This is one of my favorite scenes of the whole show when I first read it in the manga. The clashing views of Zeke and Armin are so interesting to me and even though they have completly different views on the meaning of life I can relate to both. It's easy to say that the meaning of life is those little things we do everday but I can't help feeling that our life is meaningless in a grand scheme of things. That existential crisis of Zeke is in everyone at least once in their life, especially for people who are sick and know that they're going to die soon or when we've had a really really bad time. I kinda disappointed watching most of reactors with scene, most of them get confused by Zeke's view and say that he's talking nonsense, maybe because that feeling of being so little and unimportant in this universe has never happened to them yet

Great video. I love this scene so much, so it's nice to see it get some recognition. Armin and Zeke are both top 5 AOT characters imo, and I think this scene represents the true core message of AOT. Cemented Zeke and Armin as legendary characters for me.

this scene is basically isayama telling what TRUE FREEDOM IS

  • @nmikk10
    @nmikk10 Месяц назад +8

One of my favorites too. Armin essentially becomes the main character of aot in season 4 because he embodies an idea that Isayama wanted Eren to seem as if he embodied pre season 4 before learning the truth.
Armin is able to appreciate life for its hardships and pleasantries because he seeks to explore it. Eren’s reasoning for exploring the world beyond the walls is to take back what he believes is his own through violence, not for the beauty of nature. Eren uses the “I was born into this world” line a lot because he believes people innately have freedom as soon as they’re born. When other people take that away from him, he fights to take it back. Thus, Eren can’t ever understand the beauty of life because he doesn’t care about it. The world is cruel to him, not beautiful. Eren wants a better world but not for the sake of life. Eren never appreciated those small moments in life which is the exact opposite of what isayama wants people to do.
Zeke finally understands this only when he realizes that the only fun he ever had was just enjoying a moment. Armin wants to fight to preserve those moments for others so that other people in the future don’t have to go through what Eren or Ymir did.

I just finished rewatching attack on titan for the 10th time probably last night, I watched it with my gf and I mentioned to her how genius the writing was to me for this scene. Zeke talking about what is even the point of living if in the end is death anyways (I’m 31 and I’ve heard many people say something like this throughout my life), when armin talks about how something so simple as racing his friends brought him such joy; zeke thinks about how much he loved just playing catch- something so simple and others couldn’t relate but to HIM he would like to be born again if he could experience that again. This story has a special place in my heart and as a manga reader for 10 years, the experience waiting month to month and speculating with the community what would happen next was such a good time.

He just never had a chance to grow up normal, in the final few chapters of the manga really emphasize how much pain he had in his heart.

you forgot to mention one of the most interesting metaphorical visuals in this scene which makes it even more interesting and fascinating which is the SandCastle Zeke was building.
a sand castle is something u make with a lot of effort, hard work, dedication, design, time, energy to make it look like how you want it to look like and you build it with or without external tools; but one wave of the sea that rolls in too deep can destroy it all at once. it is fragile. this is also what life is. it is the accumulation of all these aspects to make the best version of yourself, but it can also be lost in one swish move. be grateful.

Always thought it's underrated how effectively Zeke finnessed the entirity of Marleys military. The crazy thing about that was he was doing that for his percieved 'good' of all the other eldians, including those on Marley that he had fooled. The only thing I didn't like about the writing of Zekes character is how his titan is portrayed as only being able to throw shit. When he was in that giant forest with Levi he could have easily broken off a giant branch from one of those trees and swing it around like a baseball bat. The way they pigeonholed the beast titan into 'if he doesn't have shit to throw he's kind of useless' was a bit one dimensional for how quality the writing in aot is.

And in S4 we get introduced to these actual deep philosphical movements we have in the real world. S1-3 is just much more subtle in its messaging.

@@HabkeineAngst This scene basically embodies almost everything wrong with the series ending, and while the Ymir/Mikasa scene is poor writing and comes from nowhere (and the message is so morally horrific it makes me genuinely disgusted by an author I loved), i still don’t think it’s as bad as this one. The other option for worst scene is the whole “thank you for becoming a mass murderer for our sake” scene, which is definitely worse but I heard they rewrote it for the anime so I won’t count it.
      The scene is bad because,
-Zeke has Royal blood, meaning Ymir should listen to his orders, but Eren convinced her to follow him instead, so killing Zeke shouldn’t stop anything
-Zeke has a spontaneous character arc forced upon him in a single chapter, making his whole character do a 180* from a three minute chat
-Zeke already had a better direction for him to go- he should’ve been trying to fight because Grisha asked him too, not become depressed then spontaneously bust out in Disney songs before committing suicide
-where’d the leaf/ball come from? Why does it work like that?
-apparently Armin can conveniently talk to the dead Titan users, who can conveniently take over Ymir’s Titan puppets because they look like the titans they used to have ig?? and Armin can conveniently convince them all to do this in less time than it took to make Zeke 180*. None of this is established, built up, or even foreshadowed in any way until it happens. I’d call it a deus ex machina but it’s worse than that- it’d be like in Star Wars right before being zapped by Sidieus, Luke waves his hands and an army of zombie Jedi magically appear and save the day, then are promptly never mentioned again after the fight
