Some things have happened since I uploaded this video. And I have uploaded a follow-up video on my second channel (this channel). Give it a watch if you can after watching this video to get the full story.
I personally believe this is totally normal. With essentially every non-subscription software, you need to re-buy it for every major release. That is super common. Maybe give those who had the old version a few percentages off, but it's still fine.
The pricing is also totally understandable. In a world where servers pay model artists hundreds per month, paying 40$ once for such a plugin is completely understandable.
I get the hate but remember that there is a huge difference between ModelEngine 3 and ModelEngine 4. ModelEngine 3 is based on armorstands but since 1.19.4 display entities exist, that is what MEG 4 is based on. This added a ton of new features and possibilities to MEG 4. So creating a new resource on another site is reasonable in my opinion BUT... the price tag of 40 dollars is way too high. I get that it's a big project and I get the complexity of it because I'm a plugin developer myself. But the developer of MEG already had a ton of loyal customers. They could've also released the plugin for the same price, or just give the old customers free or discounted access to the new resource because 40 dollars for a public minecraft plugin is just absurd.
I think a one time price of 40$ is cheap tbf. I don’t know how many hours this took to code but I would assume it was A LOT of work to properly upgrade this.

He literally just stopped giving people free updates and is now called a scammer. That's just not fair! Besides that, if the new version contains important bug fixes and upgrades, he can certainly charge money for his work to update the plugin. Just maybe not double the price, $40 is really a lot for a Minecraft plugin. Great Video Kasai
ModelEngine4 is an entire recode of ModelEngine3 with many massive changes and features making it far more favorable for server owners. I see no issue in the route they have taken.
I was annoyed when it happened, but my bigger issue was that I had to rebuy the plugin just to find some of my mobs that worked in MEG3 did not work in MEG4
I don't think many people can pay 40$ for a plugin.
The plugin is very cool and I for sure know that but when you want to create a unique topic these days you need custom models so it is essential to use, but many server owners aren't going to spend 40$ for the newest and best version of the plugin their server might make no money, and that is why you shouldn't buy a 40$ plugin if you are not 100% sure you are going to make money, especially if you are in a country where 40$ is very very much.
This is where exclusivity comes in play. Only the servers wanting a nice feature in their servers would have access to it, and it will filter all the annoying kids that cannot afford it and are pain anyways
@@MrAlienProds I agree about the annoying kids part but not all people want to spend 40$ for a server that might fail. Even older people (let's say 16+) would think that and that's why I said that. Every kid would just say really stupid things about the plugin.
@@suprimecat my advice there is......dont start a server. If you want it to grow anyways, you should be prepared to spend quite a bit especially on the startup/getting plugins

that is something I would want to hear from Louis Rossmann about. from my standpoint i think that the dev should have a contact option that would let people who already bought the plugin to like pay up the resting cost ($39.99 - $19.99 = $20) and the dev will give the plugin to them; and to prevent scams he should require a purchase confirmation or something
I agree it is scummy. However, as the developer, they do, have the right to do whatever with their plugin.
That being said, if it was me developing the plugin, i'd have done things differently. Seeing that it is a major overhaul of core mechanics, I would charge again for it and maybe a small bit more than previously. But... big but.. I would've given the people who already supported the first project on Spigot a massive discount for all the support they've given me. That’s just my personal opinion.
I absolutely love this answer! Without those initial supporters on Spigot, the plugin would have never gotten as popular as it is today. So indeed it's only fair to 'thank' those supporters with something like a discount
There was a discount, at least for a few months after release, for those who had previously bought ModelEngine3
Imo I'd say that the plugin developer tells everyone that has bought the plugin before to open a support ticket and show proof of buying it on Spigot and once that is shown give them a discount since they did already buy it once when it wasn't so expensive.
Sure the developer might not do it at all, but I think it would just be a kind gesture to show everyone who has supported him and his project so to say, even though it might take time to do this.
a scam can still be legal or within the scammers rights to do so just because they are allowed to do something doesn't automatically make them not scammers. reselling the product to someone who has already bought it but at a higher cost is a scam not just scummy.
And My Opnion I think it is nice and wrong too at the same time because people should read the terms and maybe the developer also could be more nice to people.
bro, they bought an service and the provider moved out not telling anyone about it and re-selling his service to everyone, making everyone re-buy his product again for an double price.

