What a collaboration - I didn't expect my two favourite design RUclipsrs to suddenly bless the internet like this!
Reminds me of the Artifexian - Jan Misali collaboration
What a collab! Very unexpected, as was the shout out at the start 🙏 I’m very honoured to have played a tiny part in you making your fantastic channel, as you know I’m a big fan. Congrats again!
Cheers Rohin, appreciate it mate - I have to say one of the highlights of getting on youtube has been connecting with other creators whose work I admire and enjoy!
my 2 favorite youtubers who focus on "niche" topics in one video!! dream come true for the new year!! tantacrul was actually how i discovered you! i believe he posted about you either on twitter or discord about your microsoft font video and ive never been so grateful for a recommendation before! i was instantly hooked. congrats on hitting such a huge milestone!
Thank you kindly, and yes, Martin's been very supportive of the channel from early days :)
Congratulations on your success! Loved that you made this a collab with another of my favourite expert youtubers.
The comments about the face though... I think the videos would be less than they are if they didn't have the talking face footage. We get to see you smile about the fun parts, etc.
It boggles my mind that people who apparently like your videos enough to watch them, felt it was helpful to hate on your actual face. Keep it up!
Haha cheers mate! I mean I'm no Harry Styles but I would hope I don't own the least watchable face on RUclips.
@@LinusBoman I don't know if it's the same for you, but I find it's always prefixed with "love your videos, but I really have to say...". Really, it's best to stop reading after you hit those words. It's up there with "I'm not racist, but..."
@@AtomicShrimp @LinusBoman I'm deaf and I actually like seeing faces cos I'm reading the facial expression and lipreading as well as watching the captions (except when either RUclips or maybe my creaking desktop PC get the video and sound out of sync).
for the record, struggling with using Google Earth to animate videos has one of my video essays stuck in project hell. I have huge respect for Jon Bois and Bobby Broccoli for getting as efficient as they both are at it.
Admittedly, Bobby Broccoli switched over to Blender.
@@bb010g aye, and i don't blame him, google earth was absolutely not designed for motion graphics lmao
Just a note, the method that Bobby Broccoli uses is similar to Jon Bois and his incredible work for SB Nation. Jon Bois is the person who created the google earth storytelling thing and the stuff that he has made for Dorktown and Chart Party are some of the best content on RUclips.
Martin's eyeshadow is fantastic
Can you believe it's actually like that all the time? I'm dead pale and I've dark circles under my eyes since I was around 13. Pity me.
My two favourite design channels! Congrats on 100k!
Cheers!
There are only 86 comments, but the comment section is PACKED with some big RUclips names. Well done Linus!
I love how you both got pinkish color accents in your facecames ^^
Whoa, I couldn't have asked for a better collaboration! I've loved Tantacrul for years, and I really appreciate the commentary on behind the scenes of how you go through recording and making dense, unique scripts that hold up so well. I try to be a good presenter when I need to, but it's so nice to hear other perspectives on presenting and on life balance.
Great video guys. Mentioning Bobbybroccoli was just a cherry on top, love his editing style a lot.
Thank you so much for the subtitles! As a non-native speaker I wouldn't have understood that you said "naval-gazing" without the subtitles, so thank you very much :)
Two of my favorite RUclipsrs, favorite non-science-explainers, and two of the people that could upload a 3-hour video of an uncommented campfire and I'd still watch it. Thank you, Tantacrul and Linus for doing what you do.
To touch on it, that Google Earth style by Bobby Broccoli was openly influenced by Jon Bois, another utterly excellent video essayist kinda person focused in the sports field (pun not intended), though you really don't need to know anything about sports to enjoy Bois
That's cool, might need to look him up!
@@LinusBoman Jon Bois is the creative director at SB nation, so a lot of the newer stuff he's worked on is on their RUclips channel Secret Base. I'd also check out his online-mixed-media(?) fiction story called 17776, which I found amazing even tho I don't know or care much about american football lol.
