There is not sure way to exclude other wildlife from the box, but following the instructions in the guide closely is the best chance. The size of the gaps are wide enough for bats, but not so wide as to invite other species like squirrels or wasps. The use of solid wood will hopefully discourage chewing by squirrels as is commonly seen in plywood.
Isn’t stain considered toxic ? VOCs off gas for quite awhile and I think the small enclosed spaces will concentrate the fumes . I suggest burning the outside of the box to darken and preserve.

my arborist friend says don't nail or screw into trees, not even for tree ID tags. Is there another way to attach the bat box?