I think it depends a lot on the amount of development work needed here.
If it took a lot of effort to upgrade the plugin properly, fix bugs, etc - I would not want to give that as a free upgrade to anyone.
Imagine spending hundreds of hours on dev work only for a low amount of people actually paying for the new version and all old users just get it for free.
People can and should charge according to the work they put in. Everyone complaining doesn’t understand anything about business or work.
I don't think they should have done what they did; instead, I believe they should have provided their loyal consumers a discount for the new edition or a partial refund.
On the other hand,
they are within their rights to do so according to the Spigots terms and conditions, which you the consumer agreed to.
All I can say after pulling this off is that I feel they will lose both loyal consumers and potential new customers.
When a number more developers offering the same thing appear, Model Engine might most likely notice an decrease in traffic because the customers from model engine probably would move to a new developer, if they haven't already.
Those who purchased recently with PayPal within 130 days. I would try and get your refund through them.

He might be the only developper getting decently payed, remember that people sometimes took 3 to 6month to sometime a whole year cumulated to develop a plugin, all for sometimes a 5$ of 20 people, so no, people need to understand that work for free and free updates and support on the long term needs to be payed, and people on the internet and particularly on psigot have very much been used to crack stuff, not pay for it or say its overpriced. Sometimes even people compare plugin to minecraft price (its a stupid comparison, its very niche minecraft server plugin, not a lot of people will use your plugin in comparison to a full game like minecraft, so you must divide proportionnaly the pricing).
So no, and even me I think it should be monthly payment since ho much youtubers are making tons of money out of this plugin in particular.
I don't think this is a problem since ModelEngine 4 is a complete recode of the plugin. So technically you're not buying the plugin again, you're buying a completely new plugin with lots of new features and different technology behind it. It is based on item displays, has many network-related optimizations, and many other features such as player skin bones.
Personally, I think it would have been better if you had made it clear that it was a complete recode and not "the same plugin". That might help people understand that there is a reason why they need to buy it again, otherwise that video might boost the hate against the developer. (I know that's not your intention) I mean, don't get me wrong, it might be frustrating for some consumers, but the developer has to invest a lot of time in recoding and somehow compensate for that. However, it would have been nice to give a discount to those who bought the older version.
Or, and just ballparking here: it's fine to stop doing work altogether for a paid plugin. Nobody has you shackled. But if you're going to continue the same plugin you already purchased just because it got updated (and you keep trying to say it's different, because it was recoded... its ME3 and ME4. That's their names. It's called an update on their own website.) that's where it gets scummy. How can you say you don't owe anyone anything anymore for that thing, then continue working on it and try to charge people again? Why would they pay you again? There's literally nothing stopping you from doing this over and over.
@@redacteddata It's not the same plugin. He doesn't work on the same thing again. The plugin works completely different internally, you can't compare MEG3 and MEG4. You're paying for a different plugin with different functionality.
The developer has to make money somehow. How should he compensate the entire recode? He doesn't make money off the people that already bought the plugin. Free updates for a plugin are ok, but MEG4 is an entire new plugin. Providing MEG4 as a free update would be the dumbest financial decision ever.
There's a lot of work behind that recode and you have to pay for that. If someone doesn't have the money to pay for that amount of work he has to code it by himself (which most people will not be able to) or just accept that they can't have that feature on their server.
When buying the plugin, you accept the Terms of service. You can't complain about something you accepted when buying the product.

Very personal rant, but over the years Ive slowly become bitter towards the Minecraft server staff/ownership/development culture and community, and this is yet another great reason, the damn price of everything. Its bad enough that server host prices are at an all time high and each MC update requires more server power to run. Lets also not forget every 14 year old who has 3 months of moderation experience on AkumaMC trying to charge $300 a month to be a "community manager". But now we have well known developers reselling an UPDATE for double the prices, screwing over everyone who purchased the plugin, including myself. I understand, Ive read the info and the comments I know how huge of an upgrade it is, but how are we charging people who paid $20 for a license, $40 for a plugin that does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if you don't make your own model/textures or pay someone else to. Totaly different story if this is somekind of stand alone plugin or gamemode core.
14 year old me was disappointed at the lack of opportunity to own a Minecraft server because of money. Flash forward 8 years coming and going from MC, making more than minimum wage and barely able to afford rent. Still no opportunity because of greed in the market. So, is this a scam? Absolutely. Regardless if you use this plugin or not, we all can agree this shit is dumb. Glad to have finally made the decision to move on after staying loyal to the idea for so long. Sad but it is what it is..
I don’t get the hate. I see MEG3 and MEG4 as separate plugins, not an update. I now own both and I think $40 is fine. It’s worth the investment!

