaning by shifting your level of focus.

I have been watching several episodes of daily ketchup and I have enjoyed the prog so far. But today, dunno why, for some strange reasons, I actually felt angry bcoz I felt the prog has trivialized the issues faced by our seniors although I am pretty sure this (trivializing) is definitely not the intention of the discussion panel. The prog has
failed to address real issues faced by seniors bcoz the panel folks are still young and are not in the shoes to understand the sentiments adequately. The part abt life has passed by and the person is starting to feel that life is meaningless, this is totally different from issues such as comparison to peers or what life should be. Yes, these are common issues of someone younger, in their 30s or 40s. A sense of meaninglessness and peer comparison, calling for contentment etc are entirely different issues altogether. I don't blame the folks here bcoz clearly, they have not reached that stage (65) yet. Please.... If the prog creators want to discuss such topics, dun just leave it to a group of young folks. At least call in or rope in someone older to do the sharing. No offense please, just my opinion.

hmmm...clearly, life is not a box of chocolate...In modern society, life is all about school grades, material gains, information upload, maternal bliss or maybe woes, and in the end of your life, you think you have watsed all these years. But the gentleman in the podcast was saying, isn’t that's what life is all about?
Sad to tell you the truth, very very very very few people in the world knew what is the true meaning of life. Not because we are stupid, but our sense of this world is so superficial.
We are just living at the tip of an iceberg, while 99% of life goes by without us knowing it or wanting to know it. We simply bochap. We want all the pleasure, the music, the havoc, the excitement, the F1, the new iphone launch date, the next big thing. Materialistic society such as Singapore knows only one thing: Money is everything in life. No money no talk.
There is a saying that goes something like that: Man cannot live on bread alone. The bread, in this case, is material wealth. The other side of material wealth is spiritual wealth. But I am not talking about religion. I am talking about inner peace. The truth is, very very few people ever experience true inner peace. Life without peace is like living in a desert without water. It’s very dry and lifeless. No matter how big is your house, your car, your bank account, you are still living in a desert. Just because you have never tasted true inner peace.
Peace is not something mandane or static. True inner peace is very active, progressive and dynamic. People have a wrong idea that peace is like sitting there doing nothing. It may appear like doing nothing, but a lot is happening inside, we just never experience it before. So we dunno. You have no idea how ignorant we are about the spiritual side of life.
All this questioning about life is because something inside you is bugging you to think beyond. Something feels very numb inside. Something feels very disconnected. That ‘something' is the spiritual side of us that we are unable to feel. And that makes us feel deem lousy and lifeless. I have been there before. I know what’s it’s like. And sometimes, when I am not careful enough, I do get into that inner emptiness again. I can tell you, it feels terrible. When your breath is lifeless, life sucks no matter what millions you have on the outside. It still feels suck.
What motivation, what contentment? All goes back to materialistic pursuits. All your guys know is matter and nothing else. Time to grow up. But you can’t be blamed. Even all or most of your teachers in schools dunno what I am talking about. So you have never been taught.

Majority of people's lives are boring, while interesting life are frown upon because it is not the "norm". Then, there is no "norm", what is normal for one may not be for another.
What the Redditors expressed are baseline true, the "chase academic achievements, chase higher salaries, chase a 'prestigious status'" is generally meaningless, unless it creates impactful memories or some sort. Why celebrities are perceived to have "glamorous" life is because it is not what ordinary Tom naturally goes through, same goes for famous footballers, etc.

Life is consisting of many duties of love given to us by God to take on and fulfill. As long as we do our duties with joy, it does not matter whether the life is 'templatized' or one is doing farming in Australia, it will be worth living. If God is not at the center of our life, then whether we are doing farming in Australia, or leading a routine life, it will always be meaningless because at the end of it, everyone will pass from old age or illness.
Because if without the sense of continuity to eternity, whatever you do, whether routine or non-routine, it is pretty empty.

will it be more comforting to know that...
life has no meaning. but we could make good with what we have been given?
like... we could read, write, run, cook etc. and that we have more than what others have.
i think.... maybe dont try to put so much pressure on what kind of life you think you SHOULD have.
and changes can start from something small first, and decide that you will be happy after u complete the task. e. g. like... if i run 100m today, i will feel happy. if i clean this corner of my room today, i will feel happy. if i say hi to someone in the lift, I will feel happy.

Seriously, that old man should learn to get a life. It is because of these kind of toxics peoples in the society that teach that life should be like that. Isn't it your own responsibility to learn to create the life you want for yourself.
If you feel that having a children is a bothersome, then you shouldn't have a kids in the first place. If you're not happy with what you're doing, then you should change what you are doing and enjoy what you are doing.

Hard disagree. Ancient Chinese civilisation uses 娘, starting with 'n'. Japan uses 'haha-oya' or 'oo-kasan'. Both have adapted the 'M' sound most likely due to western influence. These are just 2 examples I can think of the top of my head.

During the covid periods when celebrities were sharing their issues with lack of money because they only have xxx amount left, which is still a lot more than many people, do you think most people are just negating the experiences of celebrities, or are they just so far from reality that they are unable to be grateful with what they have?

cmon guys lets talk about prof Ben's blog post about HDB policies! But on this video, people always assume that kids will love you or care for you in old age. I look at the gen Z now, and somehow I dont get that sense that they will be beholden to look after parents in their old age. The next generation is becoming more individualistic like the West, losing the filial piety values of the Asians.

Please read the Quraan. It will help you to understand the purpose of life. It will be more meaningful. You may have the prejudice now on Islam as you relate it to Malay in this part of the World. It's a universal religion.
