Great video Chi! I don't follow trends; I've never been a fan of that catwalk runway style. Instead, I focus on creating my trends with timeless, classy outfits that never go out of fashion. I choose styles that suit my body type, and as I get older, I find myself increasingly tired of dressing up and going out. I believe that if you keep chasing trends, you may end up broke, depressed, and facing problems for yourself and those around you. Ultimately, nothing will bring you true happiness.

stirrup pants weren't really meant to show off the straps, it was the 80's (not 90's!) and the straps were useful for keeping the leggings tucked in to boots for a more sleek look - we didn't have all that 4 way stretch lycra/spandex blend happening in mass market shops just yet. We had 2 way stretch and the leg openings had to be wide enough to comfortably get your feet through them. And when you sat down there wasn't enough stretch in the fabric to account for the needed length at the knees and hips so they'd ride up and pop out of ankle and midcalf boots. Today we have plenty of 4 way stretch fabrics so the functional straps aren't necessary.

Thank you for pointing these things out. I never liked Mary Janes, they always looked too dated, too “cottagecore” for me - while flowy dresses also lool cottagecore but in a good way, I could never imagine wearing Mary Janes in a contemporary, cool way. Maybe the reason is that they don’t make me look good. Same with the barrel jeans - they just look costumy, wild wild west for me, or like they are worn out at the knee. Sure, if you’re a skinny, tall model, everything looks good on you, but for most people the shapeless clothes make them look frumpy and… well, shapeless.

I'm 58 and 5'4" on a good day. IYKYK. I don't get why women my age like Mary Jane shoes. I love to see them on younger women but because of the strap, they make older women, especially those of us who work on our feet and/or retain water, look like our feet are encased sausages.
On the topic of the leggings with the straps (I call them stirrups), one thing I discovered in the 90s was that as great as they look while work with boots, if you get the wrong size or put them on incorrectly, your feet will hurt and it will not be a good look if you are wobbling around in said pain.
I just discovered this channel today and I'm in love.

I don't think black Mary Jane's are bad for a petite, per se. As I have trouble finding pumps that fit me, they give me security and comfort. And as I mostly wear black bottoms (I'm not into beige or grey), or if it's blue jeans I only wear flares, they go along fine with my wardrobe without making me look shorter.
Slingbacks on the other hand, are a nightmare, as they always wound my heels.

If your pants cover the strap of the Mary Janes, they just look like regular shoes. I do like the extra support of that strap. And if it only shows when I'm sitting, it's not making me look awkward or ungraceful. And the only thing I like about low-rise is that they often hit right at my waist, so it's not really a low-rise. High risers hit right under my breasts! Unless I happen to find petite cut pants, which is rare.

    • @Sleepingvampires
      @Sleepingvampires 19 часов назад

Yes exactly even petite high rise go up over the bottom of my ribcage. And I agree with you on the shoes. Most of my jeans skim the top of my foot. So you don't see the strap, and I like the extra support, I have a weak ankle. I don't think mary janes cut the foot off too much like a strap that goes around above the ankle. All of my sandals have the starp below the ankle. I was trying to figure out why I had a pair of sandals I hated and it was two things the peep toe did nothing for my morton's toe, so I need to show more of my toes or have the peep located so as to not make my big toe look realy short, and it had a stap above my ankle. This resulted in a cute wedge that looked like me, but was really unflattering.

I hated low rise jeans in the 2000s. I have a loooonnng torso and carry my weight in my belly. I could NEVER wear them!

I’m not petite, I’m almost 5’6, but I love your videos Chi, they are more helpful than any other fashion advice videos. But I hate kitten heels! I just think they are ugly; does anyone else feel the same?

Stirrup pants are not a style that should have returned.

I had a pair of leggings with the stirrups back in the 80s and they were such a nuisance 😒

I wonder what Chi Li's Kibbe body type is? I often struggle to relate to what she says. I like to wear my pants long for more vertical length. But high rise jeans overwhelm me. I just end up this this huge block of fabric in the middle of my body that looks very awkward. If the zipper is short then you can't see it if a shirt covers it, which I think looks weird. Also a short zipper can make it harder to take high rise jeans on and off. High rise jeans cause me to have little torso if I tuck my shits in. I feel like I have longish legs, a short rise and a maybe a slightly shorter torso. I feel like my proportions look very natural, people often think I am a little taller than I am (63.5"). Also for my medium bone structure, very delicate shoes just don't look right on me, I need something with a bit more visual weight. I also kind of like a heeled mary jane, I don't like my ankle being cut off, but below the ankle gives a bit of extra support.
So if low rise and midrise jeans come back I am all for it. Petite high rise pants come up over my ribcage, so just no.

Ugh, I wore those leggings in the late 1980s/1990, but in Australia we called them Ski Pants. Never again haha😂

I do indeed see what “the problem is” - too many idiots following “trends” in order to present themselves as “on point”. Trends need binning, and so do those who advocate them. Most of these photographs make the people in them look completely and utterly ridiculous.

Stirrup pants are a “no. On anyone regardless of height. Barrel jeans are unflattering on anyone, but particularly bad on petites. Low-rise jeans are best left in the ‘90s.

I’m 5ft 7 and think I have proportions like a petite woman. I have a long torso and short legs, so this “new” look will look awful on me. I’m sticking to my bootleg jeans and trousers!

It’s always funny to me that people will click on a video about trends and then love to go on and on about how they don’t follow trends 😂 Then this video isn’t for you. And like it or not, trends do influence what we see in the stores so you might end up not finding the stuff you like as easily.

How come these “TRENDS” are in fashion, when no one likes them. I’m old enough to remember stretch trousers with straps under the foot. But these under shoe straps look ridiculous. Where have all the good designers gone?