In my opinion the developer has the morral right to do it, but should the cost of the plugin set a little higher as before but or give an option to get the discount they already paid.
(Note: discount only avaleble in form of a ticket and a proof that ist was bought)
You are very wrong because you are not paying $40 dollars if you have already purchased Meg3. The MEG4 mechanics are a huge leap forward and well worth the money. Additionally, it's only 20/40 dollars in terms of server earnings, which is terribly little. Considering that ordering a plugin from a developer just for yourself costs much more, it costs hundreds of dollars.
I think they should refund everyone if they contact support or at least give them a discount.
This is actually upsetting because I just bought it off spigot now I have to but it of them for another 40$ I think they should increase the price on spigot but still update it on spigot so it don't matter where you get it from
I think, that it's a bit scammy, because if you have to purchase the same plugin again. So I think of course it's ok, but it is an massive breach of trust.
If I were a Model Engine customer, my trust would for sure plumate if I heard that, all of a sudden, I had to rebuy the plugin elsewhere (for €40) to get new updates
Bro it is not scam but having a upgrade and important bug fixes and then put it on another website that people dont know of and make them pay $40 is absurd because no one is paying that and all those people who have bought it should be given the version free and the price should have been just $10 or $5 dollars increased not half

If they were to just stop working on it, it'd be fine with that. We don't own plugin devs even if we bought a version of something. But, if you plan to continue the development of a project you already charged people for, it's beyond scummy to recharge for the same product for updates just because YOU changed companies. The project insofar as your user base is concerned is the same and this is just "The reason they spent money on a plugin instead of using free ones" aka decent care when it comes to usage and updates. Not guaranteed, just... if it's paid and still being worked on, you should get it. You bought using it from them.
If we ok this; it opens the door for a lot of people to re-charge full price with every update, even if it's a forced update due to minecraft itself being updated. It gives devs zero responsibility to make sure minecraft doesnt drop an update the day after you purchase and make the plugin not function, leading to you having to REPURCHASE the plugin again for the update. That's garbage.
IMO: If you don't want to do continued support for a plugin, paid or not: don't. But don't sell a product, then switch which company you sell it under and then continue working on it for a new price to consumers. That's scummy. What if you changed it to a different product?
Example: I'm an ISP. You choose to buy a modem from me that works with our service. A week into that service, we update our firmware(the plugin update) and your modem(the plugin) no longer functions with the current internet we provide (The current minecraft version) Then we offer to sell you the new modem to meet with the standard (current minecraft version) even though you're a paying customer and you purchased the ability to use our service from us. That would frustrate the crap outta me. I'd drop the service with them altogether because it would make me think they're just going to do this every time they want another influx of money and that their service won't be a good investment on money.
It's not a company change as far as I know. They moved their plugin purchase due to Spigot's restrictions on plugin pricing, and they happen to be good friends with the MythicMobs team. Also, under the hood I think this is more of a "I bought call of duty last year why should I pay for the new one this year?" situation. Two different engines, but the plugin developer still offers legacy support to ModelEngine3. They even offered discounts to people who already had MEG3
They kinda damaged their brand, I can see how mad people are that Now People might go get the "leaks" versions instead.
Sadly I shut down my server because it cost me to much and not enough players 😢

This is... stupid. Things like that have happend in the past and it always turned bad for the devs so I get they need money to continue support but going on a website that no ones realy uses and doubling the price... yeah, maybe there is changes and all of that but that dosen't excuse how much they don't respect the consumer by going that hard whit the price of the plugin. So yeah, I get why people are mad and those devs are freaking stupid. Things like that have happend in the past and it always turned bad for the devs.

Edit: The thing that make this slightly better is that in the free version of Model Engine 4, you can now add up to 12 models. In model engine 3 it was only 6 for the free version!

As a developer: MEG is a super complex project so it absolutely has the right to be a premium plugin, though what the developer did by re-selling it on another site for more than double the price is not okay...
It's not a scam but the paid plugins have become more of a nuisance than anything else, it's not only that they are paid, but most of them are closed-source which makes that the only info you have about their features is the generally bad wiki that they bring, in this case, mythicmobs already has a cost of 40$ and now plus the engine would be 80$ total and on top of that they have a store included in which they sell you more models, this is too big an investment for someone who is just starting, and too complicated for someone who has no idea how all this works, but if someone has enough knowledge or has more than 80$ to spare, he can easily pay for a plugin with all the models and functionalities he needs for that price or a little more.
