The cars & tracks being manufactured here are not Scalextric, they are Carrera. Unlike Scalextric track, Carrera track is 1/24 scale, and the power rails are isolated from one another by plastic strips that run between the rails and the slot that the guide blade runs in. This feature removes the possibility of the tracks being shorted together if a screw or some other metal object falls into the slot.
Can I just say as a genuine badge-wearing paid up 1979 member of the 'Scalextric Formula one drivers club', those are not 'imitation' tyres. They are real tyres, miniature yes, but quite real. I have burned some of those out... oh I could tell you some tales, I have raced Fittipaldi and Hunt, and a Gerbil!!
I bet if that camera wasn't recording them they would be working at a high rate of speed nonstop! The moment that camera crew left the room they were probably like GET BACK TO WORK NOWWWW! I bet they make $3.00 a day.
+gnamp I think I have this figured out. Scalextric is the name of a company but, it seems that it's also used as the generic name for slot cars over there. Xerox was like that for photo copiers over here.
wallbreaker2 Yeah, I think so. I didn't even know about Carrera... Such a blatant rip off. Either way- the commentator should stop calling it Sca-lec-trix.
The plastic IS colored! Resins (plastic granules) aren't quite as "uniform" in color as are most paints. It's a pretty safe bet that Ferrari has "licensed" the factory to produce "Ferrari Red" which is why the cars must be painted. And each car must match in color before and after each car made. Lead-Based fuel was banned in Hong Kong in 1999. Plastic and paint are both petrol or fuel-based products.
Then put up your own company and offer a higher pay. It's as simple as that. Don't be a hypocrite. The whiners are usually those who can't do a damn thing.
Do you know how JD Rockefeller made the price of oil cheaper? Know not only the history of American enterprise but the history of Standard Oil as well.
yea well these slave like conditions is whats making you able to afford the shit that you buy, be grateful that you're living in a comfortable home working at a bullshit relaxing 9-5 job which requires no skills at all
Cant blame me for being born into it, our lifestyle depends on it. This regime was implemented long before me and you were even thought of when our parents had too much to drink and got frisky in their cheap imported beds manufactured from a sweat shop etc. You cant turn the monopoly onto me, the only people who would satisfy a position like that are bums on the street and no one listens to them, ironically its the greedy that has the spotlight. Cant have your cake and eat it too.
So presumably, if these were still being made in Ramsgate, they would cost £50 per car instead of £30? Oh no, wait, the prices would probably be the same, but the company directors would not be able to drive around in Bentleys and Ferraris is all.
Mistakes in this video - 1. It's pronounced Scal-EX-tric, not Scal-EC-trix; 2. These cars are Carrera, not Scalextric; 3. The cars are powered by a motor, not a generator. There are probably others. Whoever made the doco should have researched it a bit better. Apart from that, it's interesting to watch the process.
TBH I worked in far worse conditions in the US. These places at least look clean. I worked in a plastics factory in college, and the conditions were afwul. Actually there were alot of molding and painting simliarites between the two factories, except the one in China looked like a clean operating table compared to the US factory. For reference I worked there about 13 years ago, so it wasn't that long ago.
Rev. Yes, the video showcases the CARRERA brand, but around the world, the model car racing "activity" is often referred to as SCALEXTRIC. It has been that way for at least 50 years.
Personally I like Carrera track because it can run both 1:24 and 1:32.The older scalextric track had a tendency to bend which is why I switched. I do however like Scalectrix cars much better.
I remember playing this game with my older brother! The red car was always faster than the black one, so I ended up switching the underneath motors. He was so surprised when I ended up choosing the black car...and winning >:)
I’m running Artin 1/43 scale because it’s compatible with my 1/48 Lionel trains. But I love all the 1/32 and 1/24 scale slot car sets as well. Judging by the huge amount of slot cars on RUclips it seems very popular.
Just like every plastic kit is ‘Airfix’,all sticky tape is ‘Sellotape’.A Goblin vacuum cleaner salesman saying;”This is the best Hoover money can buy!” You think model racing and you think Scalextric.
Nobody is saying that at all .......... A plastic kit is a model kit, sticky tape is sticky tape, and a "goblin" is just a vacuum cleaner. When I think model racing, I think slot car.
' details on the model cars....... ' erm not really. Used the same Benetton shell 93/ 94 / 95 / 97 + 99................. and don't get me started on the 95 Ferrari ripped off from the 91. Fucking horrific. That's when Ninco absolutely pulled your pants down and you were lazy.
Maybe, but unlike western workers, they (often underage kids) have to do the job often in poorly ventilated buildings in 50C+ heat, without breaks, for very long hours to make a wage we would laugh at. The term "sweat shop" came about for a reason. And Asian manufacture is cheap for a reason! Worker health and welfare is last on the list of priorities.
Alright kid - spread that shipping cost over 100,000 units. Also, take into fact the other cargo that will be on that ship - not necessarily little electric cars. How much do you think the cost of shipping will be per unit? sellborn's point is correct.
Yes. The Slots are lined with plastics...Scalectrix are not... I like the soft material the Scalectrix tracks are made off but the slot is bad...Carrera is 1:24 and deeper. A stock Carrera car wont run on Scalectrix.
Argh, he keeps saying "Scale-Et-Tricks" when the word is Scalextric... "Scale-Ex-Trick". If you are a paid professional you should be able to pronounce the name of a brand properly.
@azndoubleb Erm.....sorry dude he did. Just before HK was mentioned. Besides the Kowloon workers are paid marginally better than the mainland workers which is nice! :0)
Slave labor at its best people. I love how they show the better side of what these places are really like. Long hours, bad pay. Forced rent and food. Whatever is left over is sent back to their parents as payment for raising them. Sad eixsistance
this culture is in decline. we make all the effort to make cute toy replicas but we are not able to prevent kids from dying of hunger for decades. fuck
Wow! I use to race 1/24 scale slot cars as a kid.I didn't even think this kinda stuff was even still around.. Lots of good memories. Thank You to the uploader!
Slot Racer. Is the generic name. Carrera is the name of the chinese company that makes Slot racers for scalextric and all the other names that are stuck on this same product.

