- Saturday to Monday with 2 nights in the Wild Nephin National Park in Mayo. Starting at Bangor Erris and climbing Slieve Carr from the North, with a cold summit wild camp at 721m. A drop down along the Eastern corrie loughs the next day, past Scardun Loughs and wonderful waterfalls to the Bangor Trail. Lots of squelching took me to a new bothy at the Tarsaghaunmore River for a first bothy overnight in a stunning location. Followed the remainder of the Bangor Trail the next morning back to Bangor Erris. A walk of 36km with 1,400m of ascent/descent.

🤣 that Floatie feeling Gerry is never good. Loving the B Roll shots your getting. You got some really nice sunsets. You are so right about the acid in the bog. Can ruin your books. You can get the resoled. Even thou the soles still look in good nic. Love the bouncy bridge shot. Incredible stops you found. Your tent took a right battering but held up. Great video Gerry. Just brilliant.
Gerry I've watched your videos for a while now and that proves it , you are definitely hard-core 💯 . I have spent nights in the hills but always made my way home the next day . Two days hiking and two nights camping is another level 👌 . Loved it . Caught a glimpse of your Jamaica cake , one of my favourites 😍 ❤️
Cheers Mark👍 Most of my trips are one night though have done a few 2 nighters over the past year and they are definitely growing on me👍 It just means bringing some extra food and it opens up a whole difference experience being able to spend that additional time and plan a different route. I rediscovered the beauty of ginger cake on this trip - the ginger nuts have been relegated😊
Fantastic scenery, & your "cinematography" just keeps getting better 👍👍
Cheers Bazza👍 I always say that when you are in a special place it is just a matter of pointing the camera😊
Very beautiful Park. So interesting video lovely view mountain national. You make great video creator channel. Nice day for exploring with your video. Thanks you so much for your sharing please have a wonderful day from Angkor Wat temple
Thank you👍
Nice scenery there and at least you had a good shelter to sleep in.
Mayo is a beautiful part of the country and it was way cool to get out of the wind and cold for the second night, it felt almost like a hotel😊
Brilliant Gerry, the views and scenery was amazing. Never knew those bothy buildings existed!
Cheers Jonathan👍 There has been a bothy at Letterkeen Wood in the Nephin Begs for some time, though it is at a carpark and I don't think I would use it. This newly constructed bothy (Tarsaghaun Cottage) is in a much wilder location and was such a cool place to spend the night. There are also a couple of wilderness shelters in the Nephin Begs which are pretty cool too👍
Wow, that video was certainly worth waiting for Gerry. I`m really struggling to find the words to describe your videos Pal. All I can say is, thanks for sharing 😄😄😄
Cheers Martin👍 It was worth waiting for the trip for me, finding even a couple of days of fairly settled weather has been so difficult over the past few months, even then I didn't expect it to be that windy. it is rare that a trip to mayo doesn't bring something special and that was the case this time too👍
Nice video Gerry, lovely place for hiking. Well done
Cheers Mick👍 It is a stunning place for hiking and when you are there it feels like there is no one else in the world😊
Great video Gerry, you show off the countryside in a special way.
Cheers Mike👍 Though when you are in special countryside it is easy to show it off😊
Beautiful hike, lovely scenery. Thank you for sharing 👍
Thank you👍😊
Great trip Gerry! Beautiful views- looks like spring is right around the corner. Loved the first night sunset! Whew, that was a cold and windy night. Nice that you were out of the wind in a shelter the second night. The boardwalks and bridge were great. Enjoyed seeing this National Park! 👌😄👍👍
Cheers Jennifer👍 Slightly different from your National Parks though they have along term programme to introduce more native trees and move away from commercial non native forestry and preserve the blanket bog. It was a super trip and I definitely preferred the second night staying in the bothy😊 It is a very quiet place and I was lucky enough to have it all to myself😊
@@gerrymcveigh It’s great to hear about the long term programme! They’ve done quite a few environmental restoration projects in our area and they’re all a great success. Some of the lands in tidal areas that were converted to farmland have been restored. Many Dutch settlers, and others, built dikes and drained the land, but now the farms are being removed. We have the big incentive to protect the wild salmon and the rivers. I’m really happy they’re going to preserve the bogs. 👌🙌🙌😁
Cracking video Gerry. Such a stunning route and I loved all the shots you got. The one around 13:55 of you sitting down was class, there were so many class shots. Your home away from home on the second night looked really good and I'd be the very same about someone rocking up in the night. I hope the boots hold up, I looked them up so they're on my shortlist now
Cheers Jason👍 It is always cool to try a new angle in a place that I have visited a good few times. It was a great trip and was good to be out for the 2 nights. The bothy was pretty cool and I knew there wouldn't really be anyone about though the mind does its own thing😊 The soles seemed to have held with the superglue so I will keep using them👍
Great video, Gerry. That would be a worthy episode of nationwide. I'd say a bit of that cake, and a cup of tae went down well.
