    I don't think these concepts are really related, at least not in their origins. The tritone sub works by keeping the tritone from the dominant chord of the key you're in. The augmented 6th chords work by expanding the dissonant aug 6th into an octave
    There's also the Neapolitan chord which is another similar sounding chord that also isn't really related to the others

    The name tritone sub is really stupid to me. I think it's an equally important way of getting from the 2 to the 1 as the 251, so calling it a sub a tritone above or below the 5 diminishes its relative importance.

      I think it's because you substitute the other dominant chord with the same tritone
