  • HTC VIVE has just announced their latest VR headset, and it's actually aimed at a wide group of consumers this time. It's not like their previous release, the VIVE Flow, which you could NOT use for much except casual entertainment
    This is the VIVE XR Elite. A fully self-contained standalone VR headset that supports 6DoF tracking controllers. It's HTC's first consumer standalone that you could see as a competitor of the Quest 2, Quest Pro, and Pico 4.

    As a dev, I make my work for the widest audience with the least amount of friction possible so that means I only target whatever has the highest marketshare which for VR is just Quest and PC SteamVR. If companies want me to port, they have to make it suuper easy with just an open XR export button (like Pico does) and free hardware kits (like windows MR did). Otherwise, it's a no-go. Also their good rep with devs was kinda messed up with the release of the cosmos as the controller mappings were near impossible to use with unreal.

    • @ChrisM541
      @ChrisM541 Год назад

      That makes good sense. Where do you see foveated rendering heading, and in what timescale?
      If my understanding is correct (interested in tech though now working in computing), we're ideally looking at providing the best resolution for the lenses only at an area around your eyes focal point on the screen/frame. As we head out of this high res circle the rendering would gradually lower in resolution, ideally exactly as you see when reading this text, so that CPU/GPU rendering horsepower is reduced towards the periphery of that focal point. This could be fine tuned and tested by comparing looking at the original full high res image with the foveated rendered image, allowing the user to switch between the two renders. Then, you'd play about with the central circle size and the de-resolution method and intensity as the periphery is reached. To further optimise, both central circle/shape and deres effect could be dynamic, depending on the game/media content at that time.
      Today, we have various HDM's offering 'eye tracking' e.g. the expensive Varjo headsets. We also have (unsurprisingly!) Nvidia stating they already have foveated rendering through their driver (via VRSS 2). Is this not a bit misleading...I though that a fully optimised foveated pathway could only be realised if BOTH the GPU driver and game engine were involved - isn't the game engine still outputting, in high detail, it's side of the full image...wouldn't/shouldn't the game engine, ideally, be the 'real' enabler of foveated rendering? - for a single frame, what percentage of time is attributed to the game code (game engine, everything in the game loop, etc) compared to the final render in the GPU?...optimisation in the game code justified?
      A big issue with current HDM's is the small 'sweet spot' - the lenses are physically unable to display a high res image outside that central sweet spot area without severe image degradation (fix your head and move your eyes to the edge of the image), though in theory, this wouldn't stop the benefits of a working foveated rendering system?

    The headset definitely sounds like a step in the right direction for them. Hopefully they work something out to take care of the standalone library issue, as I'm with you on that. Most developers probably wouldn't "waste time" developing specifically for this, unless signs pointed to it taking off.
    On a nitpick note, however, I'm hard of hearing and I had to turn off the captions you had. I'm very grateful that you provide custom captions instead of relying on the not always reliable auto-captioning; however, your captions look like they were from an earlier script than you actually used in the video, as they say different things at times. That was distracting to me, so I had to turn them off and just listen without captioning.
    Again, I am very happy that you take the time to provide captioning in the first place, since many, many channels either rely on the auto-captioning or just don't have any in the first place. So please take this in the way it was intended. ;)

    I think this headset might become popular for some specific use-cases e.g. virtual laser tag / arcade installations. The exchangeable batteries and option to power externally will be very useful for this.
    It also looks like it has everything needed for MR (unlike the Quest Pro). What would be interesting to test is the following: Try any MR experience where you have movable objects and try placing them behind a real object. Does it properly disappear behind the real world image? The only device I had that did this well enough is the HoloLens 2 which automatically 3D scans the environment. The 3D scan is rather low poly though and any real world objects that move around take a few seconds to update within the virtual world.

    Any headset has to go through development (R&D) and manufacturing prep. This costs a lot of money (millions) and is something people seem to forget about. Do people think companies design headsets for free? From what I understand, FB/Meta as well as Pico can't produce headsets for the price they sell them for. They cover the rest of the cost by selling your personal data, which means giving up your privacy to get that lower headset cost.
    As far as I know, Vive doesn't sell your data, so the price of their headset is what it really costs to make them, which includes the cost of R&D and manufacturing. If you don't care about privacy, then let FB/Meta or Pico sell your data, so you can buy a headset at a lower price. If you want your privacy, get a Vive, but expect to pay a lot more for it. They aren't trying to rip people off. They have to pay for everything through the sale of the headset alone and thus the higher price tag.
    PC is better than stand alone right now. So until this changes, I don't care about stand alone, as the quality does not meet my expectations. As far as the Vive tech goes, I will not jump on this headset until I see how it compares to the Quest 3. That will determine if I am willing to sell my data for a Quest 3 or if the higher cost of the Vive is worth my privacy.

I really like the idea of inside out controller tracking, but all I really need is for the controllers to be tracked more than 180 degrees, for example when playing ping pong I would routinely be returning the ball from past 180 degrees, which would cause the Quest 2 to lose tracking. But there is no reason that the controllers can't be headset tracked beyond 180 degrees if the cameras are spaced properly. That being said, being able to play steam games on it over wifi with wifi6 standards supposedly providing better wifi connections for device to device, this could be the best headset on the market going forward. I would never buy a facebook headset personally, so that's not even a contender for me.

      @Serpent Yes, but it's still an add-on and not something built into the headset. It adds more price and more bulk, and most apps likely won't be built around it since it's an add-on. Every quest pro has these features built in, so developers are much more likely to build apps and experiences around these features compared to a platform where those features are just an add-on. That means it still isn't directly competing with the quest pro because the quest pro comes with those features by default and will therefore likely have more software support for those features.

XR moving forward is putting heavy emphasis on mixed reality and full facial tracking is part of that experience. You're acting like devs for the Quest line won't port to Vive. They're gonna develop where it matters and if Vive pulls it off and this headset gains a lot of popularity, devs will build for for it. This is a modular headset. It doesn't have facial tracking integrated because they wanted it as small as possible. The trackers for it aren't even bulky. The eye tracker fits inside out of the way, and the face tracker is a little USB attachment that clips to the bottom of the HMD. If you don't need it, pop it off and enjoy your compact headset. Do you have any idea how many people are interested in face tracking and would buy it right now for their headsets if they could? I talk to an insane amount of people day to day in VRChat that see my Vive Pro Eye tracking and wish they could have it too.
