  • In this talk, held in person and recorded on Oct. 19, 2023 in Kane Hall at the University of Washington in Seattle, Steven Simon, Visiting Professor of Practice in Middle East Studies at the UW Jackson School, gives historical context to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. Director of the Jackson School, Danny Hoffman, provides opening remarks and Jackson School Professor Resat Kasaba, an expert on the Middle East, introduced the speaker and served as the discussion moderator.
    About the speaker: Steven Simon joined the Jackson School in autumn 2023 following a prolific career in government, private industry, and academia. Simon served in the National Security Council during the Obama and Clinton administrations. These assignments followed a 15-year career at the U.S. Department of State. He is the author of award-winning books on the Middle East, and he frequently appears in the media.
    The event was sponsored by the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, Middle East Center, Center for Global Studies and the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of Washington.
