  • Designing an electric system requires more than just spinning a propeller. Much of an electric boat focuses around safety and emergency planning. This article covers several key decisions to design an electric system that delivers far more than propulsion. Instead, our electric system ensures reliable safety.

    In terms of safety for yachts, something that you didn't mention is that electric propulsion (mostly) always works, whereas it's far too common on a sailing yacht that your diesel or gas engine leaves you hanging dry when the conditions get tough, you want to drop your sails and start the engine. Lo and behold, that's exactly when dirt in the fuel tanks decides to clog your lines and just when you needed it, your propulsion system is unusable. Electric propulsion on the other hand will just start and run. If you have a series hybrid setup and your genset isn't starting, you have time to fix it. You can run on the battery while debugging your genset. And because the diesel engine of your genset doesn't need to be in a weird location (unlike a diesel engine that must be coupled to your propeller shaft) you can debug your genset in a much more comfortable position, usually.
    Decoupling these failure modes is a huge advantage in my opinion.

      Exactly. There are so many benefits that you don't realize until you live with EP for a bit. Nobody would ever want to go back.
      Just did the math on CATL's new LFP batteries which will be in production next year. 255 wh/kg. A 10kwh pack would weigh only 86lb. Still nowhere near the energy density of diesel of course, but its getting exciting.

    i have a question regarding hybrid propulsion. I know you can have a setup 'in series' or in 'parallel ' What are the pro's and cons for each?

      I have a video for this coming out in a few months. You can also read an article about that here:
      www.hybrid-marine.co.uk/index.php/hybrid-info/which-hybrid-is-best
      But here is the 30 second explanation.
      Series Hybrid:
      1. Larger electrical equipment, since everything needs to be sized for full power.
      2. More flexibility for layout on boat. You don't need to stay in line with propeller shaft.
      3. Ability to use a smaller generator.
      Parallel Hybrid:
      1. Smaller electrical equipment, sized for only partial power.
      2. Can combine electric and engine for higher power output.
      3. Requires a complicated gearbox with control system.
      4. Many more options for different usage scenarios. You can combine the engine, electric motor, and propeller to achieve different tasks:
      Electric only propulsion, engine only propulsion, combined electric + engine propulsion, electric generator for hotel loads, electric regeneration from propeller, use engine for combined propulsion and generator for hotel loads.

    Nice to see this covered! You forgot to mention regen as another input. Only on a sailboat of course. Pretty much any electric motor can regen. 5-6 knots can power hotel loads. 7 knots and up things start to get exciting.
    The minimum power chart was using the standard HP - KW conversion. You cant go wrong sizing that way, but its generally overkill. In real word use an electric KW rating can replace a diesel with 2 or even 3 times the HP.
    Electric boats are what I do. Happy to talk to anyone anytime.

    The realities and practicalities of safety is always a good point to hammer home but electric hybrid options are really quite diverse thought you really only brushed over it ....... considered thought needs to be given to so many aspects of a design, which ultimately have a bearing on a vessels safety, such as;
    - Parallel hybrid (in-line and offset), rather than just Series (in my mind this is a much better solution than Series hybrid)
    - Battery technology
    - Recharge capacity options - mains power from dock, main engine from high output alternators, size of solar array, generator
    - Fuel type for generator - Methanol fuel cell? Think I might have considered unleaded, LPG, and even hydrogen cell before methanol.
    - Regenerative power potential - this can effect your choice of hotel load storage
    - And risks and cons .... fire, cost, lightning strike, harsh environment, high tech
    And I think it’s important to explain the difference in horsepower requirements for the main propulsion units - a 30 kw diesel propulsion engine can be compatible to a 15 kw electric motor (just so people don’t look at that graph a think if emergency conditions require this much power (from a contemporary diesel motor) a they have to match the output with the same size electric motor)
    Anyways thought there was a lot left unsaid, huge topic

      Yes. It was too much to say in a single video. Which is why I have a whole series of videos on this topic over the next several months.

    You might find the youtube video "magnetic hydrodynamic submarine propulsion the hunt for red october" As an alternative to propellers and waterjets and sails interesting. With the diesel option you should have two or three for redudancy. Replacing the diesels with gas turbines allows you to use alternative fuels. Thanks for another great video.

    as you know electric boats are older than ICE boats more than 100 years from Echo!

    Do ships not use banks of super caps for storage?

    • @DatawaveMarineSolutions
      @DatawaveMarineSolutions  Год назад +1

      Not yet. There may be one or two demonstration vessels. But I don't know of any wide scale super capacitor implementations. Emergency safety is one of the biggest challenges for introducing new equipment on a ship. For the case of a supercapacitor, we need to first prove that they won't catch fire or act as fuel to a fire that starts somewhere else in the engine room.

    My take-away from these videos on EV yachts is that it is not that practical, even with high the efficiency of electric motors as seen in the graph.