Thank you for telling how after every video you get some comment that makes you think "I wish I had included this"! I'm feeling less alone now in this struggle.
לא ציפיתי לראות אותך פה! היי :) הלוואי שהערוץ שלך יגדל ויצליח עוד
Been here since the second London boroughs video and it's been great! Thanks for interesting videos!
Being a fan of both channels, this video was awesome, wholesome, and the shout out to BobbyBroccoli was great, have binged that channel a few weeks ago, Not everyone is made for RUclips or A/V media, but those who dare and have the creds to back it up or that out of the box spin that makes it funny, or the patience for endless research, are the reason i love having YT premium and do consume media and am aware of it. Congrats linus on the 100K!
Too kind Tarek, thanks mate!
Hot damn that's not a collaboration I sas coming. A surprise, but a welcome one.
this is one of the crossovers ever.
@@te.legrammeLinusBoman shut up bot
Tantacrul is one of my heroes. When I discovered this video on your channel while watching my first video of yours (the clip art one), I knew you were cool, too.
This video is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you 👏
I’m a new dad who has been contemplating a niche channel for a while - Accessibility + TTRPG games + Web Design.
I kept telling myself it’s too niche of a topic and that I wouldn’t have time between my day-job and dad duties. Y’all are both an inspiration!
So grateful that I stumbled across this channel via your Sphere collab with @standupmaths
I love the conversation about about research! One of the things I would like to add to the IRL research is that, if doing a video on historical topics, consider looking for archives! There's a lot of material, both for research as well as visual aids, that would be excellent additions to videos but often they aren't digitized while they could be INCREDIBLE for a visual medium like youtube. Archives hold huge swathes of materials that people aren't really aware of, but many have easily accessible finding aids that can point to potentially exciting documents. Just look at Ray Mona's documentary on finding the lost Saban Moon at the Library of Congress as a prime example of what could be undiscovered in an archive.
Been wanting to get into video essays (more as a hobby than a career), and I just realized my debut video essay was literally the thing that Tantacrul warned about at 18:05 ! To be fair, it was literally a last minute school project, but I still felt extremely called out lmao. But still, a very eye opening video from two of my favorite RUclipsrs. I'll try not to fall into similar traps in the future.
WOAH my two favorite design RUclipsrs in one video?! This is awesome
Wow, as a fan of both of your channels for a while I didn’t expect a collab! What great surprise!
dream team. loved the Bobby B shoutout
Congratulations Linus, easily well-deserved. Professional and insightful from day one. Huge fan of yourself and Martin.
Too kind, thanks mate.
I was in the middle of rewatching the MuseScore 4 vid when this popped up. Love this collab
Tantacrul & Linus! Awesome! 🙌
What a great pear up for a special
Haha, cheers mate
Actually, I really like having only your face there, because I like to only listen to videos, so that I can craft at the same time. I deliberate search out interesting videos where I can listen only, and feel like I am not missing out on anything. When I do glance at the screen every now and then, I do enjoy your pleasant face and your expressions.
Great! What Martin describes around 13 minutes in is the same method I use for writing poetry. Sound is key! 👍🏻
Congrats on 100k!! Love your stuff, excited to see what you make going forward :)
Congrats on 100k subscribers!! Well deserved 🎉
On the point about listening to your own voice, honestly its hard at first but it's something you can get used to just by doing it a bunch. I used to be terrified but I got into streaming and enjoyed it enough that over time I naturally developed somewhat of my own voice and though I don't love the sound of it, I don't let it get in my way either. There's always worse speakers out there and there's always the possibility for improvement.
For what it's worth a non-zero part of why I enjoy this channel is you're pretty easy to listen to, Linus, and I mean that in the best way.
