- Japanese Green Tea has a lot of health benefits, but did you know the water temperature can change a lot of those - and significantly alter the taste?
This time, I travel to Fuji City in Shizuoka to visit 2 green tea masters called “cha-shi” who will tell us how to make the perfect cup and how to control the taste with temperature, explain the benefits - and how to get the most out of each drop!
Varieties of Green Tea in Fuji City
① Sencha 煎茶 (1st flush, Japan's most popular tea)
② Fukamushi Sencha 深蒸し煎茶 (Steamed sencha)
③ Kukicha 茎茶 (Twig tea)
④ Bancha 番茶 (2nd flush of Sencha)
⑤ Genmaicha (Added popped rice to Bancha)
⑥ Houjicha ほうじ茶 (Roasted Bancha)
Note: Gyocha 玉露 (Matcha 抹茶 is stone ground Gyocha) are typically grown in Kyoto.
★ What is the perfect temperature for the perfect cup of green tea?
Sencha, 70C / 158F for 2-3 minutes
If you want more caffeine and a bitter cup, use 100C boiling hot water.
Less to no caffeine, use warm 50C water - it'll be sweeter too.

Thanks so much for having me with you this time, John! Great job on the video! I hope people love seeing this and then have a laugh at my behind the scenes video. Let's do it again soon! 😍🚴🍵
These days though, green tea is cropping up more in teabag form and, at least in London, you can find many of these drinks in Asian supermarkets. Love them as they are often not sweet which makes them feel so much more refreshing!
I was not expecting that ending haha
People that did not stay til the end missed out! That was so unexpected!
Bungee!!
Can't believe one man is making these videos. Quality is that of proper tv shows with huge budgets and production team.
I would love the animated intro as a "tea" shirt 😂.
😂
That ending though... LOL... Very brave, John.
The beautiful Mount Fuji area...
the absolute perfect place to produce green tea. Now that is top-quality green tea! And that shot of Fuji in the background with the Shinkansen is quite the Japanese shot. Traveling by bike is the best way to explore places, it's how you really dive into the area and see what it has to offer.
Just saying, in 30 minutes John has over 10% the views a certain other channel has from a video thats been up for 30 DAYS... if that's not proof of John's high quality production and hard work pays off I don't know what is... success is the best way to open a new chapter in life, I hope John's 2021 is full of joy and prosperity!!
That’s because he’s not try to shill for money and clickbait for views. He also has cinematic b roll and thoughtful thumbnails. Too many people thing you can win the RUclips lottery with junk content, maybe you’ll get viral once but no one will remember you after a while. John’s new channel has been constantly growing and he’s been gaining more patreon supporters.
facts
That is because it is as much a work of art as it is a work of love. John really loves what he does, and it shows. He gives it all he has and that is felt. I think his narration, story telling and atmosphere in each episode is umatched.
@@MM-dq9pv exactly! He has the experience and the love and everything. He started out small too and slowly found his way. Now that he started a different channel many still haven´t realized that he shwitched and simply forgot the old channel. Now he has to win them all back a second time.. though that won´t be a problem.
I drink both tea 🍵 and coffee ☕ as I enjoy the flavor aspects of both. Beautifully shot and informative John. Good to see Dean join you. Kudos to you for that epic bungee jump! 👍
Yep like both
I am a coffee drinker, but I really love Genmaicha! The mix of the rice and tea is a really pleasant taste.
I like both, balance is key.
Yes, John. I already switched to pure green tea from coffee years ago for no reason. I just recently found out the enormous amount of benefits it gives to our body, and I am really happy 😃 One thing I noticed, my skin has always been glowing- I am close to my 30's and no wrinkles at all.
P.S. I am brewing green tea between 90-100°C for 5-10 mins. 1 -2 cups per day after my last meal.
I was having too much coffee for a teenager! Like way too much! at the age of 17 i made the switch. I no longer drink caffeinated coffee, only decaf. It makes me sick, I can't handle the caffeine that is found in it. Now if I need caffeine, I go for tea and I have never looked back. I feel like tea is much better and I don't have this wild crash in the afternoon that leaves me feeling exhausted.
By the way, I love that you added the bungee jump. That's was a beautiful gorge underneath the bridge. An irresistible view of the colorful landscape of Japan.
Are you Japanese?
