THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS TUTORIAL I bought a sewing machine a year ago and I did everything the manual told me to do and my dumb self thought it was broken but no I was just not paying attention
I have this machine and by and large it is pretty decent - it has real issues with stretchy fabrics like elastic, it doesn't like when you fold over and try to do 6 layers of tightly woven quilting cotton for an edge - it will almost always get stuck on that, the feed dogs are just not powerful enough to move the fabric through - I recommend using a walking foot if you have to do anything with a folded edge of more than 4 layers of fabric. Super easy to thread, quiet, otherwise pretty nice basic machine.
i haven’t been able to find a good tutorial for the questions i had on this machine, & you went above and beyond, thank you so much!! you are AMAZING for this!! :,)
I just recently purchased this machine and I love it ! I found that the piece in front under the bobbin (where you make it a free arm ) can hold your accessories like bobbins etc. This was a big switch from my Vintage Kenmore 158.6410 model made in Japan and all metal. Happy Sewing !!!

I’ve been using the Australian variant of this machine for 10 years. Once you get to know this machine, you can do anything on it, I have different presser feet for it and not only do I make clothes for my daughter, myself and my family, I also make handbags and purses, I have made quilts, hats, doll clothes, modern cloth nappies/diapers the list goes on! The fabrics I’ve sewed at least includes many different knits and wovens, denim, vinyl, waterproof canvas, pul etc. As I already stated, once you get to know this machine, you will love it!
Thanks for giving us the demonstration. My puppy dog thanks you I'm sure. Yes I liked your demonstration. I liked, I subscribed and rang the bell too. See you in your next video. After I had my stroke I thought because I couldn't use my left hand that my designing clothes was over but with a lot of practice I was able to retrain myself to do most of the tasks. Never give up. Not ever!
Hi! Thank you so so much for this tutorial. It makes it so much easier watching you and following your instructions rather than reading the book and looking at the pictures. You did a great job.
I'm tired of taking my pants/jeans into the seamstress, its getting super costly, I was considering a decent sewing machine & I'm so glad I saw your review ; ) It was awesome thanku for your info & demonstration ✌🏽

I love it! Thank you so much for this tutorial and testing this awesome inexpensive machine. I took my Brother Project Runway to the shop the other day and they told me two to three weeks and it broke my heart. After going thru withdrawals, I thought I'd look at the sewing dept at my local Walmart. They had a few of higher priced ones that I didn't want to invest in, but at the end of the shelf was one single pretty light blue Brother LX3817A for 76.00! I thought I'd try it so when I got home , your video is the first that came up on RUclips. I must say that your excitement re the capability of this machine reminds me of me when trying something that surprises me in a good way. Thank you again for this....God bless!
Thank you! I have a Shark Euro Pro X Intelli-Sew with all the bells and whistles and electronic backstitch and needle placement (and that’s probably the problem, it’s too technological). It’s from 2006 and it was my mom’s. It has 66 different stitches that I’m never going to use, can’t find the manual and it finally “crapped the bed”. Too many problems to count and since I’m just a casual sewer I’m looking for a whole new SIMPLE machine. This is the one I had my eye on because of how simple it is, but still does lots of things! Thank you thank you THANK YOU 😊
Awesome thank you so much! I think I am going to buy this for my first machine! Do you have any experience or an opinion on the Brother XM2701? Nearly the same price, I found it for $10 more than the LX3817...
I enjoyed your videos! I bought a mini sewing machine a couple of weeks ago just to make masks and enjoyed sewing so much that I bought the LX3817A which I guess the color is the only difference between yours and mine. I need hemming lessons and alterations on armholes. I’m petite so alterations are a must for me. I would love to see how to cut patterns and sew with this machine. I’m a beginner so I take what I can!
I just ordered this sewing machine online (since ALL stores are sold out!) and Im a beginner but you just got me so excited knowing I can do it too! Great tutorial!
That machine is cheap and I am surprised that it was able to sew through that many layers of denim and did most of the other material as well. I just purchased a new Singer model 2277 sewing machine and have to get extra feet, needles, and other supplies I will need for the machine along with plenty of thread as well. The Brother did a better job than I would expect it to do considering the price.
thank you so much. I didn't know the trick for the stretching material. Is the one I've been using. Well, cause I am a beginner at sewing. But so far I have create baby bibs, baby pillows, burping cloths and skirts. And I've learn watching tutorials on youtube.
Thank you so much, Yolanda! I would love to offer videos about learning to sew; right now I am busy teaching my own girls and upkeep on a small farm. Maybe in the future I could. I hope you are able to find other great teachers here on RUclips to teach you. Happy Sewing!!!
I just bought this machine today, I’d call myself an experienced beginner but I’m not sure what I’m doing incorrectly with this machine. No matter how I adjust the tension, the threading is just all jacked up
Either you did not follow the threading map correctly or you have the bobbin in upside down or bass-akwards, or you have two different types of threads in the machine, or you've jacked around too much with your tension!