Hey! Not sure if you'll see this but I first watched your vid on Microsoft's typefaces and I'm really impressed by the amount of researfch you put into these vids and the editing as well. You managed to make a topic that initially seemed super boring and made it very entertaining!
congrats on 100k! been watching your videos for a while now, I'm actually thinking of getting into graphic design myself now :)
Congrats on 100k! Thank you so Linus for creating your videos. I binged your whole channel upon discovery just because I haven't seen anything else like it before for design. I really enjoy your niche design content and patiently wait for my notifications to light up when you post. Thanks again and hope your family had a happy new year!
Great stuff man! Love your content and learning about graphic design with all your great research. This was a great watch as a channel that's just getting started :).
Idea for a future episode. Every year the Eurovision Song Contest has a different ident, logo and branding. This year in Liverpool. Would be interesting to see you compare them over the years!
Last year i produced a 34min yraining video for a volunteer organization i was working with. All of these pain points about starting off making YT vids feel way too real.
That bit Martin said about needing to "say" your script a number of times before recodrding, to get that more natural tone really stands out to me. Every time i relisten to that video it just sounds way too "read from a script" and i didnt really have that conversational tone i was aiming for.
The shit is hard.
Congrats! Couldn't think of a more deserving channel!!
Two superb RUclips channels and thanks for the insights
I have since been binge watching all of BobbyBroccoli channel, excellent recommendation!
I just had to share my most annoying comment as a RUclipsr. My channel started when I was diagnosed with kidney failure and given 45 days to live without dialysis. I documented my journey on RUclips to have a record. In my early videos, where I was clinging to life, I get comments that I look sick and should see a doctor. The videos are about me being sick and trying to stay alive. I’ve survived almost 5 years now, written 2 books, and look much healthier and still get those comments on the old videos. I have come to learn that some people disconnect from reality when they write comments, saying things they never would in person. They don’t see creators as real people and don’t realize how inappropriate or cruel some of their comments can be. Luckily these are the minority of comments and most people are positive, helpful, and supportive. Keep up the good videos - I find them very informative and helpful.
I love both your Channels! Glad to see you got 100k subscribers Linus!
Thank you!
I kinda wish tantacrul had pointed out in that video that the genre of the cantina music for star wars is legitimately called "jizz music"
This was a really interesting and worthwhile conversation!
Congratulations on a well-deserved landmark!
Congrats Linus, great work! just hope to keep getting some of it, Wonder if you had or will have something related to animation.
I mean like, getting more and of your great videos, as it's possible within your personal life

at 14:00 you say that if you cringe at hearing your own voice maybe video-making is not for you. I could not agree less, just as with Martin. I pursue a lot of creative stuff, like acting, singing in a choir, and other musicianship, basically I use my voice a lot. I am now a university teacher so now I also use my voice for my real job. When I started gymnasium I studied music and started mixing.
At first, I only mixed other music, but later started mixing the music for one of the bands I sang for. For maybe the first 10 hours of me really listening to my voice, doing mixing I absolutely hated it. With that being said, I learned to like my voice, and also I learned what I sound like and what to change about my voice if I want it to sound the way I want it to. I now have a lot better control of my voice, not only in creative endeavors but also in day-to-day life. My inflections have become better, and I feel a lot better at expressing myself via voice.
So that is all. Have a nice day!
Woo two of my favorite creators 💖
Hi Linus! I have an idea for a video I would LOVE to see you make -
I’ve been living in Europe for about a year now and it just hit me yesterday that all of the National postal service logos in Europe feature the same motif. I see the Norwegian postal logo all of the time and never connected the dots… had an epiphany when I realized it was more than just a circle! I would love to know the story of how this came to be and how different logos symbolize their respective countries. Thanks!
6:02 is basically just the result of Twitter where misunderstandings & bad faith interpretations seem to be a full time job for some people
I would like a video about fonts readability. As a developer it is so hard to find a font that makes clear oO0, Il ... and all those similar looking characters. Plus finding a monospace without looking like 1020 typewriter is even harder ... I think not many graphic designer talk about special letters when it comes to fonts ... Cannonical, google and a few others have specialized fonts for that, but i am curious what your take on these fonts are ... i use Monaco ^_^
Congratulations! Can you make a video about these odd looking Serif fonts often used in Chinese product manuals? They look like a thin Times New Roman with awful kerning, and I always wondered what that is about. Do you know anything about this? I've also seen it with Sans Serif fonts, but not as often, but the kerning is always off. I wonder how this came to be and why it is used so widely.