🍵 I hated my first bottled green tea when I arrived in Shinjuku . It was so bitter and unpleasant. Now it's the only type of tea I thoroughly enjoy. The soothing quality of it is irreplaceable. Thanks, John. This has got 'love letter to green tea' written all over the episode. 🍵
When you get past that first few, a new taste your body doesn’t register, it becomes refreshing! I was the same - with beer and coffee too 😂 and broccoli 🥦
same to me
Thats weird to me too. The #1 bottled green tea brand in Japan is also sold worldwide and it honestly tastes bitter and bland, also its pee colored. The high quality loose leaf I buy direct from Japanese farmers brews into an almost neon green, and is naturally sweet. Personally I prefer the fresh loose leaf, and still find it weird Japan loves the bottled stuff when they having amazing tea a few miles away.
The more bitter the stronger it is, I hated bitter tea or just tea in general but now I can’t drink those cheap tea bag kind of tea, it’s too bland for me I need it to be very strong
@@__aceofspades they like bottled stuff the same reason why microwaveable food is popular world wide in developed countries - no time, disposable income. I do hope younger Japanese learn about ocha because for many of my friends, they didn’t know how water temperature controls sweetness-bitterness and the variety preparation. Interesting! Also, coffee is just better marketed. We don’t see ocha houses like coffee houses. It’s not cool.
This was a fascinating look into the the world of Japanese Green Tea. I had no idea of the variety of teas and the difference that temperature makes in the taste.
Top 5 channels on youtube 100%, keep it up John!
I remember my 1st trip to Japan, buying a bottle of green tea from the local DonQi. I took one mouthful and was pretty sure I had picked up cooking oil instead of green tea. Never again!
However, I now find myself looking on Amazon for some sencha, a proper tea pot, and youtube instructions of how to make it properly. Looking forward to my first real experience, coming from a lifelong coffee addict, it should be fun!. Thanks john & Dean, great to see you collab again.
Almost to 100K John. Congratulations!!
That's so much to learn about tea, it's sophisticated yet elegant. I drink both tea and coffee in a daily basis. Most of the time, I will start the day with a cup of coffee and sipping tea through out the day. I especially like a cup of Matcha right after meal, that's THE best way to finish a meal in my opinion. I didn't expected the ending of the video, but I ENJOYED it very much. Thanks John and Dean!
英語で丁寧に緑茶を紹介してくれてありがとうございます。
I have switched to green tea many years a go. Every day I am having a bowl of matcha + cup or two of sencha / gyokuro. Japanese green tea is the best. Great video.
Very nice and instructive episode 🙂 The bungee scene 🤣
Thank you 🙏 John for a high quality video packed full of information and content. ✌️ 💖 🙏 Levent 🦁
This is my favorite kind of John Daub video. Thanks, John!
Yesss, happy to see you back.
I drink tea many times a week, jasmin tea is my favorite
Ooh! Jasmine Tea is so good too! I backpacked China in 2000-2001 and would sip tea on long train rides for days. Now everything is so fast. Jasmine tea to me = slow down and relax 😌
Ilove Japanese green tea,and green tea from Mount Fuji is special.
Love it! Can’t wait for next episode
Wow! Interesting story and amazing filming. Beautiful place and nice work John. ✌️
When I'm in Japan, I tend to drink more tea than coffee. This was an awesome video, John. I didn't know the difference between sencha and hojicha, but now I do.
Another outstanding video! Thank you John so much for your work on the platform!
Enjoying my cup of refreshing green tea while watching this episode!!!
Yes! Back to these mini stories/documentaries! Love it!
What stunning footage, you’re lucky you got so many shots of Fuji on a clear day! I’m happy how this turned out, I would love to try more authentic teas like this. I usually drink herbal tea to help combat my anxiety and help me sleep, so it’s interesting to see how the heat can affect the properties. Never was a fan of coffee or black tea though. They’re too strong for me and caffeine can give me headaches. It’s just amazing the amount of detail goes into producing green teas in Japan.
I love this format, a quick and an efficient way to tell a story.
AHHH FINALLY!!!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SOOO LONG!!!!!
Sugoi! SO much information about Green tea! Beautiful scenery also. Thank you, John! 💞
Sorry I missed the notification for this! Thanks for the high quality work ❤️

I love green tea 🍵 Beautiful shots and very interesting video, good job John 😄
This was a really informative video. I really want to try some different types of green tea now. The cinematography was great in this video. So many cool shots from different angles.
Thank you 🙏. This was great!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and it’s very informative. You really make beautiful videos. I always wondered why some use tiny bowls to drink the tea. Makes sense. I can’t wait to see the upcoming ones. Love the bungee jump!
1 word to describe this video. Heaven.
The farm’s atmosphere is so great
What a great video. A lot of information, I can not wait for future green tea videos.
i remember 1st time drinking a vendo greentea in Japan, i was expecting a sweet taste, but it turned out better for me. i instanly liked it. i drink it everyday using hot water. i even buy the dried greentea packs whenever i go to Japan to take it home for me and my family.
