The Marvin Gaye version was all about the man's stellar vocals, The Funk Brothers notwithstanding. But the CCR version is all about the music, especially the full on version from the album. And of course John Fogarty's excellent singing.
Smokey Robison & the Miracles did the original version ,Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded an up beat funky version that was released as a single first ,Marvin Gaye had the big pop soul hit & CCR did the definitive rock blues version . A top class song sung by top class artistes .
When I hear this song now, I think raisins, lol. Also check out Run Through the Jungle, Suzie Q, Up Around the Bend, Who'll Stop the Rain, Traveling Band, Lodi, Commotion, Cotton Fields, Green River, Proud Mary. Songs that they have already covered: Fortunate Son, Born on the Bayou, Bad Moon Rising, Lookin' Out My Back Door, Night Time is the Right Time, Down on the Corner, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, I Put a Spell On You
The California Raisins! Lol. Forgot all about those guys. I would add Midnight Special, Long as I Can See the Light, Hey Tonight, Pagan Baby, Tombstone Shadow... well, I could go on but I'd end up naming every song.
CCR has always been one of my favorite groups. They don't have a bad song! John Fogerty has one of the most unique & recognizable voices around. All their songs are great. You guys have done a few of there songs already but lots left such as Proud Mary", "Lodi", "Green River", "Commotion", "Cotton Fields", "Midnight Special", "Travelin' Band", "Who'll Stop The Rain", "Up Around the Bend", "Run Through The Jungle", "Long As I Can See the Light", "Suzie Q", "I Put A Spell On You", "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" etc.
I realy loooove the both of you. I'm an old girl, pushing 60, musiclover to bits, all styles, as long as it good. You seem to appreciate music for what it is. All styles, all timeframes. I truely thank you for that. And, man: you realy enrich yourselfs in the process. Groove on! Deepest symphathy, Nancy, Amsterdam 🎵🤘❤
So damn nice🎶🎸🥁 I remember in the early 70's street dances in my neighbourhood, where they would close the street off and pipe in CCR, and other great music! I just love you 2 and your take on this great music of my youth🎶🎶
Oh oh yeah CCR rocked that song. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕 gosh I forgot how much I loved that song. Thanks for playing the very talented CCR. Now I know what they sound like without being stoned. 🤩🤪😊
That was the version they used to play on the radio. I hate it when they cut it like that. This is the short version, you got to check out the long version. Rodger Troutman from Zapp has a pretty good cover song for I Heard it Through the Grapevine. One of my favorite songs to dance to but they had many of them.
Marvin had it 1st but didn't record it but Gladys Knight did in 1968 and had a hit with it then Marvin released his version and it went to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Then CCR did their version in 1970. At first I was wondering why but after buying Cosmos Factory and listening to it I was impressed.
Gladys Knight and the Pips first made this song famous (this song has an interesting history) even though they were the second group to record it. Marvin Gaye actually recorded his version just before Gladys Knight, but it wasn't released until a year after her version went number one on the R&B chart. I think this was in the late 60s. But Gaye's version was later hailed as a soul classic and i think it made Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs of all time. Creedence released its rendition of the song in 1970--it was the longest version by far (something like 11 minutes long).
Berry Gordy actually shelved that song twice. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles recorded it first but Berry Gordy did not like their version at all. Then Marvin Gaye recorded it but again Berry Gordy wasn't sold on it and shelved it again. He then gave it to Gladys Knight & the Pips who made it a big hit. Then Marvin Gaye's version was released later on and of course another big hit.
Never a bad song from them. You should really hear the story of what happened to John Fogarty and how things went bad for him, but he came out good in the end. He got the rights to his music.
BJ and Asia are very cool! Asia is very pretty and that smile is infectious. Really like the way both of you interact with each other. Keep the videos coming.
CCR has been an unending favourite of mine since I heard them play "Bad Moon Rising" back around 1968-69 when I was in grade school. Love me some CRR! 💘👌🎸🎸🎸
The both of you do such great reactions to songs that came from my youth, it takes me right back to those days. I thank you for helping me feel young again!
Every time you do CCR I say it; one of my favorites of ALL time. The 60's and 70'. John Fogarty is the goat!!!!! Love watching you groove like we all use to.................and still do along with you..
The only record album my Dad ever bought me on his own was CCR. My Daddy was really into music, all music, all his life. We had a radio playing all the time when my Dad was home. What a gift to give...not just the CCR album, but the love of music. (PS I'm almost 70!, so this was a LONG time ago!)

CCR throwing some swamp into Marvin's soul...lol....love both versions of this song. Usually the covers don't come close, but this one was solid as can be. Would've been fun to hear Marvin sing a verse or two with them live : )
@@anneridge9800 Originally written by Whitfield and Strong - for Motown. The CCR version was a little later, and so good, it's an easy mistake to make.
"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is a song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. The first recording of the song to be released was produced by Whitfield for Gladys Knight & the Pips and released as a single in September 1967.
(Procession & The Story in Your Eyes - The Moody Blues.) - When the album came out I was advised to listen to the 1st two songs together as "Procession" sounds like an introduction to "The Story In Your Eyes". - As you can see others thought so too and posted them together. "Procession" takes you around the world in different genres and in time. Then you ROCK to The Story In Your Eyes". - "Procession" puts the mood in Moody Blues.

If you read John Fogerty’s book, he talks about recording this track. He heard Marvin’s version in a department store. The store had the speakers separated. One in the back and one in the front. John was in the back of the store, and heard it on the speaker in that area. On that speaker, he mainly heard Marvin’s voice. He wasn’t a fan of Marvin’s earlier stuff, because being a rocker, he thought it was too produced and slick. But hearing this isolated track he could zone in on his voice and notice how powerful it was. He got together with the band. He made the piano riff from Marvin’s version into a guitar riff. It was then he realized he could make it into a jam. The album track was an eleven minute long jam.
Man, you should have done tbe long version. You don't know what you missed. So, make it up by doing their live version of I put a Spell on You. Its done at Woodstock in '69. Its awesome.
John Fogerty is the lead vocalist and the lead guitarist, his brother Tom Fogerty also plays guitar, Stu Cook is bass and Doug Clifford is drums and that's CCR, a band mostly known for their swamp-rock music and the legendary vocals of John Fogerty. You'd be hard pressed to find a bad song by them, I know I haven't heard one. You've barely scratched the surface of what's there, in store for you, if you continue down the rabbit hole. Don't worry, any song you pick by them, you'll love. Here's a list for ya, "Run Through The Jungle", "Commotion", Fortunate Son", "Travelin' Band", "Sweet Hitch-Hiker", "Green River", "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary", "Up Around The Bend" and "Who'll Stop The Rain", now that's a lot, but there's still more, of course. This was so freakin' awesome, glad you decided to do CCR's version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", but, maybe you'll try to listen to the longer version of it, there's lots more music involved, really cool.

Can't go wrong with any of those acts. They all brought something great to the song. I prefer CCR personally because of the guitar but I like em all.
If I have to point to my favorite Grapevine it is my very first listen to it and that was the inimitable Gladys Knight and the Pips