Cheers Joe👍 The cake and tea are a perfect combination😊
Great film man . .spectacular views and that camp looked like a seriously tough night and morning .
Fair play getting it done .
Your shots are great , each one thought provoking and calming .
Cheers
Thank you for the kind words👍 It was a cold one - it took down booties, my down jacket, down sleeping bag, bivy bag and tent to keep my toes warm❄😊 the second night was much comfier😊
great video, beautiful scenery.
Thank You👍 It is a stunning part of Ireland😊
Wow that light over Achill was stunning. West coast sunsets are just incredible, would love to explore Mayo some day. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have already taken a few midge bites this year! I think with the warm weather and lack of wind they are joining us early :(
I agree that those sunsets in the west of Ireland are pretty special☀👍 Mayo is a stunning county and it is well worth spending some time exploring all it has to offer. I did see some flying things myself so am expecting them to be back in force shortly🦟😒
Scenery is very beautiful place
It is a very beautiful place👍😊
“Floaty feel” that’s definitely a nope, back up, back up, moment. 😂
Eddie, it was solid ground that moved underneath and i wasn't taking the chance so backing up and walking around was definitely the preferred option😊
@@gerrymcveigh I know the feeling and I find it unsettling, and that expanse of bog there looks daunting. Great video again, thanks.
Stunning. It’s somewhere that’s on my list 😀
Cheers👍 The Nephin Begs and Mayo have a quality that is almost magnetic in its attraction for walking and wild camping😊
@@gerrymcveigh They are definitely shouting at me 😀
Fabulous journey Gerry and you obviously enjoyed it immensely 🙂 That bothy was a great find, so unusual in Ireland compared to say Scotland. I hope it's looked after better than that other disgrace you discovered 😡 Thanks for bringing us along 😊 👍
Cheers Niall👍 It was great to go back to a favourite area with a plan to take in new ground and it worked pretty much according to plan, except that I was slower than planned and had to make some adjustments - though that was okay👍 The new bothy is built to last and it was great to spend a night there. The other one would have needed regular maintenance to keep it going after the initial work and it is in a spectacular location, if in a pretty depressing state.
Excellent as usual Gerry, have to say the first night looked Baltic. Wonderful find on the Bothy, hopefully it is maintained. Great video, and an inspiration to get out in nature more.
Cheers Peter👍 It was baltic, it was the cold easterly wind that was much stronger than I thought it would be❄🌬 The bothy was super cool and I am sure not many people have stayed in it as it looks like it is just about finished. it is in a superb location. Always good to get out in nature👍
Brilliant again Gerry. Wild camping at the remotest summit in Ireland I think? The Bothy looks well, we passed it a few years ago (Aug 2020) and it was under construction, we wondered if it was going to be a Bothy or what it was going to be. The bridge is amazing and so unexpected too, I took a video of Dillon shaking it exactly the same as you did!
Cheers Patrick👍 It certainly feels like the remotest summit in Ireland when you are there. The bothy is constructed to a pretty high standard and is in a wonderful place on the Bangor Trail. When I first saw that bridge a few years ago I was amazed at it out in the middle of nowhere - I think it had just been completed then after the last one was washed away. You just have to bounce on a suspension bridge😊
That was a great watch Gerry! Wonderful variety in your shots and entertaining chat along the way 😊 Great to learn of that Bothy - I wonder where the funding came from and if there will be a maintenance plan. It makes me think about updating my will to fund the likes of Mountain Meitheal. Great views and overview of the area as ever Gerry! Was that some Ginger Cake perhaps 🤔
Cheers Miriam👍 My sense is that Mayo County Council and Europe provided funding for work done in the area. The bothy is very impressive and built to last like those stone houses of old. The short section of boardwalk was like floating on clouds after so many km of wetness along the Bangor Trail. It was ginger cake - I took a notion to bring it along and it was like nectar with a cup of tea.😊 Any update on the sleeping bag?
@@gerrymcveigh the Bothy is such a good news story (and the boardwalk!) 😊 No news on the sleeping bag, I haven’t been back up but a few eyes have been keeping a look out but no word has filtered back to me yet. I was out at the weekend in my 3 season bag, such luxury after my -3 night with no bag 😉
Great stuff Gerry. I remember the Jim Bowen camping spot from another video when it was murkier and midgier. It looked incredible there though in that winter Mayo sun!
