- The name “Chinese Taipei” is sure to be heard at the Olympic Games this year, just like many other international sporting events. Some may recognize this team, while others are probably confused about where to find their country on a map. This is a documentary of how the official name of Taiwan’s sports teams (OR Team Taiwan) came to be.
It all started when the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949. A series of events unfolded leading to a 1981 decision to re-name Taiwan’s sports teams as team “Chinese Taipei.” A choice with lasting repercussions that are continuously felt in Taiwan to this day.
The story behind “Chinese Taipei” and the contention surrounding an ongoing identity crisis is about much more than meets the eye. Director Garret M. Clarke conducted interviews with athletes, sports professionals, and spectators alike because it was important to hear “Taiwanese people express their opinions in their own way.”
The name “Chinese Taipei” is a struggle for political power that dictates an athlete’s right to play as much as it denies sports fans and children around the world an opportunity to connect with Taiwan. I first saw that Chinese Taipei moniker back in the early 80s while watching the Little League world series telecast. Funny, as I looked back into the early history of Little League baseball, the ROC flag and "Taiwan" was used whenever they competed at Williamsport.

I am a Taiwanese and a citizen of the Republic of China. Taiwan is the only territory owned by the Republic of China today. I will not be dissatisfied just because the name of the Republic of China has not changed. However, Taiwan now does not belong to the People's Republic of China, nor does it belong to China. I will always be proud of my country, the Republic of China, Taiwan, and proud to be a Taiwanese. I hope that one day China will stop using hegemony over Taiwan and recognize and face up to the fact that Taiwan, the Republic of China, has officially become an independent entity. Otherwise, it will always be China’s shame.

@@yen-chensu4739 我也是最近才知道，台灣人講的台獨跟中國認定的其實不太一樣。簡單來說，認為中華民國獨立於中華人民共和國的叫作華獨，認為臺灣應該脫離「中華民國」而使用新國號是台獨。但我認為這並不值得成為國內各派爭吵的議題，在國際情勢已經艱困之下，我們更應該做的是團結所有愛這個國家的人，而不是因為名義上的不同就覺得對方不愛國、不愛台灣！

It's a really good documentary film. But there's one really important fact missing, is that ''Chinese Taipei' is referred to as 'Chinese Olympic Committee (Taipei)', reflecting ROC government's stance to still claim rightful representative of China. That's why it refused to be called Taiwan in Olympic arena, the proposal was actually acceptable by PRC back then. The controversial name at least shows a historical fact, that ROC insisted to be labeled as a 'Chinese' territory.
If back in 1970s ROC accepted re-labelled as Taiwan, it wouldn't be able to claim whole China lawfully, which is no longer the political principle of ROC any more.

Taiwanese Pangcah boxer Chen Nien-Ching (陳念琴) notably said "wawa no pangcah" after winning her match. The phrase means "child of the Pangcah" and it's one of the most impressive things in recent Taiwanese sports history.
1. KMT made this mess. Being a minority, if they love China, they should move back to China.
2. Taiwanese will say they are Taiwanese if asked where they are from.
3. Chinese Taipei is like calling America, British America (or British Wash. DC).

(中文見下) Thanks a lot for the effort put into this but please allow me to point out 2 errors: (1) 02'53'' - the Chinese Civil War didn't erupt in 1945 - it had been ongoing for decades before that and culminated in the loss of the entire territory of mainland China by the ROC government. (2) 05'08' - "Taiwan" has never been expelled by the UN, it was "the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek" (UN Resolution No.2758). This is very important to clarify as it implies, despite the unlikelihood, that Taiwan should have the rights to "join" (rather than "return to" in the ROC's view) the UN.
I'd really appreciate if the voice over could be updated.
Also one recommendation if I may, 6'28'' - The speaker refers to himself as the ROC Olympic Committee so probably best to align what's shown on the screen to his own reference?

3:40 It's not true that "there can only be one team per country." British and all European countries managed to make all those teams of their colonies. As long as you are allowed to establish an Olympic Committee, you can participate in Olympic events using the name of your Olympic Committee. We were not allowed to name our Olympic Committee Taiwan or ROC when we applied for it. It's all about the IOC standing with PRC and bullies athletes from Taiwan/ROC.
Shame on IOC, while all the western countries have been promoting self-identity - let people identify as who they are. IOC rather stand with the power and $, than justice.
Many interviees misunderstood, we do NOT have to be recognized as an independent country to rename our Olympic committee. We just need to be allowed to do so by IOC.

