Given this was the mid 70s, he shook things up alot with regards to class layout (ie getting rid of the desks)and teaching structure. e did for science a module on Astronomy and a friend and myself built a 9-10 foot tall Saturn 5. From then on I've had a love of the Stars and the men & women who got us there. Unfortunately Being born in '66 while I around for moon landings I was to young to remember them.

Huge diagrams of engine blocks and tools created by previous students were posted high up on the walls around the classroom as inspiration, since the end of the curriculum was CAD on the computer, but you had to master all the hand-drawn practice and discipline before going to the computers. He also required all students to halt work for one week near the end of the school year in May to deliver his "How to Find, Get, Keep, and Quit a Job" presentation where he empowered students to join the workforce. I took his class as a junior, then loved it so much I took double periods of it for my senior year.
I am 22 and I met Carl Sagan long after he had already passed away on the internet here in Brazil. I am so delightful for having the opportunity to come across him on the internet and also to have watched his worldwide known serie cosmos and have dived into his books. He was the best educator I've ever "had" because he was the first one that I noticed that teaches how to reckon, how important it is to be skeptical in every field in our lives, respectfully applying the scientific method along with it, which is the same by the way. Carl lives on in our beings, in those who were influenced by him, in those in which somehow were induced to THINK. That's the most important thing.

Neil is underrated as an actor/showman. He can go from being this chill guy on the podcast to being an enthusiastic, entertaining host/guest when he wants.
I don't want to be too zealous, but every sentence has it purpose and is so well aligned, the built up, the voice, the hypnotizing rocking and the slow blinking, he is truly an amazing story teller and this wonderful gentle force of inspiration.

That is my concept of Multiverse or maybe different Dimensions. That chance meeting between the 2 of you in that time certainly changed your Life. Who knows what may have transpired if that Event had not happened. These other Multiverses are here right next to us. Your path down that road changed everything. For you as well as for us. I loved watching his "Cosmos" shows. I am still fascinated with all things Space, as well as Physicists or anyone else Teaching us about our "World.

What a story! What a story!!! Loved it! Carl Sagan's tv show "Cosmos" was my favorite tv show in 80's. He was a great teacher and scientist for sure. Happy Birthday, Neil! Wow! What a lovely coincidence the posting of this video... last night I was watching Carl's last known TV appearance interviewed by Charlie Rose. They were talking about his book "The Demon Haunted World". Carl, with only months to live, never faltered, never swayed from what he always believed. He communicated with a sense of urgency the dangers of not being scientifically literate... not much has changed from 1996 in that sense, IMHO. Keep the torch burning, Neil! There are people I have admired in my life. I never got to meet them, but Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, Carl Sagan, David Attenborough, Issaac Asimov, Allan Turing, and Admiral Grace Hopper. I have spent time working in a military library, and processing medical records. I used to help my mom with her continuing education to keep her nursing license up to date, so that came in handy. I also got to help one of my high school teachers with his continuing education in computer programming, and I got an independent study credit for that. That was back in 1980. Computer science back then was very different than it is now. Edit: The teacher I helped was my favorite teacher. Mr. Keeler taught me Algebra, Geometry, and high school Physics. I was also his teacher's aide.

Sadly, when Carl Sagan passed away, I was looking in his window and didn't know it. I lived across the lake here in Seattle when he left us and my windows were facing his room. He was my idol and I was crushed. I wish I could've met him. (Cosmos changed my life forever.) Fortunately I did get to meet Neil here a few years back and he was every but as warm as you'd imagine.

Happy Birthday! That is an awesome story, I really enjoyed that. One thing I've wondered just about every time I watch StarTalk is how did Neil and Chuck get together for Startalk? If it hasn't happened yet, maybe a future episode explaining this?
Sadly, when Carl Sagan passed away, I was looking in his window and didn't know it. I lived across the lake here in Seattle when he left us and my windows were facing his room. He was my idol and I was crushed. I wish I could've met him. (Cosmos changed my life forever.)
Fortunately I did get to meet Neil here a few years back and he was every but as warm as you'd imagine.
Happy Birthday Neil... we are about the same age. I was born in 1957 (november 6), the year of the Sputnik, right? I always am happy to say that, because it started one of the greatest adventures for humankind... exploration of space, gsm and so many more.... Hope to see many years more of your content. I had many teachers in my life. There are no favorites that I recall. My mother would probably be my favorite teacher. Just simple things she would say, guided me through life.

Happy Birthday Neil! The only person I consider a hero of mine! Including your most recent book 'Starry Messenger' I now own 9 of your books. Thankyou for providing me with a literacy of scientific knowledge I didn't have prior to the age of 30. I'm now 35. This knowledge was especially valuable during the pandemic. I got myself vaccinated and my 2 kids. They also are scientifically literate because I am. Thankyou again!!

That was a great story a fourth grade teacher named Mr Greeley he was my favorite teacher he's the one that got me in the music and who's the only good teacher I had but a man I will cherish forever even though he passed in his classroom teaching a few years after 4th grade for me
