No Gi Rolling With My 140lbs White Belt (Keeping A Constant Flow)

  • In today’s video I show narrated roll with one of my White Belts during one of my no gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes. I did this video in response to some messages I’ve received about doing a narrated roll and also about how I “take it easy” on some of my White Belts during rolling. This video will give you an example of how I like to roll with many of my less experienced training partners.
In the video you’ll see me exchanging movement with John. While I do roll really hard sometimes and give no space, I find that this type of rolling has a lot of benefits.
    1. It allows me a chance to practice moves, techniques and ideas in live situations during BJJ training without the threat of being destroyed if I make a mistake.
    2. It allows my partner with less experience to engage and try their own techniques out.
    3. By focusing on constantly moving I improve my scrambling ability and even my cardio for rolling.
    4. Another side benefit is that from a coaching stand point I get to feel what my students are up to and what could be useful to teach them in the future.
Over the years it’s valuable to learn how to shift your mindset and physical aggression into different gears. If you’ve watch my rolls in competition then you know I can “turn it on” when needed. But I don’t need to access that level of aggression everyday.
I hope that whether you’re new or more experienced that this video is useful to you and your training.
    Thanks for watching!

Exactly! A lot of white belts won't let you play around like this (especially if they are big and strong). They want to power through the whole roll and explode out of things instead of using technique.

So I joined the weight gym next door. Been going for almost a year and my legs are stronger. Just worried about my shoulders as they ache every night. I think the best thing about this video is that the White Belt is working for submissions, trying to escape and countering. It allows Chewy to work on his B or C game. Often, when I roll with newer white belts, they hold on for dear life and if they are strong everything is a bench press or power move. I have to spend a lot of time stapling them down and holding the dominant position. Kudos to the White Belt for allowing both of you to work.

I really appreciate that you made this video! I am a white belt with around 6 months of consistent experience and I’m currently deployed in Iraq. We have a small group that gets together for bjj training a few nights during the week. The amount of people that show greatly varies along with everyone’s experience level. The last training session I attended consisted of a very new white belt and myself. I am by no means in a position to give instruction however, I do feel that for my time on the mat I have a developed a decent game and feel confident in it. I put a lot of effort into learning and improving my Jiu-Jitsu. As the session went on we did some basic drills and began to roll. It was clear to me that he had very little live rolling experience, so I just tried to focus on my defense and positioning. I would try to coach him along in areas were I myself had issues in the past. It was hard because I felt like I didn’t have the right words to explain why certain things work but could demonstrate them. I think you brought up very good points on keeping the movement flowing and I now feel like I am better equipped for these situations. Thank you again this was very helpful.

Thanks for the great video Chewy, I actually think I can do this both ways. I'm a big strong white belt (about 1 year in), so when I roll with a white belt who is, say, 140 pounds, I could give them space and work on floating from position to position instead of just smashing in side control or mount all the time, and when I'm rolling with some of the purple belts and black belts who can kill me, I can work on moving constantly and trying to scramble more.

This is basically also my current mindset. I have been training two years now once a week, i am two stripe white belt. I am learning this mindset from rolling with brand new students, even the higher belts. I am already looking back at how I was when I started, sometimes still roll with the wrestling street fighter mentality but overall learning how jui jitzu really makes you think during rolling more than other grappling. I have been playing the foot game as we call it, with my big brother Trippy since i am 6 or 7 years old.. Basically we'd heal hook the crap out of eachother until the other submits, says Matay. Lol You really would have liked him bro. Anywho i have decided to chill, use this mindset of rolling for position over submission to improve my game because always going for the win is a distraction, or can be. Just felt like sharing. Ps. I am a fan for life, have been watching your videos, a few others to improve my game since day one of my official Bjj training. Best wishes

This was great going to ask my coach to do something like this. I think I could learn a lot with this type of thing.

Thanks for showing and explaining such a great example of Flow Rolling! I try to do this all the time at my gym, but a lot of the new guys and even some of the upper belts just want to smash face as soon as we start going, so it can be tough as a blue belt to get a white belt to open up to more movement without giving up dominant position. Often, I end up putting my partner in guard and gas him out enough to the point where I can start flow rolling and he doesn't have the energy anymore to try and smash through

Chewy loved this video. Question for you: what's the knee-pad that you're using? I need one for myself as well. Cheers!

It's a Cliff Keen I believe. Was tight at first and had to break it in. Worked great after.
