    Stay tuned to the end for a couple bloopers :). Share your experience if you've worked on a MX5 Miata Transmission.

    Thanks for this. I have a 2009 RX-8 (similar transmission and seal) which has been giving me fits leaking around the outer body of the seal. This confirms I should have put RTV on it. I'm also working in-car so my workspace is limited. I went ahead and sprung for the special tool from Mazda for driving it so I get it perfectly square.

    Great video! Everything was really clear :), going to have to replace the rear seal on my '00 soon, with the trans on. Hopefully it won't be too big of a pain...

      Hey Edgar! Glad the video was helpful. Yeah we got lucky since we had to remove the engine and transmission for our rebuild and some frame work. Shouldn't be too tricky with the transmission still in though. We hope your seal replacement goes well and thanks for watching!

      @@UnderdogGarage I think the biggest pain will be getting the differential out... It's a tight fit between the chassis bracing and the exhaust

    • @UnderdogGarage
      @UnderdogGarage  4 года назад +1

      Yeah the differential I've heard is tricky. If you can, dropping the exhaust out will give you a lot more room to work, and it's only 2 bolts on one end and 3 at the exhaust manifold I think, so the catalytic converter should drop out easily. I haven't dropped the Miata's differential out yet, but I hear removing the bolts that connect the chassis bracing (I think it's called a power plant frame) to the differential can be tough. I think there's a special trick to it, but I'm not sure what it is.

      @@EddoWagt So how come you had to remove the differential to change the rear transmission seal?

    Forgot to mention that the hole in the seal must be at 6o/clock.

      so i noticed that his hole was at the top. i know the seals say up and down on it. whats the reasoning for it?

    Where can I buy all the transmission seals and gasket in Europe for a RX8? It should be the same as for the MX5 right?

    Great informative video!!!, but a few questions. Did you forget to put in a gasket for the front seal? Is it not required which is why you didn't put in a new one or create one? Also, would a paper gasket that typically comes with a front seal be good enough or would you still be required to create another gasket on top of that one? Thank you, I just discovered that I need to replace the rear seal so this was very helpful, I was going to avoid changing the front seal (felt like I would mess something up), but after watching your video, it seems pretty damn easy. Also its been years since the clutch was changed so.... I probably should do that huh?

      Hey Giovanni,
      Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed. We replaced both gaskets. Both should be replaced when removed I think.
      At 7:09 you'll see the paper gasket is placed on the outer edge of the extension housing and then the main front seal sits inside the extension housing bowl. The paper gasket stuck to the housing with with some residual oil but it may have looked like it wasn't installed. Sorry about that. All the part numbers are listed in the description. I don't think you double up on the gasket when reinstalling.
      Glad to hear the rear main seal replacement part was helpful too. As far as changing the clutch, Depending on mileage and age/wear of clutch it might be good to do. You already have the clutch job halfway done with the transmission out, so might as well knock it out while you're in there. :)
      Hope this helps and good luck wrenching!

    Is this the same process for RX8 front and rear transmission seals?

  • @PouchMaster

    Very informative! So how long do you think it takes a mechanic form start to finish to replace the front and rear seals? Like getting the transmission off the car and all and putting it back on. Just everything?

    • @UnderdogGarage
      @UnderdogGarage  4 года назад

      Glad you enjoyed the video! Book time on replacing both seals in AllData including removal & installation of transmission says 4.7 hours total. I'm not entirely sure how accurate that is, but maybe 4-6 hours depending on skill level of mechanic?

    Remember lithium type grease attacks rubber, best using silicone grease.

    Id be more specific, there are multiple transmissions for the miatas. Looks like a 5 speed NB model

      Shinjitago Thanks for your feedback. We did mention it was a 5 speed for a 2003 NB model in the beginning of the video, but we will try and be more specific in future videos.

    One of my bolts just ripped half doing 15 ft-lb, where can I get a extra set?

      Sorry to hear about the snapped bolt. It looks like the bolts are still available from OEM parts dealers.
      Sometimes we use JimEllis Mazda parts to identify the part number then search for it online. Hope this helps.

    I think you forgot to put sealant on the bolts. These bolts go all the way through, so they will leak gear oil of installed without sealant.
