TOTALLY 💯 per cent agree with you Geoff Osborne. Petula Clark is undoubtedly the BEST female vocalist of all time. As a lifelong fan of Petula's I may be biased but I also tell the truth.
I heard the original Salior (my home is the sea) by Lolita in the US in the early 1960s. Petula Clark's english version is awesome too! I finally got to hear the lyrics of Salior in English to understand what they meant. Petula Clark also has French version of Salior that was hit in France. When Downtown went number one on the charts in during the British Invasion my sister bought her album I also became a fan Petula Clark still have a few of her songs on 45s including Downtown and her greatest hits album.
One of those songs that has always been in the background of my growing up (school in 1961). I rediscovered it whilst idly watching yourtube many years ago. Fell in love with it then, especially this version: ruclips.net/video/ERy5sp3-jf0/видео.html The pictures are especially poignant. One can imagine a sailor out at sea, roaming around those places (Capri, Amsterdam, Honolulu or Siam) as the pictures show. great shots of the early British Fleet Air Arm too.' Then I found this version. Well restored! Good colour too. Pet could really sing ay!
