This sermon is a BIG DEAL. Why? Because it is about what we must do to be saved. Must we only be justified - with this always leading to our being sanctified - or should we instead speak and live as if sanctification is a CONDITION of salvation? Are the two theoretically and practically the same? Christianity has two dimensions: 1. Christ died and rose for us 2. We must die and rise with Christ The first is justification - the second is sanctification. While number 1 - receiving the grace that is Christ's death and resurrection - is generally accepted to be shown in scripture as a condition for salvation - Romans 8:13 (a verse focused on in John Piper's sermon) shows that number 2 is ALSO a CONDITION of salvation. Verse 13 says that IF we put to death the deeds of the body (if we die and rise with Christ) - we will live - we will be saved. It is an IF statement - an IF statement is a condition. All IF statements imply that when the condition A is complied with there will be a consequence B. So of course verse 13 - as long as it is an IF statement - a condition - will also ALWAYS imply (if we think of justification as A and sanctification as B) in this case that A is the inevitable consequence of B - or in the case of salvation - a NECESSARY SIGN of B. It implies that B truly received/obeyed - IS A. How then does John Piper respond to the CONDITION that is verse 13? He does by pointing out only that there is an inevitable consequence. Is it the inevitable consequence I explained that must exist in any IF statement? No - instead of concluding what verse 13 clearly states - that B leads to A - John Piper concludes ONLY that the verse proves that A leads to B (justification always leads to sanctification). Why does he do this? He does so as part of making verse 13 fit with his view that verse 30 is about eternal security. While I am not here to disagree that A always leads to B - in addition to B always leading to A (I am not going to divert to prove this) I am here to point out that the only reason why John isn't receiving the verse either as a condition - or an inevitable consequence in the direction it is expressed - is to make verse 13 align with verse 30 (which he says is about eternal security). (I cannot see why verse 30 - which exists in a bible - not on its own - proves eternal security - but I digress). But if sanctification is always the consequence of being truly justified - if A always leads to B - does it matter if the preacher ignores the fact that the verse is a condition? How about this for a reason why it matters? It matters because if unconditional election is correct doctrine there would be no reason to express sanctification as a condition of salvation - as happens in verse 13. Because it wouldn't be a condition. The verse MUST therefore be interpreted to mean that ANYONE is able to choose to imitate Christ through faith - leading to their being saved (instead of most people being created only for eternal punishment). It means that unconditional election is wrong doctrine - which means that Calvinism's TULIP doctrines all fall. The IF statement that is verse 13 couldn't matter more! In case anyone believes that John Piper is able to treat verse 13 as if it isn't a condition - when it clearly is - here is a second proof (verse 13 being one) that unconditional election is wrong doctrine: 2 Peter 1:10 ESV Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. The Calvinist elect NEVER fall. The Calvinist non-elect ALWAYS fall. Therefore - since this passage refers to a group of people that Calvinism cannot recognise - election must be conditional - conditional upon the obedience referred to in Romans 8:13 - this possible only through faith. Note that the following verse - verse 11 - prevents us from interpreting the falling in verse 10 as being falling in some way less than losing our salvation: v11 ESV For IN THIS WAY there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