Why would we want lots of cheap carrying aircraft??? I would really like to know. Having fun is many peoples main goals in life. Many people have fun with this product. If it creates jobs in order to help other families support there families and have fun too, Job well done. Seeing this video makes me appreciate the product more. If anything it's cheap products that should be stopped.
If you're commercially successful in the year after your filing, you'll want to extend the filing to most other countries, which is likely to cost another $75,000 or so because if you don't do this a businessman from another country could take your idea and use it. Now that is just part of the many things they most do. You must have money to make money. So I'm sure the money they made were they're investments. They'd have to be VERY successful to make a profit.

@shashelasse why do you think they are under paid? Shenzhen minimum wage is USD238 per month. They pay USD5.70 for a dozen 600ml bottles of beer, they pay USD70 a month for a rent on a two bedroom apartment, a can of Coke costs them USD0.30. They spend a lot less than you do and it costs them a lot less to buy the same things you do.
Non-educated Brits don't know Scalextric is a trademark; they actually believe it is the name for slotcar racing... do not believe all you see on TV! The same problem for sportseats in real cars... many believe any sporty seat is a Recaro, even if it says Sparco or König all over it.

Re title it carrera. Heres the difference between Scalextric and Carrera. Carrera has better tracks, better cars, and the cars are better. Scalextric cars don"t have interiors and are less detailed.

let's see what we have in the comment section. A bunch of economic experts who know about everyone's pay rate all over the world. well, at least they have a job...
Pay rates world wide aren't the domain of "economic experts" it's very simple to find out pay rates... and conditions of workers world wide... don't be a fool and hide behind double talk... religions are good at that. Pay rates are common knowledge and if you look at the basic monetary exchanges happening in shops, you can work out very quickly whether that pay rate is appropriate for that person and their society... basic pay rates the world over are generally too low.....
Why do so many people -- including the presenter -- pronounce Scalextric as "Scalectrix"? THE X IS IN THE MIDDLE, NOT AT THE END. It's like when people say "nucular" -- NO, JUST PRONOUNCE IT AS IT'S WRITTEN.
yeah well i just wonder how they live with their payoff , if they can also afford a smart phone , carrera racetracks and all the other not life depnding funny things from the market place ^^
If buyer pays for it then in that case manufacturer can consider it free shipping. Have you even bought anything off ebay or such? You would know how shipping goes of you've bought anything off the net.
what about the shipping and handling?! you can't ship that stuff all over the world for free or anything. smh.. i'm 16 and i can see that part. so no not "CEO:...... THE REST!" ignorant people -____-
4 the real Ferrari isn't powered by a Ferrari engine on a side note you do know that technically there is no difference between an electric motor and a generator, right?
I'm old enough to remember when Scalextrics was made in Britain.
Those surgical mask don't do shit against paint fumes...
Lmao they called it Scalextric when it was Carrera!🤣😂
It looks like all of it was Carrera, cars and track.
Can I just say as a genuine badge-wearing paid up 1979 member of the 'Scalextric Formula one drivers club', those are not 'imitation' tyres. They are real tyres, miniature yes, but quite real. The title says Scalextric the commentator kept saying Scalextric but, everything in the video is Carrera.
+wallbreaker2 actually the commentator kept calling it Scalectrix- which is what I called it when I was a little kid- but I take your point.
+gnamp are you in the UK?
wallbreaker2 yes
+gnamp I think I have this figured out. Scalextric is the name of a company but, it seems that it's also used as the generic name for slot cars over there. Xerox was like that for photo copiers over here.
wallbreaker2 Yeah, I think so. I didn't even know about Carrera... Such a blatant rip off. Either way- the commentator should stop calling it Sca-lec-trix.
Sorry, I'm so late!
It's not an engine, it's an electric motor.
Lol
I love how they make it sound like a good thing that they're made in China.
This is not scalextric, it is Carrera. The track designs are Carrera slot cars and the models in their displays show the red Carrera Logo.
So sad that these factory workers get paid below minimum wage while the toys cost high and their CEO's sit on money
"Cost effective production"
hahahahah, is that what slavery is called these days?
Are they being forced to work? Unless you call "business" slavery. I urge you to put up a business of your own if you can.

