Man, this video unlocked the tap to punch for me. I was hitting stuff with the manual wheel loft. Started keeping my weight forward with the front wheel lift and that caused the "click" to happen! Thanks, Jeff!
Good morning and Happy Independence Day El Jefè!!! I made it to Griffin yesterday to salute, and pay my respects to the men and women who fought and died and gave their lives so that we can all live a free life and go build and ride the trails that we want to ride in our state parks and wooded preserves. Thank you again so so very much for putting your blood, sweat, tears, gears and brains LOL into GBP so that we all might enjoy the seeds that you sow. I can't wait to get my cardio back and drop this extra sack of potatoes LOL so that I can hit everything that you're building up without feeling like I'm going to hit the ground like a meat sack 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I learned this technique years ago through trial and error. I use it on my motorcycle too . Just like you said once learned it will be your most used move on the trail
I definitely use this technique for some rocky climbs in Sedona. Momentum and timing is everything. I feel theres always more room to improve this skill no matter how much you practice. Love your tips!
Another awesome video. It would be great to recap the proper technique at the very end of the video as a list of steps. After you have watched all the things you shouldn’t do, it would be great to review the right way to do it.
Hey..what makes you think you're in a position to be giving such advise? Like you know what you're doing?!..oh..wait..because YOU ARE THE TRAIL BOSS!! :D yeahhbuddy!!! good tips
Great video, you shoulda let me do each of the ‘before’ shots. :0. I swear I was doing them all just like you called it, Can’t wait to get my not-a-manual lift, and more action on the rear wheel lift working better for some AZ rocks on Hawes, Mormon, and National!
Hi Jeff. Thanks for another great video. I’m struggling a bit with peddling into the punch. Can do it reasonably well just coasting into it but that doesn’t work very well for uphill obstacles. Any tips on timing the pedal strokes? Are you using the drivetrain to help pop up the front wheel or is it strictly preload and lift? Thanks again for all your great mtb content
If I had known a bit of this my ribs would not be sore from my ride a few hours as I would have had a clue on what I should have been doing. I'm going to find myself a log for the back yard and we will become best friends or worst enemies.
Great vid as usual Jeff! A couple of questions: 1) is a punch the same thing as a bump jump? 2) Does this work at higher speeds? For example, going down hill and there is a log pile. At slow speeds, I can easily get over it, but higher speeds gets me nervous about getting bucked and otb.
Not really, I'm going to do a bump jump video, that move requires you to push hard through your feet and drive the bike into the obstacle, this is quite a bit different. The Punch is really a slow to medium speed move, not great for high speed.
Am I right in thinking another way to look at this is that it's basically a bunny hop except you use the obstacle to help lift your wheel higher and then everything else is the same?
Jeff - great stuff. The the difference re keeping weight centered vs. a manual makes a huge difference. One thing - for the front wheel lift, looks like you're including in a 1/4-turn of the cranks (like starting a half-hearted wheelie) in addition to compression lift. True?
Ha! You were wrong this time. I actually don't suck at this. But, only accidentally, because my bunny hops suck from doing it in two distinct parts. It's a really low energy way to get over anything less than a few feet high.
Interesting vid but you only point out the mistakes without emphasis on demonstrating the proper corrections, you should explain what you are doing on the bike in a linear way to know how to complete moves.🤘
Thanks! That was the point of the series, They're for people who have a basic understanding on how to do certain moves but can't quite break through. I have a comprehensive video of the Punch on my channel you can check out and see everything.
Jeff as you approach the object do you focus your eyes on the spot you want to hit with the front tire? Once you make contact how far ahead should you focus your gaze?
Jeff I usually throw in a pedal stroke to help with the front wheel lift- helps get the front wheel higher but as a result I think I need to add more umph to pushing my bar to get the rear wheel over. Also I think I am veeery guilty of placing my front wheel on top of the obstacle which may also being caused by the power stroke. What are your thoughts yay or nay on the pedal stroke?
Ahh memories of a Pope impersonation as I bend down and kiss the feature i was supposed to punch over... I'm better now but I do tend to run a bald rear tyre that upsklills my climbing but doesn't help much on roots etc.. Maybe I just need bigger boxing gloves.
Hey Jeffe i am trying to hop 30 inch log with a uphill aproach can nail it down hill no worries but up i have to pedal right up it and keep the front up for the other side should i be sucking the bike up and shifting my weight back once rear tyre is on the log then doing the a bit of a pedal to wheelie of the log , the log at the moment is quite grippy any tips thanks .
Yes! Sounds like a few things. Downhill logs are a little scarier because the drop on the backside is more but the hop is a little lower and you can carry speed into it better. Uphill you’re constantly slowing down so yes, gettting a little further back once you’re up there and a slight pedal will help a lot
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss thanks for the quick reply sounds like i just need more berries to carry enough speed and get the timing right funny how easy this is with a throttlle .
Hi. when I have no much speed, I do it by using the front brake. I pre -load, I press the Front Brake and I lock the wheel then I pedal and I leave the front brake. The Front wheel "explodes" high and I can pass the obstacles. Is it wrong? Cheers
I'm guilty of placing my wheel on top too much. Thanks for the tips.