14:37 “And you can be a different person on camera. It’s not remotely like what you’re like in the real world.”
I always find Linus effortlessly charming and engaging, so, if he’s taking Martin’s advice, well, it’s working.
He's like that in person too, I can attest.
And they said Infinity War was the best crossover in history
gr8 vid m8
congrats!
I did not expect this collab but I'm absolutely here for it.
PS: as much as tantacrul says "filum" there's nothing wrong with it regardless of how bizarre it sounds
He's Irish, and that's very normal here.
Regarding B roll, don't bother unless it adds something substantive. Just using stock footage of a business meeting because you're talking about something businessy gets ridiculous pretty quickly.
Agree! I always assume videos that use a ton of generic stock footage are just podcasts that want to be on a video platform too
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
So, I discovered your channel very recently and liked watching your analyses of fonts. I decided I would write a comment suggesting you analyse the Ubuntu font.
One day later, you make this video with another youtuber I discovered very recently and who exclusively uses Ubuntu in his videos.
Coincidences are strange…
I very much agree with your friend about chaos. As a YT consumer, I loathe the channels that are simply copycats trying to recreate a successful algorithm of style. My goal will be, to be my own person. Bring back the "you" in RUclips.
There will not be a "Dream Desk" or "What's in my camera bag" video on my channel. Be your own person!
Awesome, just what i needed, because im working on some hebrew videos
Dune II, Wolfenstein 3D, Street Fighter 2
lol OF COURSE these two ended up in a collab. Cool.
Could you do a video about the Dutch government branding?

i did not know that tantacrul is a was married to a CBT; interesting

lindo! crush! kingo!
About the comments thing, I remember a youtuber who put out a 2 hours long carefully researched and scripted video essay, and a squirrel appeared in her window at some point and people were just commenting SQUIRREL over and over. I mean, at least she got engagement.
filum
Oh man. I CANNOT escape this comment :D
@@Tantacrul Funnily enough, it’s how I pronounce it too, in my native tongue of glorious Netherlandia.
Can we guess what the most repetitive and annoying comment you'll get on this video will be?
Not sure I quite agree with the 'don't do internet research, go to the library and find a book' point. It seems to imply that authors can do a much better job of researching something than you could. Like, take hbomberguy's recent video on Tommy Tallarico. That's incredibly well researched, but I don't think any of it would have been in a book. But maybe I'm misunderstanding the point.
I saw that video and Harry definitely used a lot of primary sources, they just happen to be mostly online or video based. It's more that he didn't just read second or third hand sources like Wikipedia. It's not really that books are better resources than digital ones, but a lot of what we find online isn't firsthand information or particularly well researched and cited.
@@LinusBoman Plus, if I wanted to have a Wikipedia article read to me (sans citations), I would just open Wikipedia and use a screen reader.
Did tantacrul get his footage ai upscaled or something bc he looks like hes made of plastic
Yes, the video call footage was very poor so it was a tactical choice to go plastic
It's really odd looking. Low light + zoom = plastacrul. I'll know better for next time.
ofc punk isnt dead
two collared shirts? you got one nexk

In terms of comment sections: There is a saying I only know in german, that goes like this "Who and what annoys me actually is still up to me." Meaning, that I am the one who decides if anything annoys me. So If you are annoyed by something, better ask yourself if probably there's some truth to it or it reveals something else. Otherwise, it wouldn't bother you.
It reveals that people who are so pedantic they need to make a correction but not intellectually curious enough to read other people's comments first are annoying. Especially when they converge in the hundreds and thousands.