Cant have your cake and eat it too.
haha I notice it too :) It is Carrera.
Lot of difference between a Scalextric car and a Carrera car.
"A technique similar to silkscreening is used"...... um, that IS silkscreen printing
Yeah true, except the screen will not be silk
it's called Tampo and involves a screen, not silk...
Wow. All of the expert comments about Chinese factories by people who have never been to China.
Nothing but good quality stuff comes outa China these days. They are about the quality as much as the quantity. Good luck to those China folk
And for every car completed each workers receives a single grain of rice
It's not Scalextric.. it's Carrera..
Hah! You're right!!!
dnerix yo Sant race car nascar formula 1 Racing truco para
Yes they can, my 1/24 scale Semi truck can run 63 mph. That's 1,571 mph in 1/24 scale (I think,,, just look up "German wing nats" you'll see)
Those workers got paid double for the day if they were in the video. An extra quarter in their pocket!
That bankrupted the company.
Scalextric??
Carrera you mean!!
How It's made: mistakes
Sellprice: 30 dollar per package
Material costs: 2 dollar
Worker costs: ½ penny
Others: 3 dollars
CEO: ..... THE REST !
why is my brain saying sweatshop ? .,.
i feel bad after watching this
i hope they're well paid
some of them are really young
doing just that 1 task all day long,,pheeew
Nah, probably like 1 dollar a day.
It looks like a clean and safe environment with some pretty skilled people working there. I'd like to work there.
More like a repetitive boring job for a bowl of rice
"cost effective labor" hahahahahahah
+Henry Shefflin's Stunt Double why are you laughing? douche
Stoneyburke
exactly, sadly this happens on different parts of the world :(
+starfuckerification because it's funny
Thats actually as good as working conditions get there. Theres so much worse
And its very easily possible to create improvement.
Scalextric factory making Carrera cars and track sets? Good video no matter which product it is associated.
So presumably, if these were still being made in Ramsgate, they would cost £50 per car instead of £30? Oh no, wait, the prices would probably be the same, but the company directors would not be able to drive around in Bentleys and Ferraris is all.

You do know those cars are Carreras cars not scalextricb
Lot of comments about slave labor...how are you any different. Most of these hard working people build amazing things. Can you say the same ?
Yes
No, we design them and those bastards steal our ideas.
slave labour is about the money.... not the work
TBH I worked in far worse conditions in the US. These places at least look clean. I worked in a plastics factory in college, and the conditions were afwul. that was carrera evolution

Shame its still not made in England . . . .
Another loss for us . .
love how its in a carrera factory
I remember playing this game with my older brother! The red car was always faster than the black one, so I ended up switching the underneath motors. He was so surprised when I ended up choosing the black car...and winning >:)
"(O_o) Scalextric or Carrera Hmmmmmm LOL"
I’m running Artin 1/43 scale because it’s compatible with my 1/48 Lionel trains. But I love all the 1/32 and 1/24 scale slot car sets as well. Judging by the huge amount of slot cars on RUclips it seems very popular.
Its not scalextric. It is carrera evolution, digital 132 or 124
I've seen other videos where 3D printers were used to print the entire body of toy cars. Perhaps they can be a good supplement in manufacturing.
Where does the company transform it's famous designs? well it's a Chinese labour camp of course
Slave labor or not i wouldn't mind working their.
Support your Commies.
Working "there" and furthermore, you or I would probably last no more than a day, if we're lucky
4:30 AM... please youtube enough!
Just ask Google how to go to sleep
Just like every plastic kit is ‘Airfix’,all sticky tape is ‘Sellotape’.A Goblin vacuum cleaner salesman saying;”This is the best Hoover money can buy!” You think model racing and you think Scalextric.
Nobody is saying that at all .......... A plastic kit is a model kit, sticky tape is sticky tape, and a "goblin" is just a vacuum cleaner. When I think model racing, I think slot car.
HOLY SHIT THEY USED A REAL LORRY!?!?!?!?
....feeds a small generator that spins the wheels. Actually it's called an electric motor, not a generator. Even my grandmother knew that.
Now I want one :D
Hong Kong with a blue sky... Today u can't find it there!..
They're called "slot cars" in the US.
Yup, that is what we called them when I was a kid.
i'm 39 and its still my toy :)
Aelia Yousaf You can never get too old for slot cars
"It wont have the raw power of a real ferrari motor.." really mr narrator, really :o
The power to weight ratio and scale speeds of the slot cars are actually 2 to 3 times greater than that of a Ferrari
Good video think these are Carrera slot cars. Must be hard going for the woman painting those helmets all day.
Thanks China! Glad someone took the pollution.
Maybe, but unlike western workers, they (often underage kids) have to do the job often in poorly ventilated buildings in 50C+ heat, without breaks, for very long hours to make a wage we would laugh at.

