New theory: maybe the ARC is programmed to search the general vicinity of any microphone noise that goes into the system, but isn't loud enough to trigger a rise in your mic volume on the indicator, without being allowed to go directly to you. Because sometimes it is far enough away that I don't think it's just programmed to stay nearby
