  • This video documents an unforgettable day at Alpental, filled with lighthearted laughs, technical challenges, and one of the scariest runs I’ve ever faced. It’s a journey that starts with humor and ends with a sobering reminder of the mountain’s power.
The day kicked off with some comical moments I like to call "Jerrymandering"-those classic Jerry-on-the-hill mishaps, like toppling over a "Thin Cover" sign not just once, but multiple times! These funny moments set a playful tone before diving into the real challenges of the day.
I started with a warm-up on Edelweiss Bowl, where the sunny slopes softened just enough to make the icy surface more forgiving. Feeling prepared, I moved on to Felsen, the double black diamond under the new Internationale Lift, which stayed in the shade all day. Despite the icy and steep conditions, I tackled it with confidence after warming up earlier, enjoying a few technical descents.
But the real drama unfolded during the last run of the day. I decided to mix things up and venture into the unmarked terrain between Felsen and International runs. This turned out to be one of the most dangerous decisions of my life. The slope was extremely steep and coated in hard ice, offering no room for error. Any fall would have meant an uncontrollable tumble with no chance of stopping.
I had to calm myself, focus, and side-slide down the slope with painstaking precision, relying solely on the edges of my skis, which barely gripped the icy surface. It was a harrowing experience that left me shaken but also grateful for my ability to stay composed in such a dire situation.
This video captures the highs and lows of a day on the mountain-from funny, "Jerry" moments to technical descents and a truly terrifying finale. Let it be a reminder to enjoy the mountain responsibly and never underestimate its challenges, especially in icy conditions.

1:22:22 The move you execute here is a really important technique to getting down challenging terrain. Being able to side skid like a leaf is very helpful, otherwise you'd have to keep rotating the skis on a difficult slope. I'm going to share this with others to show how do that move when the slope is too hard. Thanks!

BTW, the slope before that seemed too steep to slide like that given the terrible snow/ice condition, so I was afraid I would slip and fall to my death. Now watching all this I realize that I could probably slide fine if I started sliding earlier, not trying to reach the end of the traverse with that "cavity", where my skis barely had contact with the slope.

As a Pennsylvanian, skiing on this would be better than where I live…

I feel for you. East Coast skiing is notoriously sketchy. BTW, today we've had a powder day. Just about to post a new video!

I went to upper international today and the entrance is so bad. I had to hop down narrow steps to get in. Then the far side of the bowl is frozen ice. Edelweiss was nice and soft tho.

@@SeattleDiverSkier I'm planning to. It takes me a while to process them. May I ask what video editor you use? I like your special effects

@@BlueSkiWave I film with GoPro Hero 11. I also have a 360 camera Rylo, but the batteries are not good for any freezing weather anymore, so I stick to the GoPro. BTW, I bought a wind screen, and now the sound is so much better, no loud booming of the wind. For video editing I use DaVinci Resolve Studio. I bought the paid option a couple of years ago together with a small editing keyboards (the same price as the software license was free with it). It's best of class software, and its free version is very powerful too.
