    Am a Nigerian and I have been in US for more than 4 years and I hate the fact that people still don't understand me sometimes when I speak. I have an accent + we use the British pronunciation just like the military example you did so most times at my university, I always avoid classes that would require presentation. Am always terrified. What if none understand what am saying lol. This lesson helps a bit. Thanks

Oh no that's not how you say it, like wtf 🙄 I have an accent and I'm from a different place. Some people try to bash you and think that you're uneducated just because your pronunciation is different. I so hate it

    I have been in the US for over 50 years and I would say pronunciation is the hardest part to achieve when learning the English language or any other language for that matter but like you said shadowing is key. I can speak English, Spanish fluently and now I am learning Korean and yes again pronunciation is the hardest to achieve. That's my Trilingual Life!

    As an American, pretty much every state has its quirks, except Ohio, in Ohio we have an accent which is the child between the North and the South. Ohioans naturally flip flop from North to South. It's cool because we can communicate with both sides in their natural accent XD

    • @ericbarlow6772
      @ericbarlow6772 5 лет назад +1

      Jusuf Kovacevic if the accent is non-rhotic it would substitute for an R. Since American English accents tend to be rhotic, it wouldn't equate to a R. This is something you will just have to train your brain in recognizing.

    • @nuviaerivez5876
      @nuviaerivez5876 4 года назад +7

      No, only young girls and boys who have poor and limited vocabulary say "like" after every 3 to 4 words. They have no clue how to substitute it for more meaningful words. To fix this, simply start reading more or start listening to news reporters to learn how to speak clear standardize American English. This is possible believe me, I am full blooded Mexican. If I can do it, so can you.

      REhab Ali same

    • @kathyh.1720
      @kathyh.1720 4 года назад +4

      You're hearing the "t" changing to your "r" because it's not technically a "d" sound. It's actually what is called a "tap" in phonetics. Some languages use a tap to make the "r" sound, so maybe in your language, the "r" is made as a tap. That's how it's made Spanish. While the rolled "r" in Spanish is at the beginning of words or else is spelled with a double "rr" [as in "perro"], the tap is spelled with a single "r" [as in "pero"]. That tap sound is the true sound in American English that is made by a "t" or "d" or "tt" or "dd" when it comes between two vowel sounds (as in "water" and "radio" and "bottle" and "ladder"). If you know how to make that tap sound, then use it. For those people who don't know the tap sound, then the "d" is better than the "t".

      "R" is hard between languages. I am a native English speaker. I have managed the French "r", but not yet Spanish "r". And I know foreigners have trouble with English "r."

    • @stevenhs8821
      @stevenhs8821 6 лет назад +1

      English vowels very complicated (and I am American). They are natural for me, but make no sense at all from spelling. Intonation also. My father was Chinese. He could never pronounce "executive" correctly even after living in the USA for 50 years. Not only are vowels complicated, but then there are so many different dialects. I have difficulty with various English accents. I travelled to West Virginia, USA, only 200 miles from my hometown and I could barely understand the local speech. There people pronounced "island" as "allen" the boy/man's name. I was totally confuse. If 200 miles can make that much of a difference, what hope does a foreign language speaker have?
