Dune was my first " adult" books.. I've read the series multiple times ( 60yrs old now) and reap some new insight each time...ahead of his time, unique in his vision.
Dune is indeed sci-fi but all neglect the second truism of the book. It is also the first space opera in history. Reasons are 1. It generational in it's timespan. 2. It's characters come and go (and unique that some reoccur constantly) 3. The protagonist the same (family) for hundreds of generations. I also read honorverse and see the mimicry of dune in it's pages so I am confident in calling dune the first true space opera.
@@brianjohnson5272 I haven't read all of the books, but wouldn't The Foundation Saga be the first Space Opera?
AMEN
@@Wintermute-- Dune is 1965...you tell me which is " first".
@@jeanfish7 It states on Wikipedia the first of The foundation short stories was published between 1942 -1950.....so you tell me which is first.
Dune was written for people that like sci-fi ....and for those that dont.
You forgot that there are probably even a larger group which SPECIFICALLY dislike Dune based on everything that is known (and culture is very infused with it, and I don't mean subconsciously)... And many who like science fiction probably don't like it, which seems just obvious.
I have read them all. Some good , some terrible, some in-between.
I really liked the Butlerian jihad, the machine war, and the battle of corrin.
I also loved loved the novels: House Corinno, House Harkonin, and House Atredies.
Dune is basicly Fantasy disguised as Sci-fi. You have mages (mentats/bene gesserit/space guld), main weapons are cold steel or throwing ones, protagonist is chosen one with superhuman abilities, u have feudal system. Seems like typical fantasy to me.
@@kentjensen4504 same for me
You know its about to be serious talk when there's glasses in his glasses ...
Reading Dune changed the way I think about Everything! Thank you for this shoutout. I just hope they don't screw this one up like everybody else keeps doing to other great sagas. Cheers!
That's how a song of ice and fire is for me. I'm on my 10th reread right now and it just never gets old. I really need to try dune out though I've heard good things I dunno I'm just hesitant
@@manofhonor1685 There is plenty of room in our hearts for far more than one child. As it should be with great literature. I promise you that you will never regret opening your heart and mind to the adoption of Dune. Listen to the audio book of the first one, which is free here on You Tube. You will never doubt trying new things ever again. Cheers!
@@kristinradams7109 Didn't know there was an audiobook of Dune on youtube, let alone a free version. Thanks for getting the word out.
@@ryanschuster151 You are very welcome :) Please help me tell others! You Tube is an audio book lover's wet dream, if you take the time to look. Cheers!
Not an easy read but a rewarding one, like the Lord of the Rings.
Agreed
Me and my brother make jokes about LOTR. Tolkien spends 8 pages describing one tree and half a page on the conversation. I love Tom and wish he was in the movies.
@@ericcalm9924 Yes, he is a funny fellow and his boots are yellow.
@@ericcalm9924 "Tolkien spends 8 pages describing a tree," this is why I haven't finished that series. I can read it fine and love the story but get fucked off with that. It isn't good story telling to spend so much time on needless descriptions. It confuses me because the Hobbit is a well written and concise story where the description of places don't become dissertations.
@@Si_Mondo I have been saying for decades, Tolkien was a fantastic world builder and linguist, but he was NOT an amazing writer.
Frank Herbert was a genius!!
Dune will always be my all time favorite science fiction.
When reading the first book, I felt the notion of past and of myth, as though the story being told to you by a Fremen who lived at a later time. It seemed more like a legend than a story. As I've read further on, it seems to become more and more "present". Does anyone else get this feeling?
That's an interesting take and I can see what you mean.
Indeed, and that's one of the many reasons why I prefer the second trilogy.
That legend-like quality is one of my favorite things about Dune. The way it is written is almost psychedelic.
Wasn't it peppered with lines from irulans history book about muaddib? Those lines might have been giving that impression.
Dune was very common on the coffee tables of 1960s hippies. A long low table that is set before a couch.
You've definitely sold me on giving Dune a read, I'll be picking up the new deluxe hardcover edition once it comes out in October. The only exposure I've had to Dune was the 1984 movie, but I've always been interested in reading it. It's about time I finally start the series!
That movie was...not bad, exactly, but I don't think you interpret the same story unless you've read the book. Gotta give it credit for the sand and worms, though - those were awesome.
Did you do it?
I'm reading the book right now. About 650 pages in, it's a masterpiece! 😍
Enjoy. Indulge in the rest of the series as you will find quite a few answers to many questions Herbert leaves you hanging on in the first novel. For example: Paul Atreides is not the main hero of the story.
What version of the book is over 650 pages long?
@@snmcfadden the originally dune is 900 pages.
@@snmcfadden I agree. I think Reeves was smoking a blunt when he posted that two years ago. Four-hundred twelve pages in the book.
@@jacobreeves3110 the version I read was way shorter than that in terms of pages.