@@orgncc 其實從二戰結束開始到今，台澎就是屬於盟軍的軍事托管區，中日和約只賦予了中華民國對台澎兩島的治權，以及台澎居民暫時的中華民國國民身份，並不包含主權轉移，當年蔣介石政府要逃來台灣的時候就曾經被美國拒絕過，但委員長不管，好真的來了，美國要求放棄金馬用台澎用台灣開一個新局，委員長也不要，造就了如此尷尬的局面，也為金馬居民帶來無盡的戰火。
好不管過去了，現在如果沒有北京武力威脅，台灣就不需要一直在統獨議題上打轉很快就能完成修法了，我個人是有信心能看到那天到來，但目前的狀況的確讓人感覺到疲憊。

我是大陆人，但是在70年代甚至90年代以前，台湾强的时候，也在欺负大陆，ROC在联合国的时候，也是这么对待大陆的，那个时候可没人可怜大陆，大家都觉得大陆咎由自取，或者说罪有应得。如今角色转变，台湾喊得很大声，但是就是不去想这个背后的原因，这个世界是有规则的，UN有自己的宪章。如果台湾人不服，就直接去当兵，去扛枪，保卫自己认为的规则和权利，而不是顾影自怜，觉得永远被打压。

However, following an intervention by the US, the Canadian government allowed the Taiwanese delegation to compete as “Taiwan” or “Formosa” and let it to use the ROC flag and national anthem.
However, the KMT government refused, insisting that the nation’s official name also be honored." ... .
When the world facing SARS pandemic, almost no country give assistance to Taiwan at that time. And WHO is not exception. Controlled by Beijing, the authorities concerned neglected all the Taiwanese health and impressed us Taiwanese with their word"Who care about you?". Since then, Taiwanese are aware that we are ignored by the international society intentionally.All we could do is figure out the best way to go through the event.
首先中华民国的人有个误解，他们认为他们想怎么样就可以怎么样。
例如中华民国宪法规定，他们是中华民国，领土是台澎金马地区和大陆地区。但是他们主观的认为他们叫台湾，并且不想承认中华民国，甚至有人倡议放弃金门领土。

几十年前，他们的总统自称：中华民国，现在他们的总统自称：中华民国台湾，他们在潜移默化的改变现状，并且慢慢的把中华民国改变为台湾，可能再过几十年，中华民国就消失了，剩下了台湾，尽管他们的宪法中依然叫中华民国，但是他们成功的从中国偷窃到了领土。
法理上领土是一个国家的主权，住在这块土地上的人只拥有使用权，但是归属权永久属于国家主权。

This is an excellent documentary. It's so much more than a story about the name and compromise Taiwan must make to be in the Olympics. I learned so much. The one crucial takeaway I have is that Taiwan is a modern democracy doing what it can to be understood, live and survive in the world. China is really, politically, and, in so many ways, living in the past; it is a dictatorship and a frightening country to live in if you have a contrary view. Taiwan is working within the restrictions of a world fearful of economic loss and dealing with a neighbourhood bully by recognising Taiwan as an independent country. The IOC has its work cut out, making a messy compromise.

Not just Chinese Taipei, but on any website where you need to fill in your country, you can't find Taiwan; instead, it's listed as 'Taiwan, China' or as a province of China. I feel very angry and sad about this. I want to proudly and loudly declare that Taiwan is a country, not a part of China.