yey Slave labor./s
Scalextrc..??? these are Carrera set...at least the boxing....probably the same factory anyway, 1 day this brand, the next day another one and so on
Ummm, I'm sure it's been said already, but those Cars/Sets are Carrera, not Scalextric.
I'm sure the processes are the same though.
@azndoubleb Erm.....sorry dude he did. Just before HK was mentioned. Besides the Kowloon workers are paid marginally better than the mainland workers which is nice! :0)

You can't appreciate and cherish possessions until you break some and what's so bad about increased demands in products, resulting in more jobs?.
Slot Racer. Is the generic name. Carrera is the name of the chinese company that makes Slot racers for scalextric and all the other names that are stuck on this same product.
Yeah, actually, the narrator gives a lot of too generic and wrong information. Interesting video, though.
So. Tomorrow there is going to be gentlemen from TV. So EVERYONE will come including you Tetsuo. EVERYONE will wear the protective suits and hats I just borrowed from mr. Quan factory where they make them, DO NOT DAMAGE THEM PLEASE or else I cut it off your pay! You will be on TV so EVERYONE SMILE who no smile no job OK? Make EXTRA SURE you dont screw up anything. If you're commercially successful in the year after your filing, you'll want to extend the filing to most other countries, which is likely to cost another $75,000 or so because if you don't do this a businessman from another country could take your idea and use it. Half a yen an hour! Um it would be a Yuan if it is China or a Dollar if it is Hong Kong - yen is Japan. If it is in Shenzhen then they will paid at least the minimum wage that is set for Shenzhen. Sure the article has a lot of inaccuracies but it does show how the cars and tracks are made. The lorry is also a mainland China one as it is left hand drive. if it was a Hong Kong one it would be right hand drive.
Is this a joke? This is not Scalextric but Carrera! The cars, the track parts, the packaging and even the Designer shown.
You haven't even rebuttal any single arguments, an excellent way to show how much you actually know about eocnomics.
By the way this conversation is over since all you can do is reply with insults, belittlement, and ignorance.
I don't want to waste typing more words to a blinded fool.
Re title it carrera. Heres the difference between Scalextric and Carrera. Carrera has better tracks, better cars, and the cars are better. Scalextric cars don"t have interiors and are less detailed.

They probaly said that because its mostly known as Scalextric like how vacume cleaners are known as hoovers
let's see what we have in the comment section. A bunch of economic experts who know about everyone's pay rate all over the world. well, at least they have a job...
Pay rates world wide aren't the domain of "economic experts" it's very simple to find out pay rates... and conditions of workers world wide... don't be a fool and hide behind double talk... religions are good at that. one way to educate the audience on labor issues... Quite subtle Nat. Geo lol
its really awesome wanna see more
Great work by a good nation. I feel burning smell here..... :p
yeah well i just wonder how they live with their payoff , if they can also afford a smart phone , carrera racetracks and all the other not life depnding funny things from the market place ^^
If buyer pays for it then in that case manufacturer can consider it free shipping.

i don't get it, people who say: "that's cheap chinese stuff" why the fuck are you even buying it???
Just annoys me the quality control is so bad. When scalextric were UK made the quality was so much better decals were perfect and so on.
4 the real Ferrari isn't powered by a Ferrari engine on a side note you do know that technically there is no difference between an electric motor and a generator, right?
this is false they use computers to make the tracks and the cars are hand made
Engine and motor are pretty much the same :P But generator?! as you said it was stupid !!
Voice over by the same bloke that does any number of shows out of the UK - the Guy Martin Speed series for instance.
