  • Linda Margetts plays Clay Christiansen’s arrangement of John Gould’s hymn-tune “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me (PILOT)” performed on the Aeolian-Skinner Organ in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square (Salt Lake City, Utah). August 30, 2023
The Reverend Edward Hopper served as pastor of the Church of Sea and Land on the Lower East Side of New York City, a church designated especially for seafaring sailors and their families. On a commission from George S. Webster, the secretary of the Seaman’s Friend Society, Hopper submitted his poem “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me,” and it was published in the Society’s magazine in 1871. Later that year, John E. Gould (1821-75)-a New York musician and hymn publisher-saw Hopper’s poem and set it to music. It was published in “The Baptist Book of Praise” in 1871.
Hopper’s lyrics for “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” were originally published anonymously, meaning that many in his own congregation didn’t know for several years that it was their own spiritual leader who had written the words of one of their favorite hymns. These seafaring men and their families understood first-hand the perils of open-sea sailing. They knew the value and necessity of an experienced ship’s pilot with a reliable “chart and compass” who could help negotiate the “tempestuous sea,” the “unknown waves” and the “rock and treacherous shoal.”
Over the subsequent century and a half, this hymn has appeared in over one thousand hymnals, and been translated into nearly forty languages.
Emeritus Tabernacle Organist Clay Christiansen published this organ arrangement of “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” in 2017 in the anthology “Eight Hymn Settings for Organ.” The arrangement is dedicated to Darwin Wolford, a retired organist and professor of music.