True, it appears that Pastor Piper doesn’t have much personal experience with exorcisms. (I Googled only.) He might be more of a teacher, aiming to mature the Church. This sermon is a BIG DEAL. Why? Because it is about what we must do to be saved.
Must we only be justified - with this always leading to our being sanctified - or should we instead speak and live as if sanctification is a CONDITION of salvation? Are the two theoretically and practically the same?
Christianity has two dimensions:
1. Christ died and rose for us
2. We must die and rise with Christ
The first is justification - the second is sanctification.
While number 1 - receiving the grace that is Christ's death and resurrection - is generally accepted to be shown in scripture as a condition for salvation - Romans 8:13 (a verse focused on in John Piper's sermon) shows that number 2 is ALSO a CONDITION of salvation.
Verse 13 says that IF we put to death the deeds of the body (if we die and rise with Christ) - we will live - we will be saved. It is an IF statement - an IF statement is a condition. All IF statements imply that when the condition A is complied with there will be a consequence B. So of course verse 13 - as long as it is an IF statement - a condition - will also ALWAYS imply (if we think of justification as A and sanctification as B) in this case that A is the inevitable consequence of B - or in the case of salvation - a NECESSARY SIGN of B. It implies that B truly received/obeyed - IS A.
How then does John Piper respond to the CONDITION that is verse 13? He does by pointing out only that there is an inevitable consequence. Is it the inevitable consequence I explained that must exist in any IF statement? No - instead of concluding what verse 13 clearly states - that B leads to A - John Piper concludes ONLY that the verse proves that A leads to B (justification always leads to sanctification).
Why does he do this? He does so as part of making verse 13 fit with his view that verse 30 is about eternal security. While I am not here to disagree that A always leads to B - in addition to B always leading to A (I am not going to divert to prove this) I am here to point out that the only reason why John isn't receiving the verse either as a condition - or an inevitable consequence in the direction it is expressed - is to make verse 13 align with verse 30 (which he says is about eternal security). (I cannot see why verse 30 - which exists in a bible - not on its own - proves eternal security - but I digress).
But if sanctification is always the consequence of being truly justified - if A always leads to B - does it matter if the preacher ignores the fact that the verse is a condition? How about this for a reason why it matters? It matters because if unconditional election is correct doctrine there would be no reason to express sanctification as a condition of salvation - as happens in verse 13. Because it wouldn't be a condition. The verse MUST therefore be interpreted to mean that ANYONE is able to choose to imitate Christ through faith - leading to their being saved (instead of most people being created only for eternal punishment). It means that unconditional election is wrong doctrine - which means that Calvinism's TULIP doctrines all fall.
The IF statement that is verse 13 couldn't matter more!
In case anyone believes that John Piper is able to treat verse 13 as if it isn't a condition - when it clearly is - here is a second proof (verse 13 being one) that unconditional election is wrong doctrine:
2 Peter 1:10 ESV
Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
The Calvinist elect NEVER fall.
The Calvinist non-elect ALWAYS fall.
Therefore - since this passage refers to a group of people that Calvinism cannot recognise - election must be conditional - conditional upon the obedience referred to in Romans 8:13 - this possible only through faith. Note that the following verse - verse 11 - prevents us from interpreting the falling in verse 10 as being falling in some way less than losing our salvation:

For IN THIS WAY there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I am shocked to find that Pastor Piper does not know anything about exorcism at his age and with his knowledge....concerning so many other things. According to The Bible many have this affliction and most do not even know it! Churches do not want anything to do with it either which is extremely negligent. People are not being ministered to like they should be by figurehead people of the church yet they call themselves Pastors and preachers and ministers. These "teachers" are held to a higher standard and will be held accountable for not ministering to the sheepfold as they should have been. Truly sad......

True, it appears that Pastor Piper doesn’t have much personal experience with exorcisms. (I Googled only.) He might be more of a teacher, aiming to mature the Church. I would think he has knowledge about it and I would disagree about you stating he doesn’t know anything.
I think there are various pastors out there that sort of specialized in different areas, but are of the same “body”. I think Pastor Piper aims to do his part. I wouldn’t discount him as a Pastor for this.
I don’t regularly listen to Pastor Piper’s teaching, but I do respect much of what I’ve heard from him thus far…

@desiringGod What is funny is that John tells us in other videos that He is a sinner and that he does not believe a person can be sinless. So it is crazy funny for him to talk about a sinner trying to heal a sinner. A sinner trying to cast out a demon. Sinners and demons play for the same team.
So John, listen up. If you believe that the bible is the inspired word of God then that means that paul and the other apostles who wrote the bible had to know God and understand Him. So 1john3:6 tells us that sinners dont know God or understand Him. Since Paul and the others are able to teach us about God that means they were not sinners.
So because you believe the Bible , you are wrong. Because you are a sinner, God is telling everyone not to listen to you because you dont know Him or understand Him.

You don’t understand the difference between justification and sanctification. We are justified by the blood of Christ! That is why we are saints! By what Christ has done on our behalf , after we are justified, sanctification starts! That’s Christ changing us into what he says we are within justification. Sanctification takes a life time. This is why Christians still commit sins. Read Roman’s 7 on Pauls struggles sanctification