Hi! Thank you so much for this awesome review! I have never used a sewing machine, but I can’t wait to get one that is good and inexpensive to sew paper crafts. Do you think this would be good for that? Please let me know or any other sewing machine recommendation I would really appreciate it. Thank you. Hugs from Miami.
It depends on how often and frequently you want to craft. If you intend on spending say 20+ hours a week sewing, I would go for an older good sewing machine that you might find at a sewing machine repair shop used. If you just are going to sew here and there a bit, this machine will be just fine for you. Hope that helps. Happy Sewing!
Thank you so much I am a beginner in sewing and I want to make my own costume! I am 13 so I am starting off young but I have help! And I can learn alot from others
It does 8 layers of denim today, but will it do it tomorrow, next week next month etc? It is probably to much strain for the machine over long term. Great review though.
You want a machine to be able to sew 8 layers of denim so that you'll be able to sew over several flat felled seams, the machine isn't gonna be sewing 8 layers of denim together constantly
I took my first sewing lesson today on a fancier Brother. Can you control the speed with the foot pedal? I'm totally new to sewing. Thank you so much for this review!
I bought my granddaughter one of them little $22 sewing machines operated by battery and I was surprised how great the stitching was yes it's plastic but for a little girl 9 years old this machine makes a Perfect Stitch I made a minor adjustment on the needle thread and the bobbin and if so just like a professional machine Granite it won't last forever but for 22 bucks and a little girl it works great
I’ve been researching and I keep coming back to this machine. I have no clue what I am doing. I want to make small pouches for holding various items and cards.
I just purchased this today to replace my old (emphasis on OLD) singer sewing machine that just clonked out on me. I can't wait to start using it! Thanks for posting this video :) Would you recommend this machine for paper crafting as well? such as sewing on scrapbook pages
I had this machine. I sew for a living and give my machine a real workout. I was very satisfied. I used it every day for a few years. It was versatile and did a good job. I loved some of the stitches. It was my favorite after buying more expensive machines. It finally started locking up while doing backstich and it was done. Overall it was a good buy.
I just bought this machine, it's now the 3817A, and I really love it. Getting back into sewing and didn't want to spend much right now. Question: Can you free style to finish a small quilt with this machine?
If you can put the feed dogs down then, yes, you can. If there is not a way to put the feed dogs down then you will have to cover them up which might be more difficult than it is worth.
I brought one at Walmart and went I turn on is not working even not any sound at all , I go back to Walmart to change the machine for a $20 more expense one Brother GX37 and is good one but I am a beginner so i am not familiar with Brother Brand. So I hope I learn soon to know my machine and I so exited about it.
I've had this machine for about a week... This as basic as it gets... Great for basic sewing... I do hate the plastic lever & the small piece of metal as a screwdriver
Okay, I am about to get this now. it's on sale, I want to put ribbon on bottom of tulle and make small baby blankets. can I achieve that with this machine? Thank you
I have a singer but i got it as a gift. If i had to buy another one i would try a Brother. I love brother products. I have a couple of their products for my crafting, a label maker and a die cutter😄
I've never sewed with a machine before but I'm thinking of getting one. It's a JX1420 brother from Walmart. Its $109. Not sure I'll get an answer before I pull the plug and order it.
I bought the brother project runway model and I really like it. I lost the instructions. I'm trying to understand the book in Spanish. Will you show us how to make buttonholes. I got my machine 5 years ago for $129.99 at Walmart.
I actually bought two of these machines and use them for a sewing class that I teach. They are simple and smooth running machines and haven't failed yet despite some rather clumsy handling from my students. Also I paid 57$ each at Walmart for mine too though they were reconditioned new machines.
I bought the cheapest machine Walmart had to see just what it would do. I was surprised at how good it was!!! Do you own this machine???? Do you like it???
The Blue Keystone love it!
Is this machine good to sew ribbon trim to tutus?
@@danielaesquivel7931 Yes, I would put the ribbon on the bottom where the feed dogs are with the tulle on top to help feed in evenly.

Either you did not follow the threading map correctly or you have the bobbin in upside down or bass-akwards, or you have two different types of threads in the machine, or you've jacked around too much with your tension!
Very helpful.. so this machine didnt need a bobbin to be put in too?
I have that one but lost the clear top cover.from the bobbin i had to order and i hope it fits
I was thinking of getting a sewing machine and came upon this video. I love your personality and edits. Great work
It does 8 layers of denim today, but will it do it tomorrow, next week next month etc? It is probably to much strain for the machine over long term. Great review though.
You want a machine to be able to sew 8 layers of denim so that you'll be able to sew over several flat felled seams, the machine isn't gonna be sewing 8 layers of denim together constantly
Just bought this exact model from WalMart today, SO JUICED!!
That's awesome!!! Happy Sewing!!!
I took my first sewing lesson today on a fancier Brother. Can you control the speed with the foot pedal? I'm totally new to sewing.
Thank you so much for this review!
Thank you for doing this detailed review...really appreciate it.
You are so welcome!!! Happy Sewing!!