These books made me think about the arc of humanity and it’s history and future in another way.
This channel is excellent man, really.
Saw the film as a kid and it inspired me to read the books. Up to that point I struggled with reading. The difficulty of reading Dune did not sway me to give up. It forced me to become a reader and I finally loved reading. I credit Herbert for this.
This is quite possibly the best You Tube video I have EVER seen. You just reminded me of some of the most magical, intense reading years of my entire life. Keep up the great work!
I can't tell you how much I Needed to see this tonight. Thank you so very, very much!
Keep up with the expanse man! That level of quality stays perfectly consistent throughout
Thanks again for these very thoughtful videos. You do really great work my friend.
A major inspiration in so many things I do, including my own book to come. Fascinating read.
I'd love to see a video on how Dune has inspired the game of Dungeons and Dragons. I'm still relatively new to the "Dune-iverse" but I'm a veteran D&D fan and I think I can pick out a few examples from the game. The Purple Worm and the race of the Kalashtar come to mind. Also, I guess the general setting of the Dark Sun campaign.
Hey Quinn, so you know, you got me reading the Dune novel ( just the first one for now) before i watch the movie. I m not a sci-fi fan but your discussions intriggered me enough to check out Herbert’s narrative. Thank you for your work and your commitment to your audience.
I'm not sure how frequently you get this but THANK YOU Quinn! As a lifelong Dune fan, you not only do it justice and emphasize the importance and complexity of the novel but you actually make it exciting to be a Dune fan again! Keep up the good work
Love these bite sized stuff but lets see this Ultimate Chapterhouse guide bud. Keep it up
Totally with you, Chapterhouse (and Heretics) my fave; Frank's writing just continued to improve as he himself grew...
Loved how you took this overview into a comparison of morality vs. ethics. Brilliantly done!
I arrived first due to my expert Navigator. Your videos are the best I have come across in relation to The Dune saga. I read Dune in 1972 and the following books and it spun my 13 year old mind way out supercharging my young imagination so that it was never the same again and am I glad of that. I have reread them again and again over the decades always finding something more in the stories every time I reread them an grateful that I discovered Frank Herbert at an early age.
Frank Herbert's Dune saga and Asimov's Foundation series stand head and shoulders above all others but thats just my opinion. Keep making your wonderful videos with their wonderful clarity and style .
All this dune content lately is getting me hyped!!
Dude, I'm sold, love your content. Love how you give the dune books their due justification.
I’ve never read the whole saga, only the first three books (3 times each one, I think), I don’t know why.
But I’ve always read it translated into Portuguese. Now, after watching your many videos, I decided re-read it and try the whole saga, so I’m listening to the audiobooks in English (finished the first one last week).
It’s a different experience but I’m loving it. Hope I’ll be able to keep my focus to the real ending not just the first three.
....
I’m happy you started The Expanse series. I’ve listened the audiobooks of the whole saga (so far) and they are amazing (even though my English writting skills aren’t 😅).
I love how much you love Dune! I made it to Heretics years ago and never made it back to the books for some reason. I'm due for a reread to finish it all. I absolutely loved the Expanse too it keeps getting better book after book!
my brother got me a set of the first six books for christmas, i came straight to your channel bc i knew you’d have something i’d need to watch before i started!
Excellent video, keep up the great work...
I just started reading it and I already feel like I've been sucked into a new world. And your voice is so pleasant!
I came for your ASOIAF stuff and I loved your eerie prensence and topics so I watched one of your dune videos and now I want to read it but I haven’t really read a lot of sci fI I read mostly fantasy.
I was literally the same way before I picked up dune. Apart from reading some star wars novels, I never read sci fi and focused on fantasy. Dune is the perfect series for fantasy readers to dip their toes into sci fi. I just finished the series and it is tied with Malazan for my favorite series ever.
It has elements of fantasy in it.
Dune has surface fantasy elements, but when they are explained further, they end up being a logical conclusion to a natural phenomenon that we see all around us to a lesser extent even today.
Those first 7 books are the tip of the mountain of Sci-fi, as far as I am concerned,
I would say , Don't be put off. It's soft SF which is more interested in character than in (say) the mechanics of space travel.
Your word dance to avoid spoilers was well done. Great video. Looking forward to the morals vs ethics video.
You speak so clearly! I wish I could deliver like you!
Well said👏👏👏 Amazing video
Nice video man. I like how you give credit to the artists for all the artwork!
Not seen any of your videos for a while. Just wanted to congratulate on the success of the new format and getting in front of the camera.
I adore your work. Keep it up!
Dude, so glad I found your channel, hats off to you bromigo!
Thanks for what you do buddy! I just avoided your videos for about two weeks while I read dune. Now I'm back!
Been watching your videos for a few years now and I must say you are one of my favorite along with Mr H, Comicsexplained, Grimdark.
