  • Andrew Unsworth plays Alexander Schreiner’s arrangement of Joseph Daynes’ hymn tune “As the Dew from Heaven Distilling,” performed on the Aeolian-Skinner Organ in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square (Salt Lake City, Utah).
Joseph J. Daynes was the first official Tabernacle Organist, beginning his duties in 1867 when only sixteen years of age, just as the original version of the organ (built by the self-taught English organ builder Joseph Ridges) was completed. Daynes served as a Tabernacle Organist for 33 years, retiring in 1900. In 1882, during these years of service, Daynes composed several hymn tunes, including a musical setting of the hymn “As the Dew from Heaven Distilling” that was included in the Latter-day Saint hymnal in 1889, and has remained in constant use since that time.
The lyrics for “As the Dew from Heaven Distilling” were penned by Irish priest and prolific hymnwriter Thomas Kelly, and first appeared in 1804. It is not one of Kelly’s better-known hymns, the most popular of which include “Hark! Ten Thousand Harps and Voices” and “Look, Ye Saints, the Sight Is Glorious.” In fact, outside of Latter-day Saint worship services, this hymn is not widely known at all. And yet it has become recognized around the world as the traditional closing theme for the historic weekly radio/television broadcast by The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, “Music and the Spoken Word.”
Alexander Schreiner (1901-87), perhaps the most renowned Tabernacle Organist, was born the year after Joseph Daynes retired. In 1945, Schreiner published his arrangement of “As the Dew from Heaven Distilling,” and it is Schreiner’s version of this hymn tune that often forms the basis of subsequent organists’ improvised closing to the Tabernacle Choir’s weekly broadcast.