Thank you for this video I literally just purchased this one today!!! Cant wait to get home and try it out
Denim that is exactly what I wanted to see thank you so much!!! Do you know if they have other colors I don't really like the blue? ♥️😷🙏🥀
That is the only color I have seen. Happy Sewing!
I bought my granddaughter one of them little $22 sewing machines operated by battery and I was surprised how great the stitching was yes it's plastic but for a little girl 9 years old this machine makes a Perfect Stitch I made a minor adjustment on the needle thread and the bobbin and if so just like a professional machine Granite it won't last forever but for 22 bucks and a little girl it works great
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I just bought this sewing machine & your video helps.
I’ve been researching and I keep coming back to this machine. I have no clue what I am doing. I want to make small pouches for holding various items and cards.
It will do a fine job to start with. If you find that you are making 100 a week on a regular basis; then upgrade. Happy Sewing!
I got the this same machine on overstock for $59.99,i love it.
I just purchased this today to replace my old (emphasis on OLD) singer sewing machine that just clonked out on me. I can't wait to start using it! Thanks for posting this video :) Would you recommend this machine for paper crafting as well? such as sewing on scrapbook pages
I don't do much papercrafting, so I don't know. Sorry!
oh my gosh, you are so great! This was so stinking helpful - I giggled through the entire video, too 💗
I had this machine. I sew for a living and give my machine a real workout. I was very satisfied. I used it every day for a few years. It was versatile and did a good job. I loved some of the stitches. It was my favorite after buying more expensive machines. It finally started locking up while doing backstich and it was done. Overall it was a good buy.
Thank you for sharimg
I make masks with mine. Love it
I just bought this machine, it's now the 3817A, and I really love it. Getting back into sewing and didn't want to spend much right now.
Question: Can you free style to finish a small quilt with this machine?
If you can put the feed dogs down then, yes, you can. If there is not a way to put the feed dogs down then you will have to cover them up which might be more difficult than it is worth.
@@thebluekeystone7628 thank you!
I think on most machines if you select for darning then the dogs go down
I brought one at Walmart and went I turn on is not working even not any sound at all , I go back to Walmart to change the machine for a $20 more expense one Brother GX37 and is good one but I am a beginner so i am not familiar with Brother Brand. So I hope I learn soon to know my machine and I so exited about it.
Glad you found something that works for you!!! Happy Sewing!
Thank you for your detailed explanation. I just bought mine at walmart.
The threading the needle part is what I needed... 👀
I got mine on amazon the SAME brand and SAME thing on amazon for 57$ so not the cheapest also love the background
ya the refurbished version is $57 on amazon
Yes I love the background too.
I just ordered mine!
Says the cheapest at walmart not amazon.
She said the Cheapest at WALMART,, Not Amazon! LOL
I just got the same machine today and your review is great thanks
Setting up a brother SE1900 from turning it on to to do bobbin, thread machine,
I've had this machine for about a week... This as basic as it gets... Great for basic sewing... I do hate the plastic lever & the small piece of metal as a screwdriver
This was the sewing machine my mom bought and I couldn't stop playing around and ruining when I was younger
I owned one its great. I got it for a birthday present
Thanks I'm going to get a
SQ9310 Brother sewing machine for $180 it used to be $400 it's on sale at Walmart. thanks 😊😊✌️
As a student this is very helpful thank you! :D
Okay, I am about to get this now. it's on sale, I want to put ribbon on bottom of tulle and make small baby blankets. can I achieve that with this machine? Thank you
Im in the middle of your video and when you said button holes I was like PPPLLLEEEAAASSSEEEEE
I bought a nice Brothers at Wal MART FOR $40 and is better than any Singer machine. In fact I will not waste my money on a Singer
I am so glad you enjoy your machine!!! Sew on!!!
I have a singer but i got it as a gift. If i had to buy another one i would try a Brother. I love brother products. I have a couple of their products for my crafting, a label maker and a die cutter😄
You cut out the part i needed help with the most .. i have no idea how to thread this thing lol
Just Bleu She did that at the beginning of the video.
I've never sewed with a machine before but I'm thinking of getting one. It's a JX1420 brother from Walmart. Its $109. Not sure I'll get an answer before I pull the plug and order it.
I know nothing about sewing. I need to know. Should I buy this if I definitely need a straight stitch to stretch?
What is considered the basting stitch on this machine? Thank
You!!
I bought the brother project runway model and I really like it. I lost the instructions. I'm trying to understand the book in Spanish. Will you show us how to make buttonholes. I got my machine 5 years ago for $129.99 at Walmart.
Buttonholes are covered on the Part 2 of this video.
How to do pico with this michine
Your making me wanna get it!!!!
I actually bought two of these machines and use them for a sewing class that I teach. They are simple and smooth running machines and haven't failed yet despite some rather clumsy handling from my students. Also I paid 57$ each at Walmart for mine too though they were reconditioned new machines.
Good to know!!! Happy Sewing!!
How is the machine holding up??? i'm planning of buying one in few days. thanks
I don't sew with it on a daily basis. I am just recommending it to people to start out with.