Awesome! Great to hear John!
I've been wanting to learn this move but I'm starting to get the impression you think I suck at everything 😉.
Ah! I've been missing the technique of shifting your weight forward by slowing your bike down with a lower front wheel placement. Awesome tip!
Sweet! Glad that helped!

I learned this move almost 30 years ago from a Ned Overend book (that's all we had back then :P ) and it's a great one!
Awesome tip. I am going to practice this today, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for checking it out!

Great tutorial! Those Reeb bikes look awesome!
I hit my chainring trying to hop over a log yesterday lol. This video is just in time. Very helpful. Thank you, Jeff
!
Wouldn't it have been just in time if you saw it BEFORE you hit your chain ring? Sounds more like it was a little too late.
Happy Independence Day everyone! 🇺🇸

I have a video on this on my channel. It’s one of my most viewed. Check it out!
Ok . . . now I have something else to try when I head out this weekend. Great breakdown Jeff.
Thanks for the great hints...really helped
Yes,Boss…!!!
Good video bubba! You explained it so well! Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for checking it out
Very helpful video with simple explanation. Jeff always makes things simple
Already subscribed! Jeff. Now I just need more practice to be the BoSs
I suck at most things except endurance...keep these videos coming so I can learn to be better
Thanks TB!!! 👊🏽
Thanks. Love these instructional tip videos you have been putting out!
Thanks Dave, have you seen them all?
Yes, I catch all your stuff when it comes out. Following the pros really helps when trying to dial in new moves. Really appreciate the content.

Logs and rocks usually punch me when I try to punch them over
awesome coaching 💪
Thank you!

Next also me in Friday Fails
thank you for this one... learned two things I was doing wrong

It’s VERY similar
...and you approach at a slower speed.

The pedal stroke is not necessary in every situation but I just do it if I have it because I like the timing it gives me
I was wondering that too, but I was afraid to comment as I suck at everything!
@@winnguyen443 Billy - I doubt that, since you're apparently very observant!
Great music
You make it look easy. You must have a core like a nuclear reactor 💥
Ha! You were wrong this time. I actually don't suck at this. But, only accidentally, because my bunny hops suck from doing it in two distinct parts. It's a really low energy way to get over anything less than a few feet high.
Definitely, that’s the whole point. Conserve energy and jump high stuff!

Jeff as you approach the object do you focus your eyes on the spot you want to hit with the front tire? Once you make contact how far ahead should you focus your gaze?
Since I only do this slow to medium speed it’s not hard to look far enough ahead. Maybe about a bike length or two?
Love the videos, but as a suggestion, normalize your volumes. Your voice is really low volume, but the sound effects are obnoxiously loud.

Is this the best technique for clearing an unstable fallen branch? (gap underneath)

Worked great, I just punched a carton of smokes!
without leaving his armchair.. q8)
Do you have to be clipped in to do the Punch or can you do with flat pedals??
You can do it with either.
How do I lift up/jump with the back tire during the punch without separating my feet and pedals when using flats instead of being clipped??