Read it for the first time when I was 13 back in 70's, it actually changed my life. Gave me a completely new view on religion.
is Dune about religion?
Yep. same age, and spent `1/2yr becoming Bene Gesserit. Even had a whole "prescient trance" ritual. Fell waaay short; seems that multi-millenia training program was necessary after all...
@@joseayala2940 not… _necessarily_ , but there is a large amount of philosophical and spiritual thinking, and a lot of religious iconography. I’d say it’s a lot more about politics and how that plays behind the scenes of religion. The story does have a central theme of distrusting messiah figures
@@joseayala2940 about control.
Mainly about myth making, most prominent of which was what missionaria protectiva branch of bene gesserits s activity s fruits. Guild is the only way is a myth. Can't live outside imperium is a myth. Supremacy of sardokars is a myth. Bene Gesserit are witches is a myth. vice versa.
Samples include(in other words, I only know these. All hail readers unlike me who read all the saga😅);
Guild: mainly by monopoly, nearly perfecting their knowledge about their craft and related areas, thus resulting in minor prescience(future forecasting)
Houses, including emperor: by military and trade. Of which politics were both by and for. Chicken and egg ish. Add to that the laws and customs.
IX: monopoly
Benetleilax: monopoly and strict knowledge control, including stealth.
Bene Gesserit: knowledge control. İncluding biologically stored ones. Thus resulting in prescience (minor future forecasting). And shealth. Aim, protecting humanity, by major knowledge control, by obtaining the tool to upgrade their present effectivity, by controlling the genetic makeup of the said tool, by most natural means at hand(due to machine aversion) which is controlling who his ancestors will be.
And myth making.
You're doing a great job presenting sci-fi to people. Keep on going, man!
You, Dominic Noble and KrimsonRogue’s channel got me to read Dune
Great video very informative
i wish you could talk about the other dune books and the book of the sun in the future
it is just an idea for content
good to see you bringing attention to the old ways of scifi writing
warms my heart
cheers
I love your stuff on Dune and thought I was subscribed for months.... nope. Now I am. Keep up the good work.
Dune is a book I've been reading once a year for the last 7 or 8 years. Honestly it is my favorite book I've ever read.
Have you gotten to any of the other ones? I’m on the third right now.
@@magisterofsteam7880 The entire main saga yeah. I really like them. The style changes when his son takes over but they are still good reads.
@@the3nder1 I just got there and I miss the old style. There was something about it that really drew me.
@@the3nder1 really? For me, it felt like the follow-up to Shakespeare was "See Spot Run"...
Could not agree more! Just started Dune after watching several of your videos and I'm a convert! So much depth!
Thank you again for passing on to the younger generation, a series that I began not long after it was published. You do this in a most beautiful manner. Again, a boomer thanks you most sincerely.📚
Dude! You're the best. I started reading the Dune saga, thanks to you. I just finished the first book. Onto Messiah now. The way you narrate the book is awesome. It helps me understand this universe. I like that you mention the Incal. Kudos to you :) I really hope Dune 2020 will be worth the wait. I'm 36 now. It took me until now to read it and understand the 1984 movie haha. Will have to watch the serie also. Cheers
As always, your video is sublime.
Bless your heart for this channel.
I am eagerly looking forward to the start of your Expanse series!
I’ve just started reading the first book after watching the trailer I have to admit I’ve never really read sci-fi but I’m really enjoying the book
amazing video and tone
Bro ive never read nor watched the lynch movie yet love to watch your vids, your so passionate about it plus your narrate well etc, i should definitively read it one day but i already have so much to read for uni
Good work as usual!
Dune is my favourite book ever it’s the only book l have two of on kindle and the anniversary soft back addition and these vids just reinforce that warm fuzzy feeling
Ahhh the Kerbels Space Programm Space theme in the background. You truly are a man of culture.
Your videos are the best!
I picked up "Dune" and "Midnight At The Well Of Souls" at the same time, I reread both about every 5 years as it lets me know where I've traveled in my life in the interim.
Dune made me want to have better control over my mind and body so I practiced the disciplines from the book and, I believe, it saved my life several times.
Well Of Souls stretched my mind to try to see the universe as a construct, long before it came up in physics.
Thanks for what you do here!
Omg!! You read the expanse!! I can’t wait to see videos on it.
Oh cool. I searched for this video out of my own curiosity but you just uploaded it yesterday :)
I picked Dune up in a little book store while I was on vacation because you recomend it so often. I've never read scifi before but I can't wait to finally get into it
I'm loving these dune videos
Love your channel! Keep up the great vids. I pray they make a movie worthy of the title Dune!
