  • Con artist Jody Harris had a thing for cops, bluffing her way into police stations and charming her way into their beds. The young grifter swindled many wary men and women, as she hustled her way up and down Australia's eastern seaboard.

The fact that she turned her life around doesn't mean much to the people she affected by doing this in the first place. What if they never recover from the damage she caused by being a liar and a straight up con artist. You don't just recover from identity fraud. It takes years to straighten out, and that's if you ever do get it fixed. Got her life straight? Ok, now help straighten out and make right what you caused.

That just says to the nation go out and commit as much crime as you like. I thought the British judicial system was a joke but the Australian one is even worse. There's lots of ways to access SSNs. As an educator, I had access to literally hundreds of children's birth certificates and SSNs. I could have stolen any that I pleased, held on to them for several years, and then created all sorts of fake IDs. About 15 years ago, when I accessed my safety deposit box at my bank, in the vault, in plain site, within reach were dozens of manila account folders. Without touching the folders, I could see identifying information printed on the tabs of the folders. I could have gleaned tons of information. (The records are no longer there). Anyone who works in the records department of doctor's offices or hospitals have access to full names, addresses, birthdates and SSNs. There. That's three ways, right off the top of my head. It is actually unbelievably easy.

    • @ceceliaclarke264

@@synthiamcbride7194 Thank you. You have provided one excellent example. Others who have easy access to multiple social security numbers include: receptionists in doctors' offices; online customer service agents for banks; insurance agents; and agents who complete car registrations and photo ID services. As a person cleaning warehouses and office spaces I had easy access to thousands of social security numbers. Secretaries and managers would leave paystubs and other documents right out in full view. In the very recent past, I have cleaned office spaces with unlocked file cabinets containing thousands of customer files, all printed with social security numbers, birth dates, and addresses. In general, total lock down of physical and computer files just makes management of a business or agency too cumbersome. To a certain extent, we must go on trusting each other and hoping for the best.
On the up side, we share our birth information and social security numbers all over the place, providing access to thousands of people in a year, with generally positive results. Most people with access show respect for what amounts to an honor system for receipt of information. We should all just watch out for online and telephone schemers who are pretending to belong in some legitimate category. There are red flags to watch for. For example, legitimate staffers will not ever initiate telephone or online requests for Social Security Numbers. Legit staffer will already be looking at this information, in response to a call from a consumer. Consumers of banking and other services need to be aware of certain red flags. Real bank employee will not initiate a call and then ask for a social security number. He or she should already know, and should be guarding this information.

So...average person makes, let's say $35k/year, times 4 years that's $140k. All you have to do is rip off more than that per year, hide it, and try not to get caught, or have the crimes associated to you and it could make doing these non-violent crimes very much worth doing if you look at it all as a time investment. Good on yah Court System! You've just given the formula for success to people that don't care about jail terms.

It seems that everywhere in the world today is now soft on crime. They seem to think that this will rehabilitate criminals and that they will not reoffend. Exactly the opposite is the case, the criminals become more brazen and just keep going as they know that the consequences of being caught are low. New people join the ranks of criminality every day, as they see that crime does pay and that it is easier than working for a living.

  • @angusthompson780

While alot of disadvantaged people do not end up offending, a large part of people in prison have come from experiences like hers. Most normal people don't offend, but those who do usually have an illness or come from a broken past. Shouldn't we as a community help the victims and put measures in place to support people who could offend?

Blond haired lady (first victim) is really an innocent babe. How did she reach adulthood without coming around to understanding more about our world than this? How did she not know enough to be at least slightly cautious concerning just-met people on airplanes? Traveler with two ounces of sense keeps her handbag, and ID, safe at all times. The act of just dropping it down on a seat and walking away was an invitation to criminal behavior.
I would be entirely mistrustful, from the start, of a stranger with her eyes on me, through my time of completing an information card. I don't engage in conversations with people like this.
I have zero sympathy for this person. She should not have been traveling alone.

I'm curious about why someone chooses to do this. I realize that the thrill is probably what keeps them going, but what starts it? I had a friend in highschool & my early 20s that could easily have become a very good con-woman. She was a pathological liar, nothing serious or big, mostly just retelling events with her being front & center of whatever had happened. She was so convincing, i swear she believed them herself. Aside from that, she was extremely cute, with dimples & big, dark brown, doe like eyes that could entice people to give her what she wanted. She conned guys, but it was very low key. For all intents & purposes, she was a sugar baby, using older men to foot the bill for her life, they just didn't realize they were sugar daddies. I figure she didn't develop into a full fledged con-woman because she wasn't greedy & she didn't get thrills doing it. She wasn't extravagant, or into fancy clothes & jewelry, & was perfectly content with a small, 3rd hand car. She did secretarial & accounting work at short term jobs through a couple of temp agencies so she could have her own money & not be tied down to a permanent job. Not being able to even see myself in that kind of situation, she always amazed me with her exploits.
