  • Spotlight on mix of animal species that visitors often miss but which are present nevertheless!
    * MARKHOR schroefhoorngeiten / screw-horn goats. Natural habitat south and central Asia and the Himalayas.
Just over one year ago, twin brothers Max and Marius were placed in the former enclosure of the capricorns, together with 3rd male Mico. The twins bullied Mico, so a 4th markhor, named Mill, was introduced to make it a more even competition. These animals show their incredible climbing skills on the rock formations.
    * A CHINESE MUNTJAC joined the TAPIRS a while ago. Muntjacs are native to south-eastern China and Taiwan but were introduced to the U.K. in the late 19th century and in Belgium and the Netherlands. They prefer forests and shrublands. Because of their barking sound, muntjacs are also called barking deer.
    * VOSMANGOESTEN /YELLOW MONGOOSE, the bigger cousins of meerkats. They all share their natural habitat in southern Africa and their behaviour, breeding and housing is also similar.
    * KNOBBELZWIJNEN / WARTHOGS. Native in the sub-Sahara area, Africa.
Male warthog Bobotie got the company of female Nala and since May they are exploring the enclosure of the giraffes together with their 2 male babies Zulu and Zoan.
    * the OKAPIS are sharing their enclosure with a RED FOREST DUIKER, a small antelope, native to Central and Southern Africa.
    * The BONGOS are sharing their enclosure with KIRKS DIKDIKS, also small antelopes. Billy & Bertha had a baby recently, and it comes out of the stable to eat some greens already. Dikdiks are native to the south-east African savannah.
    * GOODFELLOW'S boomkangoeroe / tree kangaroo Wako. Native to the rainforest of New Guinea. Look at his long tail!
    * BEVERRAT / NUTRIA. Native to subtropic and moderate South America. These rodents live in burrows alongside stretches of water and feed on plant stems.
The advantage of being early in the Zoo is that there aren't many visitors yet, so l didn't have to add music to cover their noises and just got the volume down.

I've never heard of some of these species lol. They look cute and happy. I loved the giraffe looking at the warthogs. I used to live in a townhouse-style apartment right near a creek that had nutria. So yes, they're also in Oregon, US. Thanks for sharing! 🤗☺️

@emilyinoregon6967 That was what l meant to do : showing not so commonly known animals.
I had to look at the name of the species on the information board myself! 😉😅
I've been recording these here and there since last year, every time some of them were appearing or in action. Particularly, the small deer didn't do that regularly. First time ever l saw the muntjac, but it's not there for a long time already. I was at the zoo early, and a zookeeper had just put the greens down and it suddenly appeared. The tapir just got out of sight indoors. Otherwise, l had taken a photo of it too.
Indeed, the nutria are spread in North America and even got 'imported' in Europe.
Thank you for your comment, Emily. 😀👍

The yellow mongoose on watch duty looks just like Mia when she does the same thing

@tracilay4162 It does look the same! Meerkats stand in a similar pose too.
So this must be the absolutely correct pose for being on watch duty! 😉😄
Thank you for your comment, Traci. 😀👍