One of the best book series i have ever read =)
Your channel is fast becoming one of my favorit too^^
You've put me on to something. Thank you sir
dune has always interested me, but sadly i don't have the time or mindset right now to read it. but thankfully, there are channels like yours, that give me at least the opportunity to scratch the surface. ;)
I have read the Dune series more than 25 years ago, and as I was searching for info on the new Dune movie, I stumble upon your channel. Wonderful find I must say! (I have read the series again last month just because of you!). I really hope they will not stop making a movie just on the first book, but probably they will, as it is the most action packed one. But, for me, is not the most interesting one. I think Chapterhouse is the best one, probably I found it so because I'm older now :D
Would LOVE to see Expanse coverage here! Good TV show but a GREAT book series.
I know, he scared me when he was talking about boring SciFi and then transitioned to "So I read Leviathan Wakes..." Glad to hear he liked it though, and I hope he covers it sometime.
@@Provigilman
It would be interesting to get his take on what earlier SF has influenced this series.
I can detect the traces of Robert Heinlein and Larry Niven.
There's also a board game called Belter from 1979, where you can play as one of a number of competing corporations or else as the Earth - based Peace Keeping Force.
Does anyone else remember it?
So many series I want to read and no time to commit to starting them. Ugh. I love the show.
Yay, one the fantasy youtubers I watch finally started reading the Expanse!
Seriously not enough content about it. Solid books
I just got it as an audiobook... been meaning to read it for years so finally looking forward to diving in!!!
Thank you. I look up to you, intellectually. I have gotten more from the series now, even though I got very much from it 17 years ago.
Thank you for another great Dune video. I'm looking forward to this material as it comes out. I'm pretty sure I could come up with another 96! But there would certainly be spoilers.
Definitely not an easy read but OMG I'm loving every page. I just started this journey. Currently in the first book just when (MINI SPOILERS ) Jessica received the Water of Life and became a Reverend Mother. I don't even know how to explain the feeling I got reading this chapter, it was amazing! My favorite chapter so far! I can't wait to read more!
Damn, more I watch you and listen to your love of Herbert's accomplishment/s, thus -- the more that I am deciding to one day try again to get back into Dune and read the full saga. Tried in High School but it was too much for me. But, the movie helped me to understand more what was happening. Glad to see someone love something so much. My love in high school was Riverworld by Farmer. Now, that's a good read and series too.
Thats some badass art
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” One of my favorite quotes ever
Wow! You are really good at cutting and pasting. I want to be cool like you.
@@fitnesspoint2006don’t worry buddy, you’ll get there someday
Jeez, fine, I'll read it. And those spectacular illustrations... damn.
Fantastic video
I still need to read further into the series, seeing a few new Cultures within this video gave me some motivation to wonder how far it goes.
With the release of the beautiful new hard cover edition, I think I'm gonna have another go at it from the beginning.
I think I would like to hear your narration for the Dune series as an audiobook, you have a nice voice for it.
So crazy that was was looking for my next read and this showed up on my homepage
I've started reading them because of you! 🤗
Wow. I just discovered your channel. Immediate subscribe. I think I'm in love.
I read Dune book 1 recently, It was really good. I wanted to watch your videos about dune, but I don't want to spoil other book in the Saga.
Read them first, and keep an open mind as after book 3, shit gets REAL!
I'm a big fan of your ASOIAF videos. I started Dune after you reviewed it. Best decision ever!! Thanks, man
P.S. Hyperion Cantos worth a shot?
Thank you for your channel. Frank Herbert's books have had a lifelong impact on me. Wouldn't it be fantastic if the complete Dune saga was required reading in schools? I can't help but imagine the social benefits.
If you did the reading for the book series, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Man you caught me just with your voice. I’m going to buy this
There is one more point: the Herbert's description of the Arrakis' ecology is the most accurate fictional work with James Lovelock's Gaia Hypotesis.
the Expanse series...yes I know right...great collaboration....thank you for the videos on at least 3 of the top sci-fi powerhouse series of all time...IMHO ;-D
I was 11 when I first read June and it was one of the first science fiction novels I ever read. I suspect having no preconceptions helped a lot with me really getting into the world and gets philosophy. It also helped that I had done some heavy reading before bags like bullfinches mythology and other stuff.
I'm loving Dune Trillogy so far. Mind blowing man
You reeeally need to put a comma between "blowing" and "man"! :-)
OK, I'm convinced. I've read everything else so I'll give this a go finally. I'm glad I saved it for now!
Just finished Messiah and I'm about to start Children. You are 100% right. These books are master works that deserve to be cherished.
I enjoyed your video, but, as enormous as Herbert's influence was, I still think you overstate it some. As an example, your comment that Dune must have been the inspiration for BoosterSpice. To pick one of many possible alternative sources, Wagner had Freia's life extending Golden apples in Das Rhinegold, written almost 100 years earlier. All writers pull from earlier sources, including Frank Herbert
Just found your channel. Very glad I did. Sub!
Reading this for the first time as an adult soon. Stoked.
