Hello, congrats for your work. I bought the same radio in a second hand shop. They didn't know if it was working. At home, I tried and everything was OK. Appearance like new! The most incredible is that I paid 40€ for this beauty! One question : the magic eye m34 is a lot dimmer that a new one. I found on ebay a replacement em34 v14 Mullard magic eye . Is it the same that the original one?
Thats a really great job you're doing there. Great attention to detail. Looking forward to part 3. Are the tweeters working on yours? If not then they can be repaired rather than replacing them.
Hello SwingBand and thank you for the kind words. To answer your question, no the electrostats were quite dead and I ended up installing modern tweeters as I will demonstrate in a later episode. Yes in theory those tweeters can be fixed, but in practice after attempting it on 4 of those in the past 2 years, I never got them going again. The sprayed metallize solution wears off with time and high voltage. I tried de-oxing them to no avail as there was so little conductive coating left to begin with. This being said i bought 2 different ones to put on the Blaupunkt Riviera i also restored last summer. I don't know from which radio they came from or what brand they are, but the conductive coating was way thicker and still there, so they work and sound great. But that's just my experience, maybe i did something wrong, but i do know, even in good condition they are really weak and are barely audible in the mix. Of course i still kept them and might open them up for inspection later on, but for the moment i'm happy with the tweeters swap.
Really great job 👍
Thank you Manuel for once it wasn't too strenuous to clean this one, it just takes time and patience.
