I met Randy, Ed and Scott Monahan when they played the Ranch Bowl in Omaha mid 1980's. I picked them up at the airport and took them to their radio interviews. They were all super nice. RIP Randy and Ed
Spirit and all of its reincarnations was one of the best bands ever. I know each band member thought it important to get into the R&R Hall Of Fame, so people would always remember the name. Their music was the tightest, their lyrics were intelligent and thoughtful. DAMN! What a great band. What a great man in Ed Cassidy.
Edward Claude Cassidy (May 4, 1923 - December 6, 2012) was an American jazz and rock drummer who was one of the founders of the rock group Spirit in 1967
While waiting for the show of Spirit, Moby Grape, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, I walked over to a long haired hippie guy wearing scarfs at the lighting and sound stage to ask when Spirit would start. He was friendly and said they were coming up next. Sure enough, it was Randy California.
Wow great interview. Ed has always been a fave and an influence . Never got to see the original Spirit but did catch Randy and Ed in the mid 70's when Spirit had reformed on Mercury records.
I didn't know Ed Cassidy had died until a few minutes ago. I'm kind of knocked or six by this. While I'm not a drummer "Mr Skin" was one of my biggest childhood influences in music. Shit
I've been trying to contact Jay Ferguson to interview him about the days with Spirit. He's doing the soundtrack work for NCIS/LA and a few weeks ago he used the keyboard riff from ICE, as background for a scene. Does anyone out there in Calif. know how to reach him?

I just learned of Ed's recent passing. He was easily one of Rock's best and most under rated durmmers...
He was way ahead of his time...now days there is a bald dude in every band and its cool to be bald...Ed paved the way
Ed Cassidy truly is one of the unsung heroes of Rock and Roll... a true legend.

Great to see Ed! Thanks for this interview.
Was Merrell ever popular? I heard his music at 15, so last year, and I loved his music.

After Randys' death, Cass led 'Spirit Revisited' with Michael Carpenter handling guitar duties. Check out his new efforts at Crime Scene Studios