80年次（1991）的我基本上小學還是有意無意地在學校吸收到「黨國遺毒」教育那一套，尤其社會課講歷史時。
記得陳水扁選第一任總統那屆我小二，有天班導很奇怪的突然某次上課問大家「爸爸媽媽要投1號OO的舉手？」「2號的舉手」.....「5號陳水扁的舉手」，幾乎9成舉手。小時候不清楚爸媽的投票意向，看5號舉手人多跟著舉，長大之後才了解，當時老師身帶任務被上面「交代」做這調查，然後他們又是選務人員，這樣的狀況讓我反思，雖然在那時20多年前已經擁有民主了，人民擁有了投票的能力，也確實在那次的選舉成功政黨輪替了，在中華民國的政治體制下第一次不是由國民黨執政，但社會大環境的氛圍還是需要時間推進才能慢慢成長。
在成長的過程中我們是見證台灣人的民主思想從萌芽到成熟的一代，但也在很多地方上看到了無奈或者說仍需努力地方，有個做生意的長輩曾感慨的跟我說「我們可能看不到，這個問題（兩岸問題）要留到你們這代了」，很顯然我們現在常常看到，對於我們這一輩的基本訴求，對於生活的安全感，對於在國際上能得到的那份認同，多種層面好像還是很多有影響力的人聽不到、做不到，而這些人還能以自身的政治影響力取得一個擁有左右國家發展的位子，這是我們最擔憂的。
’‘17:06'' 那邊我覺得說得很好，民主化之前，父輩那代爭的是你我誰代表「正統中國」？而現在我們只想訴求你是「中國」，我是「台灣」，我們彼此平等，當然，會有人拿出「根據中華民國憲法.....」來否定台灣作為一個國家名稱的正當性，但規定是死的，而且其時空背景又有如此大的差異，中華民國憲法既然賦予人民自由，那麼人民依法應該擁有重新解釋「中華民國」的概念，中華民國建國至今113年，實質管轄領土在台灣的時間長達75年，並在近30年左右民主化，「台灣」來代表「中華民國」已是既定事實，儘管在正式官方文件上我們的國名仍叫中華民國，但在國際上外國人是以Taiwan來認識我們的，這是個能夠讓我們準確與「中華人民共和國」做出區別的名稱。
「問題出在中國」，但我們仍有很多可以努力的地方。中國能在國際上給予很多壓力，展示權力脅迫很多人配合，而最容易被分化的就是台灣。從上次東奧到這次巴黎進場，都有主持人在進場時稱我們為台灣，規定是死的，規定不能掛國旗、不能用國名，但沒規定嘴巴上不能怎麼說吧？這次全場外國人一起在觀眾席呼喊Taiwan實在令人感動，如何做到讓所有外國人都能進一步認識我們，這是可以從日常非常多細節慢慢累積的，當然最主要是不能再有「漢賊不兩立」這樣意氣用事的態度，而是該放大格局讓人看見，有一天中國影響力衰退了，強硬無理的政策終將取消。

中國人民作為國家的主人已經認定蔣介石是反動派，中華民國政權是叛亂政權，必須被徹底消滅。

In 1979, the Nagoya Resolution required Chinese Taipei to abandon the use of the national flag, national anthem and national emblem representing the Republic of China.
Interestingly, Chinese Taipei sued the International Olympic Committee for violating the Olympic Charter and ultimately won the case.😂
In 1980, the International Olympic Committee was forced to amend some provisions of the Olympic Charter, and a year later reached the Lausanne Agreement with Chinese Taipei.

多數台灣人對於自己的國家是什麼，自己是誰，都有錯誤的認知。首先，台灣是不是一個國家？當然不是，從來不是，未來也不可能是。中華民國是不是一個國家？當然是，從1912年成立至今一直都是一個國家。中華民國的領土包含什麼？根據中華民國憲法，包含大陸地區，台灣地區（台澎金馬），後者是實質控制的領土。但即便前者不實質控制，並不代表中華民國有曾放棄過大陸領土。中華民國是否代表中國？從中華民國憲法的角度來說，中華民國繼承了滿清的領土，也在1945年代表中國接受了台灣，因此中華民國當然是中國，台灣也當然是中國領土。如果台灣不是中國領土，為何開羅宣言和波茨坦公告會要求日本將台灣“歸還”（注意是歸還而不是轉交）給中國，而且是給中華民國？1949年中華人民共和國成立後以及1971年中華人民共和國進入聯合國後，中華民國的國際承認當然受到了影響，但這並不代表中華民國可以或是應該改變自身的立場。從“一個國家”變成“不是一個國家”，從“代表中國的國家”到“代表台灣的國家“。所以1945年後的台灣人是什麼？是中華民國國民，中國人，中華民國領土台灣省/島/地區上面的人。1895-1945年期間的台灣人是什麼？是日本人。如果台灣人對於”中華台北“這個名字有不滿，可以嘗試用”中華民國“來爭取，但絕對不可能用”台灣“這個名字。因為中華民國是國家，而台灣不是，這就是多數台灣人不願意去面對的真相。

首先内战并没有结束....不管PROC还是ROC都只是中国政府的国号，两岸的宪法都是一中
双方并没有真正的合约，第二次国共内战目前还在进行，只是prc和roc在谈判
請把兩岸限縮於中國大陸與金馬，從二戰結束開始到今，台澎就是屬於盟軍的軍事托管區，中日和約只賦予了中華民國對台澎兩島的治權，以及台澎居民暫時的中華民國國民身份，並不包含主權轉移，當年蔣介石政府要逃來台灣的時候就曾經被美國拒絕過，但委員長不管，好真的來了，美國要求放棄金馬用台澎用台灣開一個新局，委員長也不要，造就了如此尷尬的局面，也為金馬居民帶來無盡的戰火，以及台澎人民揮之不去的軍事威脅。