Cheers Steve👍 The Jim Bowen camping spot is spectacular and I will go back again to make sure that I get to experience it in better conditions. Mayo and the Nephin Begs are so cool at any time of the year and they certainly were on this trip😊
Well, you did the return trip to do the circuit we discussed in the comments after your last Nephin Begs trip then Gerry! Looked a bit brisk up there , but at least the huge cairn gave you a bit of shelter from the NE wind :). I did warn you about that section of the the Bangor Trail though 😳😂. It was bad enough at the end of a long, dry Summer, so I can't imagine how it was last month, even with the odd bit of raised platform like the last bit before the footbridge. Some trail maintenance needed at some point. I guess the high-level horseshoe route I described would have been impractical once you had dropped down to the loughs though. The bothy was nearly complete when I was there, but no doors or windows. Looked very well-built though and I guess it will be well-used by people doing the Western Way, as well as the few hillwalkers who brave the Ballycroy wilderness. I will be back this year and hopefully will manage a few of the Nephins accessed from the south and east. I will use some of your videos for planning reference! Another great video adventure. Thank you.
James, it looked like a good route approaching Slieve Carr from the north and I have to say it was. I had really wanted to camp at Scardun Loughs and then climb Nephin Beg though that was never going to happen with how slow I travel when filming😊I don't think I would go that way again though as the approach from the south is better (from Letterkeen and taking in Nephin Beg). The Bangor Trail was wet though I knew it was going to be and it was okay😊 The bothy was like something sent from heaven after the cold and windy night on the summit of Slieve Carr and it saved me from another cold and windy night - I agree it will be a fantastic place to stay for those passing through on the Bangor Trail or otherwise👍 I will probably be back to the Nephin Begs too at some stage this year😊
Perjalanan yang luar biasa , Anda jelas sangat menikmatinya. Itu adalah penemuan yang bagus,Terima kasih telah membawa kami bersama
Thank You👍 It was a great trip.
A decent couple of nights out there gerry. Wise to bypass the moor there. Ha, hindsight is a fine thing eh? That was a paradise beside that tarn I must admit. A Baltic blowy night on top and that - I know which I'd prefer. Awesome Bothy later on - shame about the former. I don't think you met one person. Remote indeed! Good going. All the best. Mark
Cheers Mark👍 It was a great trip and being away from it all for a couple of nights was good for the soul😊
@@gerrymcveigh A pleasure gerry - good to hear of the soul bro. yeah, it runs deep for sure. Have a great week ahead.
Yeah still quite cold at the moment. I think we have a forecast of snow in the next few days.
Roll on the summer☀🔥
Are there many Bothys around Ireland? I'm quite fascinated by them and think they're quite handy!
I only know of the 2 in the Wild Nephin National Park, though there may be others that I am not aware of. Definitely not as widespread as in Scotland. The one I got to use was certainly handy😊
Great video as always Gerry. Can I ask what cameras you brought with you? Some of the scenic shots are zoomed in and quite linear. Gives a great quality addition to the detail of your story.
Cheers👍 I have a GoPro Hero 9 for all the talking stuff and a Panasonic Lumix with a 12-60mm lens for all the other shots.
@@gerrymcveigh thank you for the reply 👍👍
Im planning a trip here with friends.. for 2024 any tips you can give me that are good to know?😊
It is a fantastic area to explore and the only tip I can give is to properly plan out what you want to do to get what you need from the trip. It can be pretty wet💧 and will have plenty of midges🦟 from April onwards. The new bothies are really cool as are the wilderness shelters if you are planning on staying overnight, though wild camping is pretty cool too😊 A place I am planning to revisit this year too👍
New sub here my friend! Cheers
Cheers Andrew👍
Nice find on the bothy. Where is it exactly mate?
Cheers👍 The bothy is about 7km south of Bangor Erris along the Bangor Trail as it crosses the Tarsaghaunmore River.
@@gerrymcveigh I'm amazed yet saddened that there aren't more.. There are plenty of boardwalks (which is a step in the right direction- pardon the pun) to get people out and about, but can you imagine a system of bothies all throughout the North and South?
It would be amazing! A small donation for upkeep or food or supplies for the next person through the door.
Agreed👍
Great video but I just can't help but cringe every time you pronounce Nephin "Neh-finn." The correct pronunciation is "Nay-finn"
I do a lot of cringing at my pronunciation too😊