静岡、京都、福岡...産地によって緑茶の味は異なります。是非、色々な産地の緑茶を試してみてください🍵
Glad to get to see another edited video, that was very informative.
Another reason to visit Japan, trying Green Tea from the source! Thanks John for another interesting peek into Japan 🇯🇵
Wonderful video, great job!!
My favorite video of Only in Japan. I love green tea!
Incredible quality and information of these videos aside, John truly does the most for his viewers, as evidenced by that bungie jump shot
Love, Love, Love, Green Japanese Tea. Great video.
Green tea has always been my secondary to coffee, as in I drink my morning coffee then green tea all day long. Helps me get through my day and in the winter months I squeeze a lemon slice and a few slivers of ginger as an immune boost to help fight off anything coming my way. This is a great video on the different benefits to green tea.
Great video and very well produced
Absolutely loved this video John. Thanks so much.
I learnt quite alot and appreciate more about Tea and enjoyed the Bungee Jump at the end.
Keep up the quality content.
Need more videos like this!
Really enjoy this video thank you so much John and Only in Japan production! 🥺❤️😍😘💕
That ending looks fun.
Great video and look forward to learning more in this series. Thanks, John.
Wonderful video, thanks for doing this John!
Fantastic. So well filmed and presented.
Thanks I love green tea
Green Tea is awesome! Now it's AWESOMER after watching this! I've been drinking Green Tea since I was a kid and never knew about the different water temperatures bringing out a different taste. Must experiment with the water now. 😄
Thank you John for another beautiful, inspiring, informative and amazing episode. Looking forward to learning more about Green Tea. Keep up the awesomeness 😁🤙
Full of information & I love it! Cool 😎
Interesting new knowledge about Green Tea! Thanks John!
Love your work
great video quality...and the ending was really great
Hi Mr. John, fantastic video!! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this show! It is good to learn more about Japanese tea making and drinking.
The camera angles are so good, I'm impressed knowing this was made by one person.
I think it has to be more than one. For instance, that drone shot at the beginning wasn't being controlled/filmed by John.
14:41 for a moment there he sounded like the Lego Star Wars Yoda death screech lol
So good!!!!
great video, JD. love how absolutely peaceful that area where they grow the tea is.
Very informative! Never seen the difference between brewing temperatures explained so clearly.
beautiful and informative video, thanks John
Awesome content as always Mr. John Daub!
Another great video! 🍵🌱🗻
So much passion in all your videos, love your stuff. Amazing that you still have so much creativity and motivation after all these years. Keep it up.👍
Very quality production, John. Informative and enjoyable. Thanks for your hard work and dedication.
Well this episode had a bit of everything, informative, great scenery, and daredevil stunts! The part about the different water temperatures was the best part (other than the bungee jump) as I can now experiment and adjust to suit my taste.
I only started drinking green tea when I began eating at Japanese restaurants. On its own I usually only drink it during the winter months. My favourite when dining is the Genmaicha, I find the popped rice stimulates my appetite.
Great video, learned so much. I'm a huge tea fan. Thank you!
YOU ALWAYS PROVIDE SO MUCH LEARNING CONTENT W/ AN AMAZING STORYTELLING ❤️❤️❤️
I love this video on Japanese Green Tea. Everything you covered in this video is something that I would like to check out when I am finally able to travel to Japan. I especially would love to try that green tea tasting at the plantation. That view of Mount Fuji in the background while tasting the tea is breathtaking. I'm in love with Mount Fuji. What a great view from the fields of beloved green tea.
Beautiful place..
I drink tea every day for the past twenty years, but I just gained most my knowledge about tea in past twenty minutes. Thanks John!
green tea is simp-le but yet has so much depth.
Yep simple, though very powerful and complicated in it's on way. It's kind of crazy how many overlook it or under appreciate it. I have certain seasons and time I would drink it on a daily basis. Then stop so my body doesn't get use to it all the time. It's a great tool in ones own health and well being. I also love coffee, but I keep it balanced
This is the type of video that should be trending!
I truly enjoy your work, my girlfriend is born and raised in Tokyo Japan and I am learning so much from her, and you are my bonus, I am glad I stumbled upon your platform. Thank you
Beautiful video John. the last screaming bungee jump was awaited much.....thank you for letting us see, u screaming again😂😂🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Whoa, the tea fields and Fuji are gorgeous!
Hello John!!! So good to see you!!! Thanks for the video
My family is from Fuji and it's so good to see that someone is finally doing a video on the tea there! Thank you!
I lived in Fujinomiya back in 2000 and loved it there. I’ll be back again soon :)
