Outside of the U.S., Thin Lizzy are remembered as an all time great band. In the States, they're just the guys that did "The Boys Are Back In Town." But those of us that know... We know.
And Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed might be their best track.

Grandmaster Flash was a Thin Lizzy fan, He sampled Johnny the Fox. Brian Downey is simply one of Rock's best drummers, and no one had better vocal phrasing than Phil Lynott.

Problem was when Lizzy started a US tour in 70’s, Lynott came down with Hepatitis. Next shot at it, Robertson cut his hand in a bar fight the night before leaving for a US tour. Gary Moore sat in for Robbo but that chemistry wasn’t there. Two massive blows to Lizzy in America.

Takes me back to my early childhood in the 1970s, my dad and his girlfriend were hippies back then. The Boys Are Back In Town is one of their biggest hits.
One of the best comebacks I ever heard in Rock & Roll; A reporter asked guitarist/singer Phil Lynott "What's it like being black in Ireland?"
Phil replied "Like a pint o' Guinness, mate."

Other great songs "Bad Reputation" from the album 'Bad Reputation', "Warriors" and "Don't Believe A Word"(go with versions from the live album 'Live And Dangerous'. thank you Lance, I've had this album since I was 13/14 and still play it today and I'm 59! You could've picked any track off this album - johnny or rocky - the guitar breaks are mind blowing especially for a guy (brian robertson) who was only 20 years old at the time! this album is thin lizzy's finest 35minutes and 37seconds! The whole band is amazing - drummer, twin guitars and the mighty phil lynott. this band had a number of guitarists, but this was by a 'country mile' the best line-up - brian robertson and scott gorham.

Whiskey in the Jar - What you mean is it's more authentic and closer to the roots of the the song. You might say metallics's cover is that kind of cultural appropriation that works within the rock genre but they weren't tuned into the source that Thin Lizzy were connected to. It's an old folk tune.

Great choice- Thin Lizzy ( A Irish Rock band from the 70’s)was such a great band!! They had commercial success with songs like- Jailbreak, The Boys Are back in Town - as I’m typing my you’re playing my favorite, Whiskey in a Jar!! You are reading my mind😃 Whiskey in a Jar is a very old Irish Folk song.

Interesting! Thin Lizzy are by far my favorite band. Got the "Jailbreak" album cover art tattooed on my upper left arm! To me, that album was such a leap forward in production. A must listen with HEADPHONES on, all the varied tracks. Their diversity is what makes them so damn good. 😄
If I'm going to introduce someone to Thin Lizzy, I start with these 4 songs off 'Live & Dangerous'. "Dancin' In The Moonlight" (Pop) followed by "Massacre" (Metal?). Then come the most gut wrenching love song ever, "Still In Love With You" (Blues) and finishing up with "Johnny The Fox Meets..." (Funk).
These are only FOUR songs out of their entire catalog but they showcase the diversity of the band so well that, well... If you can't find one of these songs to love, we can't be friends!! 😆
P.S. Seriously, let the CD ride thru the next set of tracks ending with "Are You Ready" and you'll be hooked. POWERFUL stuff!!

So glad you enjoyed Thin Lizzy, you are right they put a lot of emotion In their songs. They also have a very varied reportoire. I like one of their early tracks Chatting Today.

Note: Whiskey in the Jar doesnt have any bass guitar and still rocks! I'll throw another vote towards "Massacre" or my favorite: "Dont Believe A Word". I cant tell you why I like that song , I just do. Today is Phil Lynott's birthday, RIP dude.
I just stumbled here looking for Thin Lizzy. So glad you enjoyed them. They were very influential... which is why everyone sounds like them. Phil even tried some punk [the Greedy Bastards/the Greedies was a side project for punk fun!] Tragic loss.

Whiskey in The Jar is a traditional Irish folk song, this is one of my favorite versions. There are so many Thin Lizzy songs that you could review. How about Bad Reputation, as someone requested before me.

Whiskey in a jar is actually an old Irish drinking shanty that's hundreds of years old. It has had a few other names, and the old pub versions can be found on RUclips. Although the sound quality tends to be a little rough. I think Cork and Kerry might be one of the other names it goes by - maybe one o yous guys can help me out. Personally, I like the rock/metal versions best but it's interesting to hear the older ones.
